ODDBOXX: Bugs & Crashes

UPDATE: A patch for Munch's Oddysee has now been released. JAW's offices will be closed over Christmas, after which they will begin working on Stranger's Wrath.

As you're all probably aware by now, the Oddboxx was released yesterday (as of this post) with brand new ports of Munch's Oddysee and Stranger's Wrath.

Unfortunately, things have gotten off to a rocky start: numerous people have complained about technical issues when trying to play these games.

JAW Ltd. (the team in charge of the SW port) have been very quick to respond to these criticisms, and are working on finding out the source of any issues so they can release patches to fix them.
I think it would be nice to help them, so here's where this thread comes in.

If you have experienced any bugs, crashes or other technical issues with the PC ports of Munch's Oddysee or Stranger's Wrath, post them here!

BEFORE YOU REPORT IN

Check that:
  • your PC meets the game's system requirements (see below)
  • all of your drivers are up to date
  • verify your Steam files (some people have reported broken files)

Munch's Oddysee requirements:
:

OS: Windows XP or higher
Processor: Intel Core2 +
Memory: 1GB
Graphics: nVidia Geforce 6600 128MB
DirectX®: DX9
Hard Drive: 3.8 GB
Sound: DirectX®9
Stranger's Wrath requirements:
:

OS: Windows XP or higher
Processor: Intel Core2 +
Memory: 1GB
Graphics: nVidia 6600 or better or ATI X1600 or better (256MB+)
DirectX®: 9
Hard Drive: 1.9GB
Sound: FMod based
OpenGL: 2.0+

WHAT TO REPORT

When posting issues, be sure to include:
  • your OS
  • your Processor
  • your Graphics Card
  • your RAM
  • a detailed report of the issue/bug you experienced (screenshots and videos are helpful too)

HOW TO REPORT

There's a few different methods you can report an issue:
  • Email JAW Ltd. at info@jawltd.com - this is the recommended route
Post in this thread - I'll be linking this to JAW so they can keep track of it
Tweet @jawltd - JAW Ltd.'s Twitter, they're constantly communicating with it
    Tweet @AbeMudokon - Oddworld's Twitter, similar to JAW's
PM me - if you aren't comfortable with any of the above methods, I can pass along your report anonymously
NOTE: JAW Ltd. are NOT responsible for the Munch's Oddysee port, so don't report any bugs for that game to them. We don't currently know who was in charge for MO, I'll update this post when more information is available.

JAW Ltd. has taken over Munch's Oddysee's development, so you can send your bug reports for that too.

IF YOU AREN'T EXPERIENCING ISSUES

If you can play the games without issue, please still post your PC's specs, as this will help the developers work out where any issues are coming from.

One last thing: try to keep on-topic, the purpose of this thread is to help JAW and co. fix bugs, they don't want to wade through tons of useless posts.

Works fine on my hardware using "custom" resolution of 1680x1050. Only medium resolution works in the default resolution list built into the launcher.

Specs:
OS: Windows XP 64Bit
Memory: 4 GB Ram
Cpu: 3Ghz Core2duo E8400
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT (1GB VRam)
Graphics Driver version: 6.14.12.5896
Software: No malware or otherwise dodgy system wide hooks/anti virus things etc

I just downloaded stranger but every time i try to launch it, it says that the game is currently unavailable and that i should try at another time. I assume it has nothing to do with my pc specs (they are within the requirements) but i am new at steam. I did verify the files successfully. Munch works though

my os is microsoft Windows 7,4gb ram, graphics card ati,and for the processor i dont know...(this is my dads computer i downloaded the game to)(as for my laptop:processor:intel celeron CPU 900 @ 2.20GHz 2.19GHz,ram memory 2.00 GB,sys tipe 32 bit,os windows vista home basic, laptop is lenovo) the probs are in munch the freez happens at the beggining at the game while collecting spooce, and in strangers wrath the anims are frozen excepts for arms weapons and eyes....

lismati 12-21-2010 10:28 AM

Processor: Intel pentium 4: 3Ghz
Ram: 1 GB
System Windows XP x32
Graphics: nVidia GeForce 6800 XT

Munch crasches on menu: New game untill you chose begin, or tell me what happened, Gamespeak doesn't work at all, options work. On Stranger I normally go in menu, type in my profile name, and it displays loading level forever (for about 15 minutes, later i turn the game off)

Oddey 12-21-2010 10:36 AM

I have looked at my specs and it would seem they match the requirments. I have 4 GBs of RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT, and an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9400 with 2.53GHz each. I do have Vista, so I could always blame that, but I doubt it is at fault in this scenario. SW is frought with problems, some affecting gameplay, others, not so much.

