Minecraft - OWF server
 

The server was originally started by Dripik, who ran it at home on his own computer. With only a few hours a day to log in and play, and the server getting busier, we decided to try running a dedicated Minecraft server which was available 24/7. It has been running ever since and has grown a LOT since the start. The administration of the server has since then been taken over by Havoc and Darkhoodness, with a few others acting as server moderators.

On August 7th 2012 we added a second server which hosts the Tekkit mod pack.

Joining the servers
At the moment the servers are whitelisted, meaning that everyone who isn't on the whitelist will not be allowed on the servers. We do this to protect our creations from random grievers and so the servers don't become over-populated. As such, the only way to get a spot on the whitelist is:

Be an active contributing and/or liked member on the Oddworld Forums. Already white listed players are allowed to invite friends/family to the server, under their own responsibility.

If you think you fit these requirements you may send a PM with your Minecraft username and motivation for joining to either Havoc or Darkhoodness. If accepted you will be notified and added to the whitelist for both servers.

Server rules
Here are some unofficial rules and guidelines that most people agree with and find to be common sense. Not set in stone, but bear them in mind.

• Don't steal things from other people's chests and/or creations. You will be instantly banned if caught doing this.
• Fill in your Creeper holes near inhabited areas (if you're far away and not near other people's creations it's not important).
• Don't leave floating trees and remove big trees entirely.
• Respect other people's creations.
• If you have to go AFK for a while, please log off the server so that the rest of us can sleep when it gets to night.
• Before you build, take a good look around and notice where the location of other people's houses and creations are, especially if you plan to build something insanely large or obstructing (for example don't block the line-of-sight between the OWI logo and the main base). Check with your neighbours first. A good place to build your own house/base is on the outskirts of the inhabited area, not too close to people's creations, where it doesn't look like anyone has built yet.
• If you remove trees near inhabited areas for wood, replant saplings.
• Stuff in the community chests in the base is for everyone - Just don't take everything, rely on using your own stuff when you can, and be sure to make your own contributions from time to time.
• The apartments (Genesis) and reception building (Ma'spa) were built by Oldnile (Dripik) to house newcomers. When you first join, feel free to pick an un-inhabited room to use until you build your own base.
• It's best to not wander around inhabited areas at night unless you really have to, then you won't be ambushed by creepers and leave holes everywhere.

Rules specific to Tekkit:

• Don't use quaries near inhabitted areas to avoid digging into someone's underground base or something.
• If you want to experiment with nuclear power, please do so in a very remote location OR build a very solid reinforced bunker to use it in.
• Don't even think about nuclear power unless you know what you are doing.
• Bodies of lava or oil can be claimed with a sign. Fair use applies here, don't go around the world claiming every single lava or oil resource you find. Preferably take one at a time.
• Due to most of us living quite a distance away from each other, Stargates can be requested per main location (your house, distant mine, stuff like that). You will have to collect obsidian yourself and build the gate in the shape of a Nether portal. Ask a mod or admin to activate it for you when done.

Getting around
The server has gotten pretty big since the original base and has been divided into several key locations.

Genesis Base - The original world we started in. Many buildings to be found, including Rupture Farms, which are mostly connected by a rail system built by Darkhoodness.

Rupture Farms - A huge project by Darkhoodness to replicate the infamous meat factory from Abe's Oddysee. A must see attraction on the server.

Exoddus Base - When 1.8 came out we needed fresh land to spawn some of the new stuff, so we traveled trough the nether to end up in an undiscovered piece of dessert. A large settlement has been built there since.

Ma'spa - The latest main world we created after the release of Minecraft 1.0. Most of the current building goes on in this world.

Skyblock - A challenge world where a number of objectives need to be accomplished with limited resources. Skyblock can be reached by going to Ma'spa and following the directions on the Skyblock board.

To quickly travel between these locations we use Stargates which are provided by a server plugin. You can pick a destination of your choosing and will be teleported there after stepping trough the gate. Wolves will not be teleported with you.

Building Legitimately
A kind of unwritten rule (until now) on our server has been that most of the creations are made entirely by hand without spawning in supplies or blocks. The only exception is Rupture Farms, which is so insanely big that Darkhoodness has started using Creative Mode about halfway trough.

Other than a few exceptions we will not be spawning in materials for anyone. So don't ask for free diamonds. The only thing you'll get is a huge pile of dirt.

Running the server costs money and currently Havoc is paying most of it every month. If you like playing on the server please consider chipping in for running it.

(EDIT: @Dripik: BTW, I have been trying to get on the Minecraft server for the past few evenings now and it's not been up. Have I been trying at the wrong time or something? You want me to finish that railway?)

The server seemed grand to be fair. I joined and I was chased by a creeper for like a minute... is that the initiation process?

Yeah, pretty much; also, getting blown up along with the guide who is showing you the way to a rich natural cave.

Dude, I spawned for the first time with 3 creepers in the immidiate area. I figured I'd just let them blow me up and be done with it.

Also, I didn't expect a minecraft server to be that resource intensive on a computer, you need a pretty good connection to host even 20 people at the same time O_o

There do seem to be an abnormally high number of creepers on the server.

That's because nobody has ever bothered to light up the starting area's surroundings.

Related: I once respawned in a tree and had to wait for dripik to come rescue me from the monsters below.

loads of mobs spawn around my tower. i might just set the forest on fire and deal with it that way.

Apart from a wave of new people, not much. Max established a feather farm not far from your shack, I was helping people with starting out, and there's an igloo that I haven't noticed before.

Where would one locate this House of Riches?

Look for Manco's shack on the map. You've been shown the map, right?

Yep, he has been in the area. You just have to find the Apartment Block, and from there, you have to go NWish into a snowy area. If you go up to the terrace of the apartment building, you should be able to see the Shack. On your was there you might just run into the mines where Hunter found all that stuff. On the downside, you might get lost and incinerated down there.

Those who are interested, the server is on right now. I'm more or less paying attention to the in-game chat, I'm actually busy with an essay.

I'm going to craft a diamond house, I'm not allowed gold because there is already a use for that and that's to finish the rail system.

By the by, where is this rail sytem heading to? All the main structures of the map?

Yeah, that's the plan. Currently, it connects Nile Lair Station, Castle Pyke (DH's work, as well as most of the train system) and Genesis Depot (the main base near the spawn). We're currently working on extending the tracks to the north, where the train goes underground for a while, possibly with a station in the vicinity of the Apartment Block and Manco's Shack.

We only need gold for the booster tracks, and since DH found out that we can be more frugal about them than previously, I'm sure you can stockpile a bit of gold for yourself too.
