Oddworld Will we go to Mars?

Well I heard like in the year 2010 we might send man to Mars I think. I am not quite sure what year it's going to be but I know it will be in our life time.

Mann, think of it, Mars! Thats incredible. I hope someday civilians will be abel to do space travel and not just Astronauts. That would be very interesting. Could you imagine moving to a new home on Mars? And say that the person who moved to Mars was an Oddworld fan deciding to join these forums. That would be funny because when he or she joins he or she would put down for location "Out of this world or Mars" haha! I can see it now a martian oddworld tour! He or she would deffinetly hold the record living the farthest away from every body. Or it will be like this, he or she would write a topic saying "so where do you live?" And one of us would be like um Canada. And he would say oh yea I live on Mars want to come and visit hehe! That would be so wierd.

I reckon that it is from human nature to search for knowledge, and studying Mars can lead us to understand planetary dynamics, and perhaps apply this knowledge in our own planet, Earth. However, I'm not completely favorable to a travel to Mas with astronauts, in the next few years, because that would be extremely expensive. This extremely huge ammount of money could be used in a more practical way. like making people's life better.

Further, there is no point trying to "conquer" Mars. Americans conquered the Moon basically to "show off". The time was the cold war, and the USA had to prove their power to the world, and specifically, to the URSS.

WE have to worry about our planet first, before thinking about colonizing Mars. Mars will not save humanity if the Earth gets depleted or spoiled.

Look what's already happening nowadays: a very wealthy man spent a few dozen million dollars to be the first tourist on the space, a few months ago, and there is an european space program that gives any tourist the chance to experience microgravity for 3 minutes, hundres of kilometers high in the sky, for about 300 thousand dollars. I could think in a 300 thousand ways to spend this money in a better way than that...

There was a Calvin and Hobbes story in which they got sick of all the littering on Earth, so they went to Mars. When they met a Martian, it ran away, terrified.

Calvin: "Why do you think the Martian hid from us?"

Hobbes: "Maybe Martians don't like Earthlings."

Calvin: "Don't like us?! What's not to like?? There's nothing wrong with Humans!"

Calvin calls to the Martian.

Calvin: "Hey, you Martian! Come on out! We're not bad! We just came here because people polluted our own planet so much that... uh... what I mean, is... um..."

Calvin thinks, and turns to Hobbes.

Calvin: "So what are you saying, that our reputation preceded us?"

Hobbes: "Would you welcome in a dog that wasn't house-trained?"

Alas, you couldn't instigate all of them, or you'd only have 1 dollar to spend on each...

I believe someday we will not go to mars, but other solar-systems and galaxies.......... It possible that humans will carry on as different types of species, manipulating the gene becoming younger, and being able to carry-on photosynthesis for survival, basically taking things or proccesses from nature to benefit humans which can be done with genes, if science keeps building, the possibilities are endles... I say different species becasue some will adapt different skeketal structures for the different pressures of gravity some will not breath oxygen but rather take another substance in to survive, It is also possible that the human race will be altogether with an advanced integrated chip- searching throughout and finding the 90% of the galaxy humans do not know......... We very well might go to mars though, and someday once our sun dies out in about 5 billlion years we will find another earth because there are more stars in the universe than there are for every grain of sand on every beach on earth..........The only queston is will we unite to do this.?

Morphius: 4.6 light years to the nearest star, there is no way to slow down in space unless you hit something, therefore, any plausible speed to get you there would make you either burn up in an atmosphere or if the planet doesn't have atmosphere, go quite deep into the planets crust (possibly the mantel, depends on the planet).

Everyone but morphius: What most people don't understand about space travel is how much it screws you up. If you wish me to explain more please ask.

you are mistaken with technology, and you can slow down.........you can use matter and anti-matter........It is expensive but can be reached.....

What would you keep the Antimatter in?

Much as I am loathe to say it, I agree with Morphius that eventually we are likely to colonise planets in other star systems. That is if we don't wipe ourselves out before we get round to it...

All of you, read "A Step Farther Out" by Jerry Pournelle. Pournelle is a Sci-Fi writer, but ASFO is purely factual. It details methods with which, with current technology (and that was current technololgy in 1979, so imagine what we could do now), we could sort out some of the problems of our planet and even go on to colonise others. The only problem with his ideas is that they involve a huge investment in the future, into things like Solar Panels which, although in the long run they would recoup their cost many times over, they would be very expensive now. The sad thing is that ideas such as these are unlikely to be put into effect, simply because they involve an investment that is not likely to see returns in out lifetimes. It is sad that people would be so selfish as to reject an idea just because it wouldn't benefit them, but that's what would happen if these ideas were seriously proposed...

I agree, greed has a big place on earth but if people were to see how far the rabbit hole goes down they might find away to unite and live on...........
