You little whippersnappers...

Wired magazine has a list of 100 Things Your Kids May Never Know.

So, what percentage of these have you done/heard of?

I'm familiar with 90% of that list. Most of the ones I haven't done are stuff in the Computing and Interneting sections that are 70's and 80's-focused. Also some of the Britishisms like the Marathon Bar or that Kit Kat thing.

Marathon bar was the only thing.

Yeah I've loaded programs onto computers using audio cassettes.

You've done Archie and Gopher searches?

I've telnetted into FTP servers before and used an Archie account, yes.

Gopher is just that, but simplified through a streamlined client.

About 60% for me. I still do a lot of those things.

I know 80-90% of those things.

Surprisingly I've done the vast majority on that list.

Hm, near 50% I think.

Can you imagine in 60 years (for those of us still around by then) we can tell our kids that "in our day, cars still used gas!"

I'm familiar with 94/95% (I lost count at around 90 because I started thinking about things).

They should never have renamed the Marathon bar. "Marathon" sounded much better than "Snicker".

No, they'll still be using it.

I recognized about 95 percent, and have done about 85 percent. When I was a kid I made up a fake business for myself (Bell Tech and Electronics) so that I could receive OMNI magazine for free.

With the way things are going (running out of oil and electric cars making an entrance) I very much doubt we'll still be driving on fossil fuels in 60 years. But time will tell.

Where's the profit in electric? Why does Chevron own all the patents on reliable and lucrative electric car batteries?

And why does an American carbureted 1984 Honda Civic get 52mpg while a modern Honda hybrid only 36mpg?

Time will tell. Wait no it won't.

As you can see, waiting for "them" to take care of us has dug the hole even deeper. It's time to start thinking differently and originally.

Get with the times.
If something works, use it. Don't buy a new one.

Thinking originally means starting from the basics. You're probably joking, but if that's really your attitude then it's a very immature one.

Case in point: as an electronic technician and repairman, I have a very good understanding of how things work and how things are made. Now... knowing what I know I wonder, "How can anyone be buying all of this CRAP. Are they CRAZY?" It's a sobering realization how much of this stuff is being designed to only operate for a period which equates to not much longer than its warrantee. We're being sold a bill of goods guys. Do you really not care, only because it's new?

We're swept up in glitz and appearance; we're not asked to investigate or even understand the quality that lies beneath.

That's my take; go ahead and do as your told. We'll see what happens since we're not ready to do anything about it today.

You two should really invest in USB drives for exchanging data, they're faster, more aesthetically pleasing and hold far more data.

I remember/ know/ have heard of 97% of that - all I didn't know was "Concatenating and UUDecoding binaries from Usenet.", "Starbuck being a man." and "Taking turns picking a radio station, or selecting a tape, for everyone to listen to during a long drive."

Didn't know the latter EVER existed.
