The title tells a lot... As you know, I am a very big jinxed person. And I think in this Forum there are others like me. So, jinxed persons of Oddworld Forums, I ask you (if you want obviously) to post here why you think to be unlucky and what happens to you. Now I'm telling you what always happens to me. It's not a catastrophe, but it's enough to ruin everyday my stupid life. So, here's it: everything is against me, I can't win in any context... everything I do is always a stupid shit. Everybody like insulting me, joking about my problems and when I think I am lucky... it always happens a bad thing that stops everything that was going to begin well! And with girls... it doesn't matter, I can't explain my situation :(, I prefer not telling you it. Everybody deceive me and I think they like doing it. I sometimes prefer the death!!! And this isn't my full list... but I can't explain everything. Now I ask you: what does it happen to you, jinxed persons?

Hmm. Well I have kinda low rep here which means I must be noobish somewhere and somehow, it also bugs me how the mean people always win and the rules don't apply, its like school. Aaand I'm a wuss. And the immature people on my schoolbus backstabbing, sexually abusing/harrassing and doing whatever they can get away with bugs me.

What is a jinx? The perception of repeated bad luck. What is luck? Luck is simply the outcome of an event with multiple possibilities, in the context of the desires of a particular human being. Fortune, then, is an outcome perceived as favourable by and to the observer, misfortune is an outcome that is deemed unfavourable.

These events can be considered random in nature, though when the only true random events are quantum in nature, our day to day experiences are influenced by what came before. The roll of a die is dependant upon the method of rolling and the orientation of the die in the hand, which in turn is dependant upon the forces that acted upon it in storage, the way they were put into storage and the outcome of the last roll. Repeat. We cannot possibly account for all these variables, so in this example, a die is functionally random. I just want you to think about that.

But if we consider apparently random events as being random, are people really unlucky? Most people will find the that number of favourable and unfavourable outcomes of random events that they experience are on or near the average. But as with all such data, it will be normally distributed (a Gaussian curve- the bell-shaped one). So yes, there will be people at both extremes that experience more unfavourable events than normal, and vice versa. This does not make them jinxed or charmed, they are as likely as anyone else to experience "good" or "bad" luck. It's just the way the cookie crumbles for them.

Of course, a major factor in this is what constitutes and favourable and unfavourable outcome for a particular person, for it undoubtedly varies from one to the other. If you consider more outcomes to be favourable than other people, you are likely to experience more good luck. And vice versa. I will return to this in a moment.

I don't think that people's happiness correlates to their position on the "luck" distribution curve, and nor can the curve account for the number of people who claim to be lucky or unlucky. Why? Selective memory.

A million random events happen to you every day, and the result of each is a coincidence. Few of them appear significant to you. You will not remember the millions of things that happen to you that you are ambivalent towards, for there are far more neutral outcomes than "good" and "bad" ones for most events. But those that pertain to your personal interests, you will notice. But some people remember more good ones than bad ones, and vice versa. Some people will make the best of an unfavourable outcome, see the bright side of it. Others will notice why the good outcomes were not perfect, reducing the number of "lucky" possibilities for them.

The reason? Attitude. This will go up and down with mood, but some people are naturally more optimistic than others. This will colour their perception of events, noticing the good more and making light of the bad, thus reinforcing their optimism. If you are pessimistic or grumpy most of the time, you will be the opposite. It is a hard cycle to break from, but many do and it brings a marked change in their demeanour.

So cheer up, AIN, you know what they say. Some things in life are bad, they can really make you mad.
Other things just make you swear and curse,

I was just rambling about the nature of luck. If you had a specific need for advice you should have come out and asked for it. What do you mean by "lost"?

I lost my best friend last year thanks to some dick who thought it would be funny to hack into my msn and call her a hopeless ugly slag with no hope for anything in her life. Soon after he managed to alienate my entire social group, and eventually the entire school :)

The song "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" posted earlier in this thread actually became my favourite song at the time.

It actually made me a better person.

If you lost your best friend, who's fault was it. Yours - Apologise, don't blame anything on her even if you felt it was her fault.

abe is now!: I understand completely what you're going through and how you feel, because it happens to me sometimes. I hate it when people do that, and sometimes it feels like there's nothing you can do about it. But honestly, who cares what everyone else thinks about you? You shouldn't. Just be yourself, and never let other people's negative thoughts about you effect you, because usually they are the ones with the problem.

Another thing: I like you, so at least you have one friend. ;)

AiN, Not sure what you mean by "lost", but you make it sound so final.
Who`s to say that this is a bad thing, in the long run it may work out ok.
Your like 13 , you will get over it, and luck got nothing to do with it.
This post , and other you have done, make me think that maybe you put
to much value on what EVERYBODY ELSE thinks. Just because they say it
does not mean it`s true.
Social stuff is not luck, it`s choices , and you will make plenty, some good and
some not so good, but hey that`s life.

Luck is for the lottery, not for life. ;)

I don't really think luck is 'all there', but I do have my moments. Like once, I had such a great day, sun out, good test results, got a present, yarda yarda, but then I crashed into a fence. So, Lady Luck doesn't like me that much.
To keep your friend, chain her to a post or something. That should do it.

I would recommend all to read the book The Luck Factor by Richard Wiseman. He's a psychologist who's actually done studies on people who consider themselves lucky or unlucky and discovered (big surprise) that there really is no such thing as luck - it's all in your mind. The book lists the good habits of lucky people - mainly about being positive, being gregarious (luck comes from your relationships with other people), noticing opportunities when they occur and being able to pick yourself up after a fall.

I won't give any more detail than that because I wouldn't be able to do it justice. For now I'll just recommend everyone to go to the library and borrow it. I can only hope that you don't get what I did: a creepy librarian who, on seeing the title, told me that he hoped I'd "get lucky".

I agree with BM. Luck is just the way you act. Although when it actually happens it feels alot like bad luck.

I feel that I'm unlucky and at the same super lucky. Because I am the "odd one out" at school. And I'm super lucky because I've got alot of stuff I like to use such as the computer, the other computer, the Wii, and an X-Box. Although the X-Box also helps to make me the "odd one out".

Your problems, I think, are about 50x worse than mine. So I can't say I know what you're feeling but I will say there must be someone with a more bigger problem. And like the song says "Always look on the bright side of life".
