What has Modest Mouse done for music that the bands I listed haven't? Are you going to argue that they are more influential and have done more for music than any metal band? Because that is what you said. They haven't done a damn thing for OR to music compared to the bands I listed in my original post. They ain't no pioneer like Black Sabbath, they ain't no NWOBHM legend like Iron Maiden, they didn't give exposure and credibility to thrash like Slayer did, help making it mainstream and giving heavy metal bands a shot at major labels and touring opportunities and on and on and on. And you're on my jock for mislabeling Led Zeppelin as heavy metal but then you go around and call Tool a heavy metal band? You're the one who has it backasswards.

You call Zeppelin metal but Tool isn't? That strikes as strange. And once again (god, I'm tired of explaining this) you think a band is important if they sell records. I think a band is important if they make truly intelligent music. We are looking at this from two different sides. And anyone who would argue that the backstreet boys have done a lot for music obviously has their musical priorities screwed up.

They did do a lot for music. They made pop, particularily boy bands, fun and profitable again. As much as you think it sucks their were plenty of younger people who really liked it so it was good in one sense. I'd say Tool is more of a prog rock band or industrial band than heavy metal. When I say they weren't as influential as the bands I listed I mean no disrespect to Tool, I have 3 of their albums and a lot of their stuff on my computer now. Very, very good band. And to kind of segue it with the other bands their cover of Zep's No Quarter is one of the best ****ing covers I've ever heard.

But that's what I'm talking about. You consider doing something for music to be on the radio and having a lot of people like you. I don't. I think that this hurts music when you flood the media with garbage. The problem is that people don't like to feel threatened by something that actually makes them think. They want music to thrash and or dance to. Is this wrong? No. But it does make it extremely difficult for bands like Modest Mouse who make truly extraordinary music to even make a living. Back in 97 a documentary was made about Modest Mouse. They already had five albums out at the time but Isaac Brock was so broke that he had to ask the camera man for a buck so he could buy a beer. This is because the musical atmosphere right now tries to suffocate revolutionary bands. And it's because of the mindless garbage bands monopolizing peoples ADD riddled minds.

In the end we are both right. There is more than one way to look at music and also more than one way to look at what the word accomplishment means. I (and most musicians like me) consider an accomplishment to be the creation of a truly great album. Nevermind how it sells. Other people think differently. So we are going to disagree.

Okay, we'll agree to disagree. Anyhow, back to music. Anybody a fan of Mike Patton stuff in here? What do you think of his new band, Peeping Tom?
Oh, and FNM has always been one of my favorite bands. Epic was the first CD I ever bought in 4th grade. Still spin the original disc to the day even though I treated it like crap when I was little.

The new Tool album was most terrible... Except that one track where the vocalist is tribalesque. Too bad it didn't warrant the purchase.

You know what I hate? People who dismiss commercially popular groups, like the Black Eyed Peas, as 'corporate bands.' Such ignorance.

It's not because the BEPs are commercial, it's because they just aren't that great. Good music should convey emotion methinks. I can't tell if My Humps is a smutfest or a satire.

You shouldn't take My Humps as a representation of their definate style of music. That was one their poorer works (much poorer), every musician has that occasionally. They have done some really great stuff in the past, IMO.

Okay people, the new Tool album kicks arse. Don't listen to it once and bash it.
Tool didn't stand a chance of pleasing everyone this time around, as they went in such an extremely technical, advanced direction with Lateralus. If they had gone further into that, people would have said they couldn't get into it. If they had done the same, people wouldn't have liked it being similar. They went a bit different, and people say it's not good. They didn't have a chance of 'winning' this time around, so don't look at 10,000 Days like that, because it is amazing in its own right.

I've listened to it several times, to see if it wasn't just a hard pill to swallow. It just didn't really wow me. Guess it was because I wasn't into Tool that much previously.

You'd be surprised with what you here from them. You might actually like some of their stuff me thinks. Kind of like how I thought Placebo was a sissy high picthed man voice band, but then they have awsome songs like Haemoglobin and Black Market Blood.

Before they got that girl in the band their CDs were political/social commentary old skool raps with PA slapped on them. They went from spitting rhymes that were technical and hard as steel on albums like Behind the Front and touring with The Pharcyde to "My Humps, My Humps, My Lovely Lady Lumps." They oughtta be ashamed.

Genesis is pretty good. I saw a guy break a lamp getting to "into" a drum solo.
Grand Funk Railroad is good too. The others I'm drawing a blank on. Whats so bad about playing the things your fans liked to begin with? I think it shows a lot of integrity to stay true to your roots instead of buying into this bullcrap that on every album you have to "evolve" or experiment. Evolve by staying the same.

I'm not saying that you HAVE to evolve. Once again, you twist my words into things they don't mean. What I'm saying is when you purposely aim for a certain style instead of just creating music the result will not be good. You see it all the time if you know what to look for. For instance, Dredg. Their first two albums were brilliant. The first was much heavier than the second but the second was much more atmospheric. Before they even started writing the third album they announced that they were going to make it a combination of the two styles. They hadn't even written a single riff yet and they had decided what it was going to sound like. The result is one of the worst albums I have ever heard in my life. And it's all because they tried to be SOMETHING instead of just BEING. They didn't stay honest to themselves.

It wasn't directed at you, and if it seemed hostile towards you I apologize. But a lot of the time I've seen a band evolve into something it wasn't supposed to be, into something not as good as the original. For instance, Vanilla Ice tried to evolve himself into a hardcore gangsta rapper, and then, even goofier, a metalcore act. Vanilla Ice should have stayed true to himself, copped that he was white, and produced good pop music. But no, he wanted to "evolve" because his current stuff wasn't selling. Instead of upping his game he tried to change games. Its like a linebacker saying "Man, I suck at pass russing. But instead of upping my pass rushing through practice I'm going to quit the team and announce myself for the NBA draft."

What you're describing is trying to be something as well. No band should purposely stay the same and no band should purposely change. As a musician you have to do what is natural or you are merely rehashing someone elses style.

Yes, I like all of the bands you have mentioned, though I do not know much Blind Guardian, and even less Sonata Arctica, as power metal tends to bore me after a while.
