That map's really good. Has anyone looked at the labels on the compass?

It was especially good because in MO you don't know where the different areas are in relation to each other.

That's weird; I got mine. It didn't even get sent to my Bulk Mail folder; it was in my normal inbox! The power of Odd...

BIG EDIT: Hang about...

I know I'm coming across as a killjoy and a nitpicker, but that map cannot possibly be accurate (although it is very pretty).

According to AE, Abe and the other five walked from the Monsaic Lines to Necrum in a day. Judging by all footage I've seen of them, Mudokons walk at the same speed as humans. Most humans can walk two miles in one and a half hours (I can; and I consider myself an average human).
We don't know exactly when Abe set off from the Monsaic Lines, or when he arrived at Necrum Mines, but as they set off it looks around 8:00am ish. And we are told that they arrived after dinner time, so we can estimate that to be around 5pm.

So, using those estimates, it took 9 hours to walk from Monsaic to Necrum. That means they must have walked a distance of around 12 miles. And that's maximum; that doesn't even take into account that they must have stopped to rest occasionally.

If you get out a ruler and measure the distances on the screen, you'll see that (assuming the distance between Monsaic and Necrum is 12 miles as the crow flies; it is - just - possible to walk in a straight line from Monsaic to Necrum without cutting through dangerous Paramonia), you can calculate that 0.375 cm (which we'll round to 4 mm for the sake or argument) on the screen (on the left-hand-most map) equals one mile.

Measuring the 'boxes' (showing the areas explored in each game) on the leftmost map and comparing their width on the middle map (tricky, yes), and using these new measurements to estimate the size of Mudos in the middle map, shows that Mudos is roughly 200 miles in length. Fair enough... as we've been told it's a small continent. But 200 miles! That makes it even smaller than Britain! And look at the size of Mudos compared to the rest of Oddworld on the right-most map. Oddworld is supposed to be 10 times the size of Earth, but these maps say it's not so.

My dearest One, Two...
Tho protest too much!
Here are the facts:
One: According to A.E. it is never stated that the muds walked in One day. We see morning to dusk but there is no indication that this is the same day? When we cut to the muds running to Necrum, it could possibly be a different day but the same time of day. This is definitely debatable.
Two: There is no measurement of distance or miles on the map. None.
Three: Yes, Oddworld is 10 times the size of Earth.
Since there is no size comparision to Earth, then we can assume that the planet is indeed big.

Four: If Mudos is bigger than Earth, wouldn't it take longer for the planet to complete a full rotation? And if it is farther from the sun
than Earth, wouldn't the rotations be even slower still? And wouldn't that make for more daylight hours?

Wow, I didn't even think of the size of the planet and the speed of the rotation affecting the number of hours in a day, but it is correct. You really must have done your reaserch alf!

well I can say that logicly there are si hours sun and six hours night (except if thezre or more than one sun but since I allways saw only one shadow)and that there are 60 minits in a hour and there are 60 seconds in a minit...
the only problem is that we don't know the time of a oddworldian second...

BTW: I can say that because I found watch on the BrewMaster

so how long is an Oddworldian second ?

Thanks for reading my post and providing an explanation, Alf.

I just assumed that the journey from Monsaic to Necrum took one day, because Abe's narrations says 'by lunch time' and 'by dinner time'. It never occured to me that they might have been on separate days.

Although it does seem strange to have a burial ground that far away. They'd have to save up the dead guys and bury them in a big bunch to make it worthwhile.

:
If Mudos is bigger than Earth, wouldn't it take longer for the planet to complete a full rotation? And if it is farther from the sun than Earth, wouldn't the rotations be even slower still? And wouldn't that make for more daylight hours?
Not necessarily so. I've not heard of any scientific reasoning linking a planet's size, rotation speed and distance from its sun, but I'm only 16 and not a scientist.
However, one Earth day is around 24 hours. Mercury is a planet far smaller than Earth, and yet it takes around 58 Earth days to complete one rotation! And Jupiter is far bigger than Earth, and yet it rotates much faster than Earth does. As far as I can see, size has no effect on a planet's rotation speed. Or distance from the sun, for that matter, looking again at Jupiter which is further away from Sol than Earth is.

I was about to say 'if it's further away from its sun than Earth is from Sol, why does it appear hotter, not colder, than Earth?' But then I realised that the sun could be bigger too. Can we therefore conclude that Oddworld's sun is a Blue Giant as opposed to a Yellow Dwarf (like Sol)?

But as for this whole 'Oddworld is 10 times bigger than Earth' thing... now that really got me thinking.

The way I see it, there are 3 ways in which Oddworld could be 10x bigger than Earth: diameter, volume or surface area. It cannot be all three. I did some calculations to work out what Oddworld would look like for each separate criterion, and here are my results:

(sorry about the poor quality of the jpg: my webspace had to compress it slightly, and that distorted the writing somewhat. The circles are also a little iffy, because I did them by hand with a pair of compasses, then I had to go over them freehand to make the scanner see them)

As you can see, there's quite a difference! Which one is it, I wonder?

I was quite baffled by how small the 'volume' one looked, but a little bit of common sense and basic maths skills made all clear:

EDIT: I'm sorry if I came over as rude or in desparation to destroy all your explanations. I'm just being a typical primate and displaying my curiousity. Peace out.

ANOTHER EDIT: I just remembered something Danny posted a long while ago. If Oddworld is 10x the size of Earth, then surely the gravity must be far stronger? It is an absolute law of physics that gravity is stronger depending on the size of the body.
And yet, things on Oddworld seem to fall far slower than they would on Earth, while they should fall faster if we want to keep the laws of physics intact.

Is there something that cancels out the gravity, as Niteowl speculated? Could it be Spooce, perhaps?

Or mabye Abe and Munchs body have grown accustomed to the gravity on their planet, just like we have grown accustomed to ours. If you where born and rasied on the moon (don't ask how) and then your body would be built to live in that type of gravity, but then if you moved to Earth you would wonder how us earthlings can move so smoothly in our gravity, do you get what Im saying?

Although thin, most of the inhabitants on Oddworld are very muscular. That is probably one reason they can stand the gravity. Another could be that the many moons of Oddworld sort of weaken the gravity by pulling with theirs. I'm no scientist but that seems to maked since.