The biggest problem is the fact that switching into first person usually freezes the image in place. This glitch seems somewhat situational however, because sometimes I can use first person, other times, I cannot.

The second biggest problem is the framerate. My graphics drivers are fully updated, if NVIDIA is to be believed, so that is not the problem. From what I can see, my PC meets the requirments, so that does not seem to be the problem either. It may be that the resolution is not set to a proper level, but I am rather uncertain as to what resolution to actually set it to. I do not really know what the problem is, but hopefully someone does.

There are a handful other glitches, like the water shimmer being visible through terrain and structures, the little build-up sound not stopping at the correct time after cashing in a bounty and some animations being wrong. Nothing major to note.

IMO it would be better to post problems on Steam forums:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...play.php?f=447
Reason: JAW stuff (who now has in control both MO & SW) shouldn't maneuver between various forums in search of bugs... and topic on Steam forum is older :)

Feel free to post there as well - I just thought it would be nice if our forums could chip in their own contribution.

And you just know Gilrod will be along eventually.

EDIT: I don't know how many of you guys this will help, but:
:

UPDATE 2: We are hearing if you have an ATI/AMD graphics board, as a temp fix for corrupted graphics then disable the "Catalyst A.I." mode under the Advanced Settings in the Catalyst Control Panel tool.
If you can, please test this and report back?

Fred The Fuzzle 12-21-2010 07:42 PM

Watch the video (Made by me) I've fixed the lag, I had to do something in compatibility mode. I've also fixed the mouse (Sort of) through Autohotkey.

Munch works flawlessly except for the fact if I press the "ACTION" button it crashes. :fuzemb:

The T-Pose position is quite funny to watch.

Specs:
Intel i7 980x 4.2 ghz (Over clocked)
Asus/nVidia GTX 570 Graphics card
12 GB of 1600 mhz DDR3 ram
Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate

Thanks to anyone who can help. :fuzwink:

I finally got Stranger's Wrath to work after overcoming the "This game is currently unavailable" problem by installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86).

But now I have more problems:

1) Cutscene Sound: Sound on the cutscenes runs for about 10 seconds, then starts stuttering while the video continues to play normally. Pausing the cutscene and resuming it makes the sound continue in sync with the video... For about another 10 seconds.

2) Terrible frame rate: Even on its lowest resolution, Stranger runs like a dog on this machine - about 6-9 FPS, which makes it unplayable. :( Something to do with my specs, perhaps?

I don't really understand why, this thing runs games such as World of Warcraft and Portal that are, in theory, more resource demanding than Stranger should be considering the original Xbrick was about half as slow as my dinosaur computer.

My Specs:
(Yeah, yeah, I need to upgrade and that - Should be enough for Stranger though)

OS: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: 2.17 GHz AMD Athlon XP 3000+
Graphics Card: Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb
RAM: 1.00 GB
Have DirectX 9.0c.

Many thanks. Oh and JAW devs, if you are reading this: Thanks for at least porting the games to PC, I have faith that you'll get them working somehow, you've given these games a new lease of life by making them more available than they previously were. Thanks for being responsive at least - people have been incredibly rude to you. Don't take it to heart, and keep up the good work. :)

What you've stated there is the precise reason why this is clearly a bug and, thus, fixable.

Manco 12-21-2010 10:40 PM

JAW just retweeted this:
:

@jawltd I had my Munch issues fixed after restarting Steam and getting an 800 MB D/L. I think that's just Steam noticing a messed up D/L.
Could anyone experiencing MO issues give this a shot and report back here?

My Munch's Oddysee Crashes after about 3 minutes of Gameplay. The whole menu works fine though.

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz 2.34 GHz

To fix Munch, just run it in Compatibility Mode for WinXPSP2 and Admin Mode.

Still crashes for me... maybe VSync helps fixes things? I noticed the game runs at like 500fps for me

I reinstalled Win XP. Just installed all actualisations and Service Pack 3. Abe's oddysee shows no graphic (just sound, no graphic, but you can play it.) AE is the same, just videos show, game's not. MO shows weird message - "XBOX Renderer Creation Error. Error String from renderer was: "D3DERR_INVALIDICALL". Stranger says that the game isn't avaliable yet.

