Arrrrggg! Pirates!

Well Pirates, they were mean, dirty, and fast on the gun, and they had scurvey! Well people always seek to be like pirates, we dress up like them whenever there is an excuse to, and for some reason we think the are interesting fellows, I have to say I am one of those people. Heck everyone likes pirates little kids with their legos, and people who dress like them at Renissance festivals. So ever wanted to be a pirate? Related to a Pirate? Know something interesting about Pirates that everyone else doesn't? I don't really care as long as it fits into the Colonial period. Yes I relize this is a redicious thread, but that makes it more fun or something! ARRRRRGGG!!!

I just always wonder what pirates were really like instead of the swashbuckling Errol Flynn-esque media creation we know and love.

Yeah the true heart of them, heck there where "privateers" which where pirates who stole for there country, but if you stole for yourself it was a crime, ironic, and then they called the Spainards pirates after the Brits got done looting all the Spainish ships with the Sea Dogs.

I like the movie Pirates of the Caribbean. Other than that, I can't comment much on the subject.

I just watched the movie all the way through this past Saturday. It was actually very, very good. I remember seeing a preview for it months before it was released and I thought it was going to be a bag of crap. I put off seeing it because I thought it was going to be lame, even though all of my friends said it was good and everyone said to see it.

It's a pretty awesome movie though.

Orlando Bloom ruins it though. Dirty, dirty Orlando Bloom, with his overly pompous acting abilities. Since when is nostril-flaring considered acting?

Now back on topic... *Straightens papers*

My sister really enjoys pirates, who is older than me. I never seen the appeal. Sure, who doesn't want to be a feline at sea commiting many crimes? But just random people with a boat can do that...

My friends and I celebrate talk like a Pirate day (19th September). We also occasionally honour the memory of pirates by going to the boating lake in the city park. Arrrr!

Wow I didn't know that holiday was National. I also celebrated that holiday. I often find myself using pirate terms alot like "run out the guns" and such, don't ask why, I just do. Heck I spent $125 on a fancy pirate costume of eBay (yet it was worth it at the Reniassance Festival, Colonial Williamsburg, SCA, and Georgetown). Ah well but those tales are for a later time.

I always forget about Talk Like a Pirate Day (which is international by the way), but I'm going to try really hard to remember this year though.

I hope this isn't goin to start off a ninjas vs pirates thread. I';ve been through way too many of those. Although they are fun, I've seen to many.

Anyway, Pirate Facts:

1. Santa's "Ho, Ho, Ho" is an adaptation of the pirate phrase "Yo, ho, ho and a bottle of rum."
2. The gruff over pronunciation of the letter "Arrgh" is a result of overcompensation for a childhood speach impediment common to the first pirates.

The internet is unusually viod of pirate facts. Hmmmmmm.....

Exactly, it doesn't make sense, that is what made me clueless.
Anyway there are a number of history facts about pirates that you just seem to pick up, like did you know that pirates invented the game Poison? I could tell you all about pirates, but again are the benefits of many history books and the history channel. And besides ninjas didn't have cannons

What the hell is up with ninjas? They're just asian guys in frickin' pyjamas, for christs sake... They are as stupid as Pirates, that's for sure. Ninjas do fancy spinny moves and have cool weaponary- whoopy. How absoloutely wonderful.

Brilliant idea, Godless! It is strange how many people are talkin about ninjas in a pirate thread. In this thread go ahead and tell us about any of your desendance you know of that lived anytime in the colonial period and would be prone to that sort of Age of Sails life time. In other words, give up what you know about the Colonial/Revolutionary peroid about whatever. So no one can say anything is better than a place in time, because thats just...stupid. They never made a holiday for ninjas yet, so...um yeah. But Ninja Pirates, an amazing idea. Plus there were pirates who came from Japan, whos names escapes me at the moment.

On the radio this morning some random bloke called in and requested that the DJs announce the weather in pirate voices. I can't say that I know why; I have a feeling he didn't know himself. But needless to say Jay and the Doctor rose to the challenge beautifully.

There were a very good and informative special about pirates on the second "Pirates of the Carribean" DVD. Many infos about the different types of pirates, their weapons (hand-grenades!) and much other stuff.
If someone needs info about something special tell me, maybe its on the dvd and I could drop some lines in here.

Yes, ask questions please if you have any, I like this sort of history. If you want to know the difference between a frigate and a galley, the differance between at cutlass and a rapier, cannon and their projectile fires, etc, just ask. There is alot of Pirate history in South Carolina (where I go about every month) espically on Black Beard and in Virgina is Colonial Williamsburg, and you get the idea. So questions, ask them
*Rereads*
Do I always jibber like that?!

Pirates are the bomb no matter what any body says, plus I have seen numerous pirate sites in South Carolina with Shadowman. And not to mention all those Colonial sites here in New England

Hey, as i understand it pirates are alive and well in many parts of the world,
although they are mostly common thieves. No patches, parrots, or peg legs, they don`t look like Johnny Depp or act like Keith Richards (who Depp modeled Capt. Sparrow after)

Only very few pirates had large battleships and this also only when they had other ships, too
The weight of a single cannon on a large (pirate) battleship depended on the type of the cannon and it's calibre. The weight of a cannon varied in the 17th century from 635kg / 1398,68lbs with a 77cm / 30,31inch calibre to 2041kg / 4495,59lbs with a 177cm / 69,69inch calibre.
Recently there was salvaged a cannon from the "HMS Bounty", this cannon has a weight of 850kg / 1872,25lbs

Hope I could help you
