Yeah, I do that a lot but it's mostly with my mum because she always waffles a lot. I let her do her thang and then I ask her to repeat herself so she only gives me the important bits of information second time round.

I always put my right shoe on before my left. To the point that if I pick up my left shoe first, I'll put it down and grab my right one.

I refuse to kiss my girlfriend when she has gum in her mouth...And I also over-use elipses, just because it's a compulsive habit...I don't have any idea why I do it, but I do...

Yeah, I overuse ellipses also. And brackets. And sentences starting with 'And'.

Jeez, the list of my bad forum habits could go on a while...

stingbee, quit posting so damn much.

This constant bull crap you keep spewing out is useless. You're constantly spamming. Just stop posting crap and save this playful banter for PMs.

For reals.

Dino, I'm pretty sure that the plural form of "ellipsis" is "ellipses."

Actually it's both the plural form of ellipsis and the plural form of ellipse. The point of that post was to point out my annoying habit of correcting people.

At least that's how it works round here.

And I suppose the ellipses thing depends on pronunciation. The plural of ellipse would be pronounced ellipses but the plural of ellipsis would be pronounced ellipsees. Fat lot of good that does online.

Incorrect.

( ) = parenthesis.

[ ] = brackets.

Brackets are used inside a parenthesis, which is why they are shaped differently. It's so that you can do (this and then [mention something else here] while keeping it all seperate and less confusing).

'Bracket' is sometimes used as a loose term to describe parenthesis and brackets in general. This is an incorrect but noted usage.

In your part of the world, perhaps, but in my little part (being at a university studying multiple programming languages, all of which use ()[]{}'s) we try to be a little clearer.

Final word: all you say may be factually correct. I just don't have to give a damn.

If you don't give a damn then why do you persist?

And I've always thought that the parenthesis and bracket thing was perfectly clear.

Meh. This argument could be continued in PM. So do so.

After all, parentheses and brackets have very little to do with weird habits, unless of course, your weird habit is arguing over punctuation.

I don't have many weird habits.

I tend to get really itchy when I'm nervous.
If I stay up all night, I tend to get really depressed between 3-6am.
Every now and then (every few weeks) I get mood swings. Nothing brings them on but I just get very annoyed very quickly at a lot of people.
Also, I get very paranoid. When everyone in my house goes out I have to make sure they are actually gone. I check every part of every room in my house.

It seems I have more than I thought... I probably have more but I can't remember them. (Plus there's a few I don't want to say )

Yes, yes my wierd habit is arguing over punctuation. My wierd habit is arguing over anything irrational, illogical, or just a demonstration of pure apathy. Like someone who can't be bothered to give a simple punctuation mark it's correct name so that people who actually took the time to learn about and understand the English language don't get confused by poor terminology.

I mean, is it really that much effort to be correct? Or do you just find it more convenient to make it perpetually seem like you're an imbocile? Perhaps appearing to have been educated to the degree that you can tell the difference between a bracket and a parenthesis wouldn't give Nate the level of "street cred" that he likes to maintain? So maybe he just hides it in the hope that he doesn't come across as having too much of that intimidating intelligence.

I mean... It's fine to be wrong, find out that you are wrong, admit your mistake, and do some learning to make sure you get the correct information. That's all part of the learning process. But I just can't understand the mentality of someone who upon encountering a correction on something that they have said, just points out that they know that they're wrong, but find it easier to be incorrect. My systems just cannot compute this illogical reasoning. I don't see any advantage to being incorrect... parenthesis is only three letters longer than brackets. So what the hell is the deal?

I mean you go to the effort to define George W Bush rather than just "president". You'd say Ford or Chevy rather than "Car". So why not Parenthesis instead of "bracket"?

I don't get it.

What?

It saves .3 seconds in speech, and in typing probably about .5 seconds. Considering that you're unlikely to say bracket or parenthesis more than once in a post, that's a saving of .5 seconds every time you make a post that has the word 'bracket' instead of 'parenthesis'.

Which will give you enough time to... uhm... move a few extra centimetres in your lifetime... Or maybe type an extra word over the same period of time...

Yep, seems worth it to me, I totally take it all back. I mean, who wouldn't
sacrifice appearing reasonably educated/intelligent for a time advantage like that?

Umm, how about, no?

If people would stop arguing with me then I wouldn't be forced to continue to demonstrate my irritating habit. Unless you submit I won't ever give up, I'll carry on correcting you until I have arthritis and chronic RSI so badly that I can no longer type. So it's really not worth engaging me in an argument if you're arguing for the illogical side.
