Gentlemen...
And lady.
The release of Minecraft and the full-on terrain generator approaches, and with it the question once again arises, What Are We To Do About It?
Strongholds, mooshrooms, tundra, Nether Ruins and something about The End of somewhere or other beckon, and due to our vast thirst for exploration at the dawn of 1.8, on our current server it'll perhaps be harder work than is justified to find much of it.
So, question time.
A plan has been suggested to up our roots and move to a new server, using clever technomagic to move some of our creations in what shall henceforth me known as Dripik's Server to a new world.
So question 1:
Do you think we should create a new server and transfer some of our buildings?
If no, proceed to question 2.
If yes, proceed to question 3.
Question 2:
What, then, should we do? Nothing? Explore harder? Ignore all new content and hide in the skeleton dungeon under Rupture Farms? (Oh darn, but skeletons are getting a new sound).
Question 3:
If you side with the server transfer plan, what buildings should be taken? All of Genesis? All of Exoddus? And if so, what of outlying structures like Nikki and Rob's mountain retreat? Ench's floating islands?
Please place your answers to the above questions in a stamped, addressed envelope and post them to this thread; we want everyone's opinion because this will effect everyone who uses the server.
My Highly Controversial Opinion
In my eyes, the fun of Minecraft is exploring and building. The most activity we have on the server is when new-joined players are at work, when there's stuff like Exoddus for everyone to be doing, or when people actually have a specific project in mind that they want to work on.
Changing server would give us a ton of stuff to explore and do, but once one person discovers a Nether Ruin, a Stronghold, a mushroom biome, an NPC village, The End, then that stuff is done and the excitement goes away. If we take all our buildings with us then there's nothing more to build.
My proposition which everyone may hate is this: Let's go and take the bare minimum, like Rupture Farms and 2Fort. People can pack up any supplies of diamond and lapis and stuff that they wish to keep and put them in RF for the transit (or in an unobtrusive cavern underneath so as to avoid making a mess) and then we take just the huge WiPs with us to our Brave New World.
Once there, we build a village with less grandeur and space than we gave to Exoddus, and then are encouraged to spread out and explore and build in the nearby-to-distant area. People stopped coming on a lot after their creations in Exoddus were finished so I feel that it'd be good to make less of the town and let people save their creativity for the wider area. Let the town be a place for farms and a portal and other communal shizzle, and only smaller personal dwellings. Then we give the town (Monsaic Sanctum as a name?) a railway station and people can help donate materials for transport.
(I do note that when we were asked to fill a chest with wood, we rose mightily to the occasion, so having somewhere where someone can stick a sign saying 'I need 30 gold and two stacks of iron to build a rail track to houses in the east' or 'I need the tunnel running from here to the desert in the north to be finished and smoothed off' would probably get a good response. What I'm getting at is that we should all work together for communal projects, even if we don't do any building.)
People can decide how much they want to take with them in terms of luggage (though anyone filling more than 5 dual chests is liable to get a load of rocks dropped on them), and since we're leaving the old world I don't see much harm in cannibalising the old buildings for supplies, such as rail track.
It'd also give us access to animals, which are hard to come by at Exoddus. Give us something to start farming with.
The final reason for suggesting this is because not only are there new things we could make, but I believe many of us feel we've built things on the server that we could in light of new material, knowledge and abilities, do better. It'd give Havoc a chance to build a hotel with a front bit, me to build my Dark Tower somewhere less sociable, and so on.
Some may wish to bring some more buildings along, and if you really must, ok, I guess. But I'm not overly fussed by my stuff at Exoddus or Genesis (though I may reproduce my obsidian tower if we do this), but I accept that there are others who have put a lot of effort into things, and want to focus on working on new projects rather than resurrecting things they've built before. So ok, maybe some things can be carried over. But then, why not Montecito? Why not the base at Genesis? Why not Nile Lair and the mountain retreat and everything else so we have the same issue on the new server of being a million miles from new chunks as we do on the old one, and everything we do place may stamp on a stronghold or an NPC village. I propose that we don't take much. Not the whole of Exodus or Genesis, for example.
Finally, I'd like to place the idea on the table that we wait a little before doing this. In a few weeks Notch might be announcing plans to introduce lollipop forests and nuclear volcanoes, and then we'll have this same issue again (or maybe we'll just build another nether rail). I'm not saying I think we should wait, but it's something I think we should consider.
Ok, I'm done.
