Walter White is the main bastard in Breaking Bad, as you'll come to notice later in the series. He claims he does everything for his family, but in the end, it's just his inflated ego and sense of pride that make him keep doing the things he does. Throughout season 3 Walter just spirals down a tunnel of douchiness until a certain event happens that wakes him up and realizes he has to get over himself.
How far are you in the series, anyways? Things really start to pick up around the end of season 3, so if you feel things are getting stale, just keep at it. Season 4 is completely worth it.
Also, on the topic of Mad Men, I've been watching that a lot lately. I'm only at the end of the first season, so I haven't fully realized the potential all the characters have to be assholes, but I can already see a few of the characters (Draper and Campbell, specifically) getting on my nerves in the future. In fact, most of the mad men themselves have a fairly skewered sense of morality and selfishness to them, and when they do something bad, you expect some kind of reconciliation or admittance of guilt, but it never happens. They just keep living their lives, but you can still feel that they are feeling the guilt in the back of their head.
TV shows are great these days.