Thats cause you're missing a ton of stuff it needs, I.E VCRuntimes and DirectX!

lismati 12-22-2010 08:22 AM

Maybe. I install Visual C++ right now, later DirectX, and reinstall Steam, as I have no registry files whatsoever.

shooplor 12-22-2010 09:16 AM

# your OS: Windows XP service pack 3
# your Processor: Intel pentium 4 3.0ghz
# your Graphics Card: Ati radeon X1600
# your RAM: 3GB

-On Abe's oddysee some error sometimes when I close the game but doesn't corrupt anything so It's not serious i guess.
-Haven't started Abe's exodus yet so I don't know, but no one else seems to have a problem so I won't have a problem too.
-Munch starts and runs great but I get custom crashes in the beginning so I can't play. Also there are custom sound mutes in videos and in game.
-Stranger's Wrath starts but I get a black screen and only hear the sounds, and I can move through the menu but don't see anything.

I am disappointed with the minimum requirements of the games. They should be much lower. If these games are not well optimized they shouldn't have been released yet. But I am a big fan of OI and they're my favorite company since I was a kid, so I won't be critical and will give them time to release the patch in which they should try to fix much more issues than just the most oppressing ones.

Chubfish 12-22-2010 09:40 AM

Abe's Oddysee's close error has been around for quite a while before the Oddboxx, even off of Steam; it's completely harmless (but it is indeed annoying).

Manco 12-22-2010 09:44 AM

Guys, while it's great that you're reporting AO and AE bugs, I think you should maybe stick to MO/SW bugs for now, since they're JAW's number one priority.

EDIT: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...3&postcount=22
:

Stranger:
1) We are aware of a performance killer in the game, and we are fixing it. This does seem to be caused by some discrepancies with different driver versions, and some of the code we used. We will nail it and release a patch.

2) Corruption, again we are onto this, and is likely related in some way to the above, but currently it only appears on ATI boards with Catalyst A.I. enabled.

3) Controls, we're completely redoing the controls stuff, so that you can set your own entirely, be that joypads/keys etc. This is something that really didn't occur to us, we though *wrongly* that PC gamers wanted easy options, not complex options, hands up that is our bad, but we ARE fixing that.

Munch:
Crashes: We believe we have fixed these now, we've been running a version here for a couple of hours with ZERO crashes, which we will continue to play with throughout the day, and touchwood get THAT patch out later today.

Controls: As someone has said the game does have full control customization in there via the config screen. So not sure if there's anything extra your guys would like looked at in this regard?

Audio: We have repeated an issue with some audio missing, but only on Vista, we are looking into this.

Chances are we will get the Munch crash fix out later today and then carry on with improvements in the New Year, UNLESS something else critical arises.

In regard to Stranger, we want to get fixes out as soon as we can, and we will.

Thanks

Stewart

Hmm, I installed everything that I could, and it still doesn't work.

Scraby 12-22-2010 01:36 PM

i figured it out, afther exiting the cave, you can go normaly, but we need a speed runner to collect 50 spooce use them and exit, this would help and the game should run normaly then!

Manco 12-22-2010 01:39 PM

Looks like the MO problems may be getting fixed real soon: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...00&postcount=1
:

Anyway, we have JUST submitted a new build to Valve to post as an update.

I don't know how long it'll be before it is up there, but I'd ask you all to try this and let us know ASAP if this cure's the Crashing issues in Raisins Cave.

We found some stuff that was hooey and altered it. On 3 machines that we did repeat the crashes on easily, this build does NOT crash at all, so touchwood you guys find this too and that you can enjoy the rest of the game.

Scraby 12-22-2010 01:56 PM

i lost my mind trying to speed run to collect 50 spooce,i made it to 50 but i was in a rush and forgot what button was the release and the game crashed :/

Windows 7 Home Premium
Intel Core I7 920 @2.66ghz
Nvidia GTX295
12GB DDR3 Corsair RAM

Well, Munch used to crash after 2mins until I ran it in compatibility for XPSP2.

But Stranger is a mess for me.

Firstly, just let me point out that when people think the loading that says 'The Way of the Hunter' is just long, it isn't. The game has just crashed and you need to Alt+TAB.
It happens on every resolution for me.

Also, when I try to run in 'Full screen' and 'Ultra resolution', it comes up with an 'Error: Display mode failed' and reverts to windowed mode.

Damn, I hate ports.

I'm only correcting someone so there is no further discussion, and where it might not be one that's actually that bad, it's a bug nonetheless.

I do know that MO and SW are more urgent though so:

There is an issue with Stranger's Wrath running on ATI graphics cards that prevents me from even running it on one of my PC's; will post specs when I can.
