My friend just sent me this link a few minutes ago.

I couldn't believe a bill like this would pass, but then I remembered that if the Patriot Act can pass, anything can. I was just arguing the other day with my teacher about that, saying it was an attack on our liberties and stuff. She stated that since she had nothing to hide, she didn't care if she was investigated or went on "a list" for checking out Mein Kampf by Hitler. Man, for that argument, I wish I had the Ben Franklin quote from this article: "People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both."

Anyway, the article is somewhat biased, but that doesn't mean it's wrong.

"Americans are going to regret re-electing Bush" would be a pretty safe bet. Maybe Bush is being an idiot cause he has some money on that one.

Doubtfully. If the half of America that voted for Bush still liked him after his first term, there's no hope for them at all.

I tried looking this information up as a recent headline on other news sites, and came up blank. If someone else finds a few spare minutes, perhaps could you attempt to find a more reliable source for such a major event? I'm a bit skeptical as to the linked articles legitimacy. Crazy, uber right or left wing sites aren't always the most credible sources.

Particularly the line about nobody in the Senate/House not even reading the bill. That just sounds too much like political slander against the US. Stating that no one took the time is bold indeed.

Very true. The friend that gave me the link is one of the most intelligent people I know, so I figured he had a good reason to believe the article. Trying to find some other sources would still probably a good idea though, because like you said, these kinds of sites aren't always credible. If anyone finds anything else on it, pass it this way.

I'm thinking this either isn't real, or there is an extremely slanted presentation of facts. Such a severe political move would surely rally more news articles, and the wrath of protestors. Which I've heard nothing of.

It... um... sucks?

I mean, it really does suck. Of course, you have to take into account that the site that is talking about these badges seems to lean pretty far to the left, but the thought of... ID badges doesn't settle with me very well.

And you know how much I hate to have my picture taken.

Actually, Congress not reading the bills it passes is quite true. I refer you to one Michael Moore. In his movie Fahrenheit 9/11, he asks a member of the House of Reps, I believe, how they could have allowed something like the Patriot Act to pass. The man told him, quite honestly, that Congress reads very little of the bills they pass. It would take so long to read through every bill, it's just not feasible with the kind of government we have.

I guess titles are quite important in those bills. If only they had named it the "Take Away Civil Liberties and Induce Mass Paranoia Act". Sigh. If only, if only.

But I still kinda doubt the article, mainly because it displays obviously bias against conservatives in the opening thingymabob, y'know, the references to Nazism. Quite true, really, but a smart liberal doesn't come right out and say it. If you say it, it gets disregarded as "liberal negativity" or something of that sort. I dunno, I'm not frickin' Spiro T. Agnew, you come up with the term.

The party probably has someone behind the scenes who reads all the fine print and tells the politicians how to vote. Or possibly they use their own staffers.

Yeah, but even then, who would be willing to read 3,000 or so pages of fine print? That is, if the article is right. I meant to present the article in more of a "What if this is true" kind of way, but meh.

If it is true, I'm greatly angered because creating bills and acts like these is giving the terrorists or whoever exactly what they want. They want us to live in fear, and they despise what liberties we are capable of having (but are so quickly willing to give up, apparently). The terrorists accomplished the whole fear thing, and the next step is being done for them by Congress.

But really, from what I can tell, the practical applications have little to do with terrorism. More with technological identity theft, and simplication of personal records. Last time I checked, Osamo isn't out there trying to pass himself off as a middle age white male soley for the purpose of a plasma TV. IMHO, the idealogy behind such an act isn't as nazi-esque as the article makes it out to be. It could be quite handy, in actuality.

Yeah, but so are humans made in tubes and barcodes on foreheads. I think there's sort of a point of diminishing returns, where the smoothness of society just isn't worth giving up the liberties that it would be necessary to give up. I can't say where on the spectrum this whole deal lies, but I vehemently oppose anything that gives more power to the federal government and takes away from the states.
