Friggin' Soccer Hooligans!

A bunch of russian fans got pissed because they lost to japan and tore apart Moscow, one person was killed in the riots and many others were injured. What is it with soccer fans though? I have never heard of a riot of this magnitude happening over bass fishing or billiards!

There are lots of idiots who like football. I'm sure there must be an intelligent football fan somewhere. At least one...

Surprisingly, the Brits in Japan haven't caused any trouble yet. Very strange...

Yeh, well you think thats bad. Try sitting in a room full of homophobic footie supporters with your legs crossed, a bottle of Bacardi Breezer in your hand, pissed and then shouting "Come on Argentina!!" Instead of "Come on England!!"

Why is it that soccer is the only sport in the world that constantly has bouts of violence (and not just minor violence either, riots, stabbings, and more). Okay, sure there are other sports that have violent moments (such as the guy who bashed an opposition supporter over the head with a frypan when his snail lost in the snail racing championships ), but not in the amounts that soccer seems to have.

One theory is that it's to do with racial tension. Another is due to the "passion" of soccer fans. I'm not sure if any of these are true or not.

Well I really don't like soccer, it's so boring... especially to watch. So my theory is that it is so boring (i.e. no action, lack of scoring), that the fans have to release their frustrations somewhere, and they revert to violence!!!

Don't take the above too seriously, I just don't like soccer!

1. Because the supporters are idiots.

2. It's can be fun when you're playing but not in Games at school... You have to stop the game just because someone was 'offside'. Why can't people just play the game without the stupid rules that make it boring? Because the people who use the boring rules are all idiots.

soccer is brainnumbing. I know it predates Hockey by like five millenia, but doesn't it just seem like some drunk dilettantes version of the manly blade wearing brawl on ice collectively known as Hockey. No sin bin, instead, wussy cards. No checking and very little physical contact. Field is too big. The goalies aren't aweinspiring in their barbaric pad wearing glory, the just look like tipsy mooks wearing festive colored shirts. Not a lot of scoring. Violent after game riots in which you could lose your life in or at the very least get bashed with a beer bottle to the noggin. Face it, it may be the most popular sport that by no means makes it the best sport. Look at popular music. Using a soccer hooligans logic, Nsync is better musically than Soundgarden. Don't make me vomit.

Football just disgusts me really. Its the entity of the game...its stupid. And a shame that certain individuals can only bond with someone by discussing football (Somebody i know in R/L).

Ok, I am lost... are you talking about soccer (with the black and white ball ) or football (with the brown ball with laces )? Cuz you guys keep switching between the two. I understand that in Europe it's called football, but I am still lost on which one U R talking about. Yar, yar, yar... (Sea Captain McCallister-duh)

1. That's called Football.

2. That's called American Football.

3. I have consistently used 'Football' throughout this topic. I am English, therefore I don't call a game where you throw a ball 'Football'.

Just so you know, we're talking about Football. You know, the game where you use your feet to move a ball-shaped ball. Not the game where hands are used to move a more egg-shaped ball.

Don't talk trash to him, us dumb Merks get confused quite easily. But it is a common mistake so cut him some slack. "American Football" is a vastly better sport than that prissy stuff the Koreans are hosting. And, lucky me, my brother loves soccer, so I have to suffer through 4 hour long 1 to 0 soccer matches on the T.V> Oh the agony!

Actually it depends on which country you are in.

In Australia where I live if you use the term "football" you are referring to Australian rules football. But then it gets more confusing when you go to other states of Australia (NSW and Queensland), as the term "football" is used to refer to Rugby League.

Therefore Tom is right in saying that he's talking about soccer (boring game with black and white ball), as in England and Europe, that game is commonly referred to as football. Likewise in America, American football (or gridiron) is commonly refered to as football (even though they use the hands more than the foot!).

So really it's one of those words that depending on where you live can really take on a different meaning. The trouble is though that not everyone realizes the use of it in different countries, or may not know where somone is from.

On another note... great to see others on this forum who detest soccer in the way that I do!!!
