OANST, just basing your opinion on one site and a couple of crappy writers does not justify you to generally call fan fictions awful.
There are plenty of fan fics out there that are outstanding, at least in my opinion.
Once again, you see everything they way you want to see it. You are quite possibly the most close-minded person I have ever known. All you need to do is to actually listen to the other side instead of ignorantly and blatantly setting your thoughts in stone before seeing the whole story.
Of course, you'll most likely pick this post apart and make insults to every single punctuation mark, and avoid the overall meaning entirely.
Then again, I could be wrong, and all fan fictions suck, but so far nothing except fanfiction.net has proved it correct.
I am sick and tired of you thinking this way, and I'm sorry if it seems that I've over-reacted. But it is extremely irritating to see you piss and moan about every little thing.

HUZZAH!
Ok, back on topic.
I agree with Bullet Magnet that it's good practice. All my early writing was fanfiction cus it meant I could actually write something without spending three years thinking up a totally original idea. That's three years I spent practicing writing before I got on to seriously making up my own ideas. Good practice.
And if it's done properly it's a lot of fun to do and a lot of fun to read. A good fanfiction story that doesn't interfere, rewrite or make predictions of the plot of the original
is a good read.
I also agree with MM. 99 out of every 100 stories on ff.net are rubbish, 60 out of 100 are porn, the majority of which is probably the author trying to fulfill his own twisted fantasies and absolutely, undeniably and unredeemably out of character, and 1 in every 10,000 is an outstanding work of (fan)fiction! There are some great stories on that site, you just have to filter through piles and piles of rubbish to find them.
But some of the good ones will, it has to be said, blow your mind from sheer awesomeness.
