You little whippersnappers...

Wired magazine has a list of 100 Things Your Kids May Never Know.

So, what percentage of these have you done/heard of?

I'm familiar with 90% of that list. Most of the ones I haven't done are stuff in the Computing and Interneting sections that are 70's and 80's-focused. Also some of the Britishisms like the Marathon Bar or that Kit Kat thing.

Pilot 07-23-2009 07:54 PM

Marathon bar was the only thing.

Yeah I've loaded programs onto computers using audio cassettes.

Nate 07-23-2009 08:15 PM

You've done Archie and Gopher searches?

Pilot 07-23-2009 08:37 PM

I've telnetted into FTP servers before and used an Archie account, yes.

Gopher is just that, but simplified through a streamlined client.

About 60% for me. I still do a lot of those things.

I know 80-90% of those things.

Slog Bait 07-23-2009 10:00 PM

Surprisingly I've done the vast majority on that list.

I'm going to die when everything becomes wireless.

mr.odd 07-23-2009 10:05 PM

done %20

moxco 07-23-2009 10:08 PM

I know of about 80% but have only done/used 20 - 40%

Leto 07-24-2009 12:15 AM

I didn't know 3.

Fuck you GeekDads, suck my post pubescent dick.

Havoc 07-24-2009 01:39 AM

Hm, near 50% I think.

Can you imagine in 60 years (for those of us still around by then) we can tell our kids that "in our day, cars still used gas!"

Leto 07-24-2009 01:42 AM

Why in my day, it was still legal to have sexual intercourse.

OddjobAbe 07-24-2009 02:58 AM

I'm familiar with 94/95% (I lost count at around 90 because I started thinking about things).

They should never have renamed the Marathon bar. "Marathon" sounded much better than "Snicker".

Bullet Magnet 07-24-2009 05:06 AM

"Snicker" is what a cockroach sounds like when it laughs.

Anonyman! 07-24-2009 08:06 AM

I didn't count, but around 60% done and 80% known.

Moosh da Outlaw 07-24-2009 09:05 AM

I knew about 60 percent. And I was actually stuck using my cousin's dinosaur-aged walkman up until seventh grade. >>

No, they'll still be using it.

That is, unless you and I take control.

OANST 07-24-2009 09:43 AM

I recognized about 95 percent, and have done about 85 percent. When I was a kid I made up a fake business for myself (Bell Tech and Electronics) so that I could receive OMNI magazine for free.

With the way things are going (running out of oil and electric cars making an entrance) I very much doubt we'll still be driving on fossil fuels in 60 years. But time will tell.

Pilot 07-24-2009 04:26 PM

Where's the profit in electric? Why does Chevron own all the patents on reliable and lucrative electric car batteries?

And why does an American carbureted 1984 Honda Civic get 52mpg while a modern Honda hybrid only 36mpg?

Time will tell. Wait no it won't.

As you can see, waiting for "them" to take care of us has dug the hole even deeper. It's time to start thinking differently and originally.

Get with the times.

Get with the times.

If something works, use it. Don't buy a new one.

Thinking originally means starting from the basics. You're probably joking, but if that's really your attitude then it's a very immature one.

Case in point: as an electronic technician and repairman, I have a very good understanding of how things work and how things are made. Now... knowing what I know I wonder, "How can anyone be buying all of this CRAP. Are they CRAZY?" It's a sobering realization how much of this stuff is being designed to only operate for a period which equates to not much longer than its warrantee. We're being sold a bill of goods guys. Do you really not care, only because it's new?

We're swept up in glitz and appearance; we're not asked to investigate or even understand the quality that lies beneath.

That's my take; go ahead and do as your told. We'll see what happens since we're not ready to do anything about it today.

Wings of Fire 07-24-2009 06:41 PM

I made my own tents, brewed my own ale and crafted my own wooden weapons and leather armour.

I win, technofaggots.

OANST 07-25-2009 06:19 AM

I consistently have sex with a pretty girl. I hate to keep bringing it up and all......but I definitely fucking win.

Wings of Fire 07-25-2009 07:21 AM

That's only pertinent to this topic if she has an eight-track.

OANST 07-25-2009 07:34 AM

I put my floppy in her disc drive.

Wings of Fire 07-25-2009 07:36 AM

How old is her operating system?

OANST 07-25-2009 07:45 AM

Older than my floppy.

used:) 07-25-2009 07:50 AM

No virus protection I imagine.

Wings of Fire 07-25-2009 07:52 AM

You two should really invest in USB drives for exchanging data, they're faster, more aesthetically pleasing and hold far more data.

SpAM_CAN 07-25-2009 01:12 PM

I remember/ know/ have heard of 97% of that - all I didn't know was "Concatenating and UUDecoding binaries from Usenet.", "Starbuck being a man." and "Taking turns picking a radio station, or selecting a tape, for everyone to listen to during a long drive."

Didn't know the latter EVER existed.
