EDIT: Wait, wouldn't a laconic synopsis be simpler than the real plot?
Not if the plot contains time travel, clones, robots, immortals, paradoxes, fourth wall breaking played for serious drama and the kind of twists you can only do in the medium, no. It's a multi layered sci-fi mystery and a one of a kind special story.

Also just saying

:
There's a reason I'm not an anime fan and it's because I don't like anime.
This annoys me to no end in this context.

What is anime?

Was Saya no Uta anime? Was the Death Note live action movie anime? Was that one scene in Kill Bill anime?

Seriously.

Are we going to have a thread saying 'What is anime?' now?

What is anime?
Anything Japanese/inspired by something Japanese/aping something Japanese and weird/crazy/nonsensical/dumb.

Also finished The Forgotten Sands yesterday. Overall I enjoyed it, but the little things that annoy me that I described in my last post still stand.

Judging by the first two examples WoF gave, though it may be a coincidence, I think he's complaining at me specifically.

As a rule, anime/manga is not my thing. I dislike the art style, and by either coincidence or the nature of the cultural divide, I also dislike pretty much every element of conventional anime/manga stories.

The four elements that will occasionally stack to produce something I like are:

An altered/unusual art style
A compelling story
Intriguing characters
(And most importantly,) General suitability to my personal taste

The fourth feeds back into all the others, since my idea of a compelling character might be radically different to yours. As I just said, by coincidence or whatever it is that shapes a person's personality (you're the psychology student), the things I'm not particularly fond of in stories happen to be the things that seem to come up in every anime that I would recognise as such.

I have no doubts whatsoever that you know more about anime than me. However, I know more about what I like than you.

That said, I do still have my guilty pleasures. I may be a black-hearted miserable sod, but a 10-year-old Welsh boy being hired as a teacher for a single-sex school for girls six years older than him, in Japan, and also he's secretly a wizard... Well that's just adorable.

The long and short of it is, I don't instantly hate all anime. It just tends to count negatively towards my enjoyment of it. If I enjoy an anime or manga, it's because it's managed to appeal to me to a degree that I can forgive/forget about the style.

EDIT: And no, the Death Note live action movie was not an anime. The anime was an anime, then they remade it (and by your words half-assedly) into a live-action movie. Hence I was able to enjoy it more without the art style that I PERSONALLY DISLIKE 'getting in the way'.

Frankly I'm personally offended that you think I just recommened you something with no thought about what you'd like. You offhandedly dismissed it not because you're not a fan of the medium (And believe me, it's very hard to find someone who would accept the vn medium), but, I assume, because you thought I was trying to plug you with something ONII-CHAN KAWAII

Do you honestly think I'd recommened something I, as an anime fan, like? No. I recommended you something that I, as a sci-fi fan like and something I believe you'd like too.

For the record, the series is probably the least Japanese I've played (Unless Japanese in your dictionary is a synonym for complex and multi layered) and for the record the game he wrote that got an official western release (Which, to note I've recently picked up and am playing) was released to direct commercial and critical acclaim.

So yeah. I may not know what you like as well as you do, but I'd like to think I know something about your tastes as you do make a lot of long posts here, and I don't appreciate my recommendation being dismissed because it looks anime and the thing I advised you not to read is weird and complicated.

I'm going to start his post with an apology. I'm not entirely sure what for, and some people would argue that that makes it meaningless. As far as I'm concerned, if I've offended someone (without intending to, anyway) that means I screwed up. So Wings, I'm sorry I offended you.

I watched the trailer again. I do trust your judgement, to an extent... But it just doesn't look that appealing to me. Considering that trailers have a reputation for misrepresentation*, and that if this was a Japanese trailer they may well have deliberately played up the "Onii-Chan Kawaii" element (I have no idea what that means, but I'm assuming it represents all that is stereotypical and jarring about Japanese animation) for their home audience, this could be a nasty case of judging a book by it's cover... But it just didn't seem all that much to me. I've already got enough media to fill my life three times over, so I usually just have to go with the impulsive 'Ooh that seems interesting' factor...

Ah, screw it, I've lost faith in my own argument. That seems to happen a lot these days. Maybe I'm learning. Or maybe I'm just going crazy.

After I've made all this fuss I've pretty much got to play it, haven't I? Tell you what, I'll play some of it and come back with a more informed opinion. Maybe I'll hate it, maybe not. But either way it gives no reflection on either me or you.

