I'd rather not buy a magazine when I have the collective consciousness of the Internet. I'll see what people say (I also asked on the Steam forum), and if I don't get a definitive answer I'll check out PC Gamer.

Yes, but with a PCG mag you get no crap whatsoever, only verifiable fact. More to the point, they also know how to use the internet, know where to look, are likely more skilled at research than you or me, and have 10 or so people working on it at the same time. They then review the latest gear, and (this is the bit that should interest you) present the latest version of The Rig with the month's upgrades.
The Rig is a computer built to three specifications:
It must be capable of running every single PC game available today.
It must be capable of running every PC game released for the next two years.
It must cost under £1,000 pounds to build.
As such, every component is the very best representation of value obtainable. And on the cover disc you'll be able to get The Big Gear Hunt, which shows the best deals they (experts on PC's, the internet and research) could find.
Oh, and there's the rest of the magazine. It's good.
