I think Oddworld has given up on trying to be dark, unfortunately.

Going back to the tone for a moment - for me, AO and SW always had darker elements in comparison to the other OW games. I'm not one for depravity for depravity's sake, as I feel a lot of modern mediums unfortunately resort to that. But I always felt the dark elements of those games really helped portray the mystery and fallen state of OW. I kinda upped the anticipation in my gaming experience. AE and MO kinda went for the more goofier and slapstick, particular MO, it almost comes off as a buddy comedy in some aspects.
Another thing I liked about AO (and to be fair, AE too) was the H.R. Giger-esque influence in the general design. Paramites and Scrabs always seemed to have share similarities to the creature in 1979's Alien and I like the biomechanics of the Sligs. The fact surveillance gear and transport tended to resemble Glukkons also struck me of Giger's work, albeit, without the disturbing phallic overtones.
EDIT: In addition, OW in general also kinda has the Ridley Scott "used future" vibe.
