I agree with the point that luck is a rather fictional thing. Back in the old days, people made up things to make everyday life more interesting and fun, so I wouldn't be surprised that this 'Good Luck-Bad Luck' was just a game back then... "Black cat crossing your path? -5 Luck for you!" These superstitions were somehow preserved and still exist. If you do something which is believed to bring bad luck, you get nervous, fearing that something bad will happen to you. And, of course, you will blame bad luck when you actually lose something, get fired etc., and not yourself being unattentive and anxious.
And yes, optimism is good path to follow, AIN, so keep going.
