Chapter 5
Unexpected help
Admeet just sat there, breathless. Zaypher walked over to him and pulled him up. “She’s gone” said Admeet felling upset. “She’s not gone forever Admeet” said Zaypher, “We’ll get her back”. Suddenly, the glass containing the test specimens smashed and they landed on the floor. “Get back” said Zaypher looking at the grounded specimens. Then they started getting up and facing Admeet and Zaypher. One had an extremely long tongue and a deformed body. The other had pouring, hot acid coming out of its wounds and mouth. “Get into the next room” said Admeet looking at the door near them. Zaypher and Admeet ran for it through the doorway and quickly closed it. The first specimen’s tongue shot out and gripped the door, and the second specimen shot boiling acid at the door; it wasn’t going to last long. “We need to find some sort of weapon” said Zaypher trying to reinforce the door. Admeet looked around for a weapon. The only things he found were an axe and a crowbar but that would be enough. Then something else caught Admeet’s eye. He picked it up and read the small writing on the side. “RX57 Pulse Cutter” he read out, “They might have also been researching on weapons. This could be useful”. He also found two ammo clips beside it. “Quickly Admeet, they’re almost through” said Zaypher pushing the door towards the two specimens.
Admeet readied the cutter and aimed it at the door; Zaypher grabbed the crowbar. The door started to wear away from the acid and a hole started to form. Then the door fell apart and the two specimens could be seen. Zaypher prepared to strike the tongue specimen when suddenly; two dagger roaches leapt out of nowhere and started attacking the two specimens. They both fell to the ground while more dagger roaches came around the two corpses. They dug at the mutated flesh while two other roaches eyed Zaypher and Admeet. They looked like they were going to attack when...
“Stop” shouted somebody. The dagger roaches calmed down strangely and scuttled away towards a dark figure. Admeet and Zaypher lowered their weapons. They looked around to see an elderly Slig holding a strange object. “I have been watching all of this” said the elderly Slig, “I haven’t seen a visitor, let alone two, visit this place since it was abandoned”. Admeet and Zaypher looked confused. “Who are you?” asked Admeet. “I am Klazor” he said. “Why don’t the dagger roaches attack you?” asked Admeet again. “They make me their king because of this” said Klazor holding out a squidgy thing in the palm of his hand, “It is a roach queen’s heart. It took me a long time to acquire what looks like a dagger roach turd. The prize was great, but the loss was dreadful”. He showed Admeet and Zaypher his left leg which had been cut off at the knee. “That was a direct bite from the roach queen” said Klazor looking at his leg, “but in the end, I killed it, grabbed its heart and became the Dagger Roach king”. “Why are you holding out here?” asked Zaypher. “It is a safe place, the Dagger Roaches find food for me and I’m relatively safe in their hands. They will defend me to the death” replied Klazor, “I suppose you’ve got other things to do?” “Yes” replied Admeet, “I suppose you saw the ‘transformation’ of my friend did you not?” “Yes I did” replied Klazor, “Every bit of it, like all test subjects, she would be heading towards a sacred place. That’s where all of the other test subjects went when we inflicted them with pulse energy. It’s strange isn’t it, but don’t worry. I have a map to the place where you will find her”.
Klazor lead them to a mossy drawer and opened it. Inside were a PDA and a couple of clipboards. He grabbed the PDA and turned it on. However, nothing happened. “Hmm, seems that the PDA has no juice” said Zaypher looking at its onboard power metre. “Looks like we’re going to have to find a charging unit” said Admeet looking down the dingy corridors of the lab. “Be careful” said Klazor, “I never stray far from the main nest but I know that down there it is dangerous. Use that pulse cutter of yours wisely. Most of the ammo is gone when they abandoned the lab but you may come across some in the maintenance shafts down below”. “Thanks” said Admeet. The two walked of down the lab corridors in search of a power unit while Klazor stayed near the nest of the Dagger Roaches.
