That being said, I think a lot of what you and Jacob said is true. Religion does cause problems. But it isn't a flaw with the religion, it is a flaw with humans. People always mess up what the Bible or the Quran, etc... is teaching them. But don't assume that religion is pointless. I get annoyed by plenty of "Christians" who think they know what they are talking about. Although I believe that obeying God's teachings in the Bible will help me live the best life (and death) I can, that doesn't mean I'm better than you.
Basically what I'm saying is that religion is always good, but religious people are often bad.

That is my exact stance on Christianity. While I don't hold a strong belief in the legitimacy of the Bible, I believe in the core beliefs of Christianity. These core beliefs are something that can't be changed, no matter how much a human may persist in trying to taint it.
Concerning power hungry people. If I recall, a few Popes in history have had the power of being 'Pope' go to their heads. They basically deemed themselves the title of 'God'.
That, like the creation of every denomination, is a result of greed and power. Although, there were a few legitimate denominations, like Calvinism. John Calvin (founder of Calvinism) could see the flaws in Catholicism, but he still believed in the core beliefs - somewhat similar to myself.
