SLAM. SLAM. SLAM
Closer and closer…
SLAM. SLAM. SLAM
Louder and louder…
SLAM. SLAM. SLAM
Just a bit…more…
Eba urged himself on, for his legs to move faster, for the doors to malfunction, to escape. Now every new door was only feet away, and they were catching up. Bea was running out of breath, and slowing, clutching his side. The vibrations of the doors were causing him to stumble violently, slowing him down even more, and closing the gap between him and their crushing metal source. Eba had to think fast, there was no way he, let alone Bea, would reach the end of the tunnel in time. Bea put on a small burst of speed, putting himself only slightly in front of Eba. SLAM. The door scuffed the back of Eba’s outstretched heel. Instinct took over, and Eba leapt forwards. As he did so, his legs slid into themselves, and in their place shot out gliding wings. As he fell, at a slowed rate, he grabbed Bea around the waist and just before he hit the ground the rotating blades burst out and began spinning fast. Eba gracefully inclined upwards, slowly gaining just that extra little foot of distance from the doors needed to survive. He leant forward, and skimmed the ground. Through the tunnel opening! A blinding light! And…an explosion!
Fire engulfed him, sound reverberated around him, his body shook violently, his brain knocked around inside his head, and he went crashing, surrounded by smoke into whatever it was that lay below.
It was like being lightly hit, by hundreds of small thin clubs, all over. Eba tumbled round and round as the smoke cleared, and swivelled just in time to see the huge moss ridden trunk of a gigantic tree, and barrel roll out of its path, into the leaf covered branch of another. Leaves burst out, and slowly floated to the ground, twisting and turning, as they fell deep into the heart of the jungle floor. Eba raised his head groggily, to see he was hanging by one wing from one of the other smaller branches located within this mass of leaves. He had just crashed through the canopy of a lush jungle. Beneath him, on the larger central branch lay 024, still unconscious. Next to him lay a large purple and blue feather, one of which Bea used to adorn himself. Bea, however, was nowhere to be seen. Eba drew his wings back in, and dropped down to land on his feet. He checked around to make sure all his equipment was still there, and it was. He drew his rifle, stepped over 024 and began to walk from the dense cluster of leaves, out onto the larger branch, towards the trunk. A rustling behind him prompted him to turn on the spot, finger on the trigger of his rifle. Bea stood, holding a knife, over 024. “Do NOT kill him!” hissed Eba raising his rifle more. Bea bent down, and rose clutching his feather “Dropped it in the crash” he muttered. Eba lowered his rifle, puzzled. “I was expecting resistance…” Bea reattached his feather “They say that intelligent creatures will show their true natures in a crisis situation. You have proven yourself worthy, green Slig.” He held out his hand, and Eba took, and shook it. “Although risky, I think your opinion of this…creature...should not be ignored” He flipped his knife around in his fingers and cut some vines from above his head. “Cant be too careful…” he added as he tied 024’s arms and legs together. “His systems should be down for a while. If he’s not with us by the time they come back online…we may have to dispose of him. For our own safety” Eba hung his head. “Come” said Bea gesturing towards the branch cluster “This should provide adequate cover, for now…” Eba slung away his rifle, stepped back over 024, and began to do as Bea did, and make himself a small living space from branches and leaves. “Why did it explode?” pondered Eba out loud. “The tunnels rims were rigged with explosives at the last door. I suppose if anyone else got that far, the explosion of the last door would have killed them as they jumped. We, on the other hand, were flying. That gave us a speed advantage.” Eba smirked, wondering how Bea could’ve noticed explosive charges in that moment of crisis. They had just survived an armed assault, a chase by crushing metal doors, an explosion, and a fall through a jungle canopy, into a branch. Eba clambered up into his ‘nest’ and Bea climbed into his own. Bea leant out and tightened 024’s binds a bit more. He looked up at Eba “Can’t be too careful” he said, and then gave a small, nervous smile. He leant back into his nest, and put his knife away. “In the morning, do not be worried if I am not here when you awake. I shall scout the immediate area, see where we are, how we could survive. That is what I am good at, I am a Native after all.” Eba glanced at 024 “What if he wakes up first?” Bea shrugged “Maybe then he will have time to see we are not out to get him…but you must start your de programming as soon as possible. We do not want him to cut his way out, thinking we are his enemies.” Bea rolled over, as Eba turned to sleeper mode. Both remained silent, and both dropped into a deep sleep very quickly, after the traumatizing recent events. Eba dreamt about Dr Mort being tortured in a cell somewhere, and about the ATF hunting them down, and about fire, lots of fire…
