That's because they decided to make their system compatable with audio CDs and DVD movies. It also allows the Xbox and PS2 to put more data onto their disks - allowing cheaper production costs on large games and, hence, they will get a larger profit with wchich they can invest into the development of new games.

Well I don't like gamecube . Cuz I now know what is most def old skool, and that is toejam and earl three and Sam and Max, Xbox exclusive. Funk it up Xbox. Anyway, what is the big deal over a propriety disk? Isn't that the same thing Nintendo did with the N64 cartridges. I mean, some of new games for that system ran almost 70 dollars! So, isn't the special disk more of a liability than an asset? And as for PS2, I just don't like ift for some aesthetic/style reason. Call me crazy, but I like the games that Xbox makes a little more than all of the series malarky that PS2 and to an even more outrageous effect, Gamecube, churn out.