*Word. *Cross-armed rap gesture*

I don't really get that many recommendations from my friends because I'm notoriously and often arbitrarily picky. I hate 90% of everything, so yeah I've ended up quick to judge, as what a more arrogant me would call a 'self-defence mechanism'. But I see now that I've been unfairly suspicious of someone else's taste because it doesn't quite match my own -

*Light bulb*

... Oh, that's why I'm sorry. This really isn't just a stylistic trick to seem cute, I genuinely just got that. Eyuck, I'm a mess. I'll explain my theory of 'Emotional Lag' some other time.

:
I'd like to think I know something about your tastes as you do make a lot of long posts here
At first I thought "What the hell is he talking about...?" Then I realised with no small amount of horror that a) I have been spending my evenings rambling about video games, and b) a large proportion of those posts were concerning a genre I claim to dislike. It's all just pargraph breaks, right? I don't really do Wall of Text, do I? I'm becoming everything I ever hated...

You're a better spokesperson for anime than Strike Witch, though. I'll always appreciate that.

Still, after these sort of conversations I sometimes begin to doubt that I dislike anime at all, and maybe I'm just being pretentious and difficult... Then Strike Witch posts in Bits 'n' Pieces and I'm back to square one, no less confused but a great deal angrier. So she has her role to play I guess.

And now, as a peace offering and a humble sacrifice of my dignity, I will make catface.

Yeah seriously, get a chatroom you bloated strumpets.

I'm playing Duke Nukem Forever. I like it a lot, but I also have very little good to say about DN3D. DNF is exactly how a modern interpretation of Douk should be.

*unrelated to the convo... Sorta*

This morning I discovered that Fable III was on special offer on Steam for £10. So I thought "Sure, why not"... And ended up using up half my bandwidth cap for this month. :S Then I also found out that like Bioshock 2, it's integrated with shitty Games for Windows Live and several levels of shitty DRM. But what can you do.

As for the game itself, so far I've played 2 hours of it, and it seems to be alright with an interesting story and good graphics and atmosphere - Perhaps the combat is a little mundane, the game holds your hand too much, the menus are too simple, and the voice acting is sometimes a bit off. It doesn't seem to be anywhere near as good as Fable I either, unfortunately (where's my inventory screen? Where's my health bar? How can I use items when I'm either not in combat or buying them? Why must I hold down the use key for 3 seconds whenever I want to open a door?). But other than that it seems to be fun, although I'm not sure if it was worth me using up much of my bandwidth for it.

Still it's now on sale on Steam this weekend if others want to try it too. I'd say it's worth £10.

Anime is japanese cartoons you stupid fuckwits.

Also I'm still playing Starfox.

It's fun how all the bosses seem to have personality since they made the voices better.

Trying to decide what game I should pick up and finish.

I currently have in-progress playthroughs of Warrior Within, Okami, Persona 4, SotC, Borderlands, New Vegas, and a couple other games I’ve barely started.

I'm wanting to play Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep quite desperately now. I only know one person with a PSP and I don't know them very well. I'm considering buying a 2nd hand PSP along with the game, only to sell the console back to the shop after finishing it.

Yeah - I didn't know who to ask in regard to the Steam group. Can I get an invite?

In the mean time I've now been playing about 18 hours of Fable III, and I'm only half-way through the first part of the game. It's obviously that much fun for me, even though it's not the best game in the world by a long stretch. There's a lot to do in it though, and a whole micro-management aspect where you can buy all the buildings in a town and rent them out for a steady profit. Earning money to buy the properties in the first place is repetitive, but somehow I'm finding that fun. And I don't know why. :S

Apparently though if you want to win the game while being good AND save the population from a big bad monster, you have to make 3,000,000 gold. One way of doing that is to buy all the shops and houses at the beginning of the game, as soon as they're available, before you have a time limit. Challenge accepted.

Everyone must spend at least ten minutes with this playing in another tab, or else I will invisibly embed the soundtrack in my signature. You have been warned.

And if you think that's adorable/annoying, play it through to the end.

Although I'm playing it right now, I think I'll be turning off Dark Souls for the rest of the night to get over my frustration at not being able to kill the Asylum Dragon. He. Is. A. Cunt.

I picked up the limited edition version for £33. Epic bargain if you ask me. But Christ is it hard? I defeated the Asylum Dragon and headed off to the next level and attacked one of the NPC's.

He didn't like that and started beating into me with his sword of justice, killing me constantly and because I was just after sitting at a bonfire, I kept respawning and getting epically carved by the twat.

So I started a new game. As a pyromancer. It made the first boss easier, but nothing else.
