Buddy is Alf's, well... buddy. He helps Alf manage all of the fan relation stuff. Pleasing us fans was to much work for one mud to handle so he recruited his pal. Supposedly the inaccuracies with the Oddworld Map were because he asked a slig for help. But recent news suggests it was more likely because he has reverted back to his old brew drinking ways.

Better be careful Buddy or else Alf will stick you back in rehap!

It's also good to see that Crig has returned to his old job at the Dailey Deception. I guess slog herding wasn't his thing. I can't blame him.

Neither have I...

Although my inbox was way, way full...so maybe it was returned to the sender...and in that case.... *cries*

Or maybe he is talking about the last fan email from alf, which was really the first...

As usual, another great fan mail from Alf and those at Oddworld.

Special thanks to them for mentioning Pilot and I and the Odd Tour... I did not expect that at all. Thank you once again Oddworld Inhabitants.

What inaccuracies in the map?
lol, where to begin? Well, let's see:
  • Abe left from Monsaic Lines to get to Necrum, but the line seems to indicate he left from RupturFarms.
  • The distance between RuptureFarms and Monsaic Lines is far too much.
  • Assuming Mudokons can walk the same speed as humans, it will be about twelve miles (I think) along the line between Monsaic Lines and Necrum. Compare this to the map, and you'll see that Oddworld is certainly not ten times larger than Earth, which we know it is.
  • The line shows Abe left from SoulStorm Brewery to get to the Almighty Raisin's cave, when in fact he visited Necrum in between.
  • There are lines going between the factories in Munch's Oddysee, but Munch and Abe took teleporters (although that's only because OWI hadn't enough time to make proper cut-scenes between the levels, I should think).
  • The SpooceShrub Forest is marked as a point just beyond the Raisin's Cave - but Abe and Munch fall into another part of the same forest later on, nowhere near this mark.
  • The Mudomo and Mundanchee Vaults are marked outside of Necrum, which is very wrong.
  • It should be 'Vaults' not just 'Vault'.
  • Rupture Farms is one word.
  • The second 's' in 'Soulstorm' should be a capital.
  • The 'c' in 'Feeco' should be capital.
  • Apparently, Munch begins MO on land - which is clearly does not.

But then, if you drink Brew and ask a Slig for help, you expect these things.

ps - Haven't got my message from Alf yet, but it looks like it should be soon...

EDIT: I still haven't got a mail from Alf, but I just went to the old URL and it was all there! Alf hasn't even changed the password. Tut tut. But some great stuff, nevertheless.

Using Anna’s calculations as a template (go here), I took a look at the first Map of Oddworld and had a go at it myself. I came to the conclusion that Oddworld’s diameter is, at the very least, 1,360 miles.

At the same time (well, a couple of minutes after I did that) I did the same for the version 2.0 map. It gets better, as I now calculate the diameter to be 3,411 miles, which is quite an increase.

Trouble is, Earth’s diameter is 7,900 miles at the pole (longer at the equator). Getting Oddworld bigger is going to take more than just moving Monsaic Lines and Necrum closer together.

Plus, as far as I can tell, all the other errors remain in the version 2.0 map.

If you remember the last time Alf sent out an email, everyone was worried that they hadn't received it. Don't panic! OWI probably has so many fan email addresses that they must stagger the number that they do at a time

Jacob, I can't help but agree with you here. I'm probably one of the more "fanatical" Oddworld fans on the forums ... but even I think it is quite pointless to argue and pick holes about the map. Oddworld provided us fans with something that we had wanted to see for a long time. But I just can't understand why people would just go and complain about something that is more of a "fan" release ... not part of the games themselves. I just wish people would drop this whole map saga, or otherwise Oddworld might just realize that it's not worth releasing stuff like that in the future. It's okay to discuss Oddworld, but perhaps try showing OWI a little more respect in their releases, after all they are human.

Edit from Pilot: Or are they? *Mystery music plays*

I hadn't planned to make a joke of any kind, but I wasn't implying anything.

:

Who said I was complaining? I was pointing out the inaccuracies previously mentioned to satisfy Nate_dog_woof's question.

:

It's beginning to occur to me as if people took my post as a non-direct demand for an accurate map. You couldn't be more wrong (unless you start talking about flamingos). I love how Alf and Buddy have started their own little storyline to keep us amused until ME. It's great, following it I can really imagine how hard the Inhabitants are working for us.

I am truely appreciative of both the original map and also how OWI turned the critisism (though never hostile critisism) into something fun. I'd thank them personally, but I wouldn't want to intrude on them.

Happy map

I thought it was really clever how Alf turned the map inaccuraces into an "actual" oddworld occurance. Buddy on brew and asking a slig for advice. You can't be to hard on him. Could you draw a perfect map of Earth?

To me, it wasn't that you were complaining. But the fact that you were delving into something fictional and not enjoying the amusement factor is quite...upsetting (For fear of being flamed if i said the other word). But...whatever floats your boat.

Well, like I said, I enoyed how Alf turned the inaccuracies into a storyline. I also enjoyed the map in itself, it was beautiful, though obviously couldn't be said to be cannon.

Its just it came off immensly patronising.
Oh, well, then I'm very sorry.

Hey there is only version 2.0 of the map
and this one is even not 100% correct.
I think this will make a great article in the future:

How buddy tried to make a correct map.
Max I think you should send your list to Alf, so Buddy can make a 3.0 map

Dunno, I think actually marching up to Alf with a list might be a bit too agressive. See how people have started to stir at me just answering a question? Perhaps. If Alf or Buddy were to ask it of me, of course.

We'll see.

I agree, although I'd feel a lot safer if Alf were to approach me with that request. Or I suppose I could just ask him whether he would like a few pointers. Good idea, Xavier, I'll get on it.
