Stop posting in W&B. And making pointless threads.

Creepy Doc 12-18-2006 01:21 AM

Yes, that thread has to go in the Off-Topic Discussion and has also to be a topic to discusse then.

Rex Tirano 12-18-2006 06:54 AM

FF.net is full of people with little to no imagination.

Munch's Master 12-18-2006 10:07 AM

Half the fics on that site are unimaginative, half are excuses for people to write their perverted sexual fantasies, and half are just poor reading. The remaining half are OK. Yes I am well aware that is 4 halves, and it will remain 4 halves, NOT 4 quarters.

snuzi 12-18-2006 01:00 PM

I agree. The stories thought up by those people are so of the dumbest, most boring things I've ever read. Even calling them stories is an insult to writers everywhere.

Strike Witch 12-18-2006 02:11 PM

There was a girl at my school who was obsessed with some book she would go to the computer room during lunchtime and copy/paste fanfics about her heroes....she was REALLY sad.

snuzi 12-18-2006 02:14 PM

Man, that is pathetic. Why won't people just create their own original stories instead of ripping off someone else's? I just don't understand it.

looney-bin 12-18-2006 02:18 PM

I presonally don't mind fan fictions based on big, open worlds (Warhammer, Warcraft, and even Oddworld are examples of this), just aslong as they're good and don't **** around with characters and/or the world the fiction is based in. However, the rest of the ff.net database is full of drivel and boringness.

OANST 12-19-2006 03:50 PM

Fan fictions are the lowest form of writing known to man (or woman) I could scribble the word "shitcocker" 1000 times on a piece of bark and it would be far more intelligent, thought provoking, interesting, and relevant than any fan fiction ever written. Death to Brian Herbert. Death to Kevin Anderson.

mitsur 12-19-2006 07:17 PM

OANST, just basing your opinion on one site and a couple of crappy writers does not justify you to generally call fan fictions awful.

There are plenty of fan fics out there that are outstanding, at least in my opinion.

Once again, you see everything they way you want to see it. You are quite possibly the most close-minded person I have ever known. All you need to do is to actually listen to the other side instead of ignorantly and blatantly setting your thoughts in stone before seeing the whole story.

Of course, you'll most likely pick this post apart and make insults to every single punctuation mark, and avoid the overall meaning entirely.

Then again, I could be wrong, and all fan fictions suck, but so far nothing except fanfiction.net has proved it correct.

I am sick and tired of you thinking this way, and I'm sorry if it seems that I've over-reacted. But it is extremely irritating to see you piss and moan about every little thing.

OANST 12-19-2006 07:52 PM

I have never once set eyes upon fanfiction.net. So, no. That isn't what I'm basing my opinion on.It isn't that a fan fiction can't be well written. Of course, it can. But anyone who would spend the time and energy to make shit up in someone else's creation is a poor excuse for a writer. For one thing, it's obsessive to the point of stupidity. If your life is so depressing that you just lay around at night fantasizing about living in some fictional world then you should probably just kill yourself. It's best for everyone. For another thing, any word that is written in this plagiarist's heaven should be immediately thrown out for lack of all "real" imagination and creativity. If you read this and you write fanfics......please stop. Try to be a decent human being and stop stealing from your betters.

snuzi 12-19-2006 08:03 PM

I have to agree with you, OANST. Not with all the aspects of your post, mind you, but some.

I can't possibly fathom why a person obsessed with a book would deliberately rip off their favorite writer's original work. I mean, it's basically destroying the author's original vision of the story, since the person is contaminating it with their own view of how things should transpire. It really gets on my nerves, because if the person truly loves the particular story, they should leave it alone, no matter how entranced they are by it. In my opinion, only the original writer or a particular story has the right to alter or continue it.

Of course, this is just my opinion. The people who do this must have their own reasons for doing it. Reasons that are beyond my control and that I must accept no matter how much this annoys me. After all, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

OANST 12-19-2006 08:06 PM

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. This is true. But my opinions have that extra weight because they are right.

snuzi 12-19-2006 08:09 PM

You may think so now, but eventually you'll find out that you can't always be right.

Strike Witch 12-19-2006 11:44 PM

When that day happens, OANST will shoot whoever says it's wrong. :p

OANST 12-20-2006 03:15 PM

Nah, I've been wrong before. It was October 3rd 1984 and I thought my favorite color was green. I later discovered it was blue.

mitsur 12-20-2006 03:44 PM

You know, you may not listen to other opinions, but I still get a kick out of you.

You're like the hilarious ass everyone loves to love.

And yes, it is meant to be taken as a compliment.

Bullet Magnet 12-23-2006 01:44 PM

I find fan-fiction to be good practice for different styles. Sometimes you want to try out a new way of writing, or just see if you can write a proper story. Using your own characters for that sort of thing is great, but while you are obsessed with a certain universe, and it happens, it's difficult to write an original piece, and even if you do, you'll look back at it later and hate it for stealing stuff from other things, which is ten times worse then openly writing about someone else's world.

Sapphire Diamond 12-28-2006 09:51 AM

sorry.......

HUZZAH!

Ok, back on topic.
I agree with Bullet Magnet that it's good practice. All my early writing was fanfiction cus it meant I could actually write something without spending three years thinking up a totally original idea. That's three years I spent practicing writing before I got on to seriously making up my own ideas. Good practice.
And if it's done properly it's a lot of fun to do and a lot of fun to read. A good fanfiction story that doesn't interfere, rewrite or make predictions of the plot of the original is a good read.

I also agree with MM. 99 out of every 100 stories on ff.net are rubbish, 60 out of 100 are porn, the majority of which is probably the author trying to fulfill his own twisted fantasies and absolutely, undeniably and unredeemably out of character, and 1 in every 10,000 is an outstanding work of (fan)fiction! There are some great stories on that site, you just have to filter through piles and piles of rubbish to find them.
But some of the good ones will, it has to be said, blow your mind from sheer awesomeness.

Sapphire Diamond 12-29-2006 08:28 AM

yeah, you can say that^^it's true so i ignore them

Patrick Vykkers 12-29-2006 03:22 PM

On the topic of fanfiction, I'm currently writing a KOTOR II one on the origins of Darth Nihilus. I'm not planning to submit it to any website currently, but if I do, it would probably be KOTORFanMedia.

Strike Witch 12-29-2006 05:48 PM

Ah, Nihilus. I loved fighting him in KOTOR2.

Great character.

mitsur 12-29-2006 08:19 PM

Oh geez, that guy was almost a laugh to beat.

I just slapped on my best stuff, did the usual buffs, and in about 3 seconds he killed everyone but my own character, who was virtually untouched.

Nihilus died a broken man.

Splat 12-30-2006 06:24 AM

Actually I am at this time writing an Oddworld fanfic to eventually post here.
Actually it's based on some of my RPG characters in W@RF ("What's that, Work at Rupture Farms? Ooh, what an exciting name for a forum RPG, we should all go and join right now!" "Good idea old boy!"*)

You too.

This deserved a double post.
