Getting into Doctor Who is my big 2014 goal. (I've got priorities) I've seen like half of the episode with the evil manequins, but I was pretty impressed. I intend to start watching the tv series and eventually go through the whole "expanded universe" shebang. But my question is, what am I getting myself into? Is there a huge continuity or is it usually just straight-up "Monster of the Week"? On top of that, if I DO watch the show, should I start from the beginning, or somewhere else? (I'll probably cave in and watch them all eventually, but as an introduction...) Also, are any of the sister series/comics/radio shows/whatever any good? I normally wouldn't ask so much, but I know how pleasing it is for a fan to introduce someone to their fandom.

Well, you can either be in the fandom (a whovian) which might make you excessively annoying, because I haven't met a "Whovian" who isn't, or, you can just be a fan of the show like me and the others here. I am a big fan, but still not a whovian.

There's a massive story arc from series 5-7 but basically just start from the beginning. Netflix has all the new episodes except a couple, but when you get to those you can just download them.

There are audio dramas, and a lot of them are really really good. They're made by Big Finish and you should probably check them out. As for comics, they're fun, but only the classic ones. The comics about the new series are aimed at little kids. You should probably be able to find some of the classic comics in any good comic book shop. Over here, we have Forbidden Planet, which also has a tonne of awesome figures.

The classic series is tricky, just about 45% of Troughtons era are missing and probably won't be found again. Either way, you should definitely torrent some stories. The format's different. Usually each story is about 4-6 episodes long, in the later ones, anyway.

It's different, and similar at the same time. There's no need to watch them in order, though. Especially considering a lot are missing.

Start with the modern ones, either the series when it first came back with Eccleston or Tennant's first series.

I think "Christopher Eccleston should have got another series" is pretty much the only opinion I hold on Doctor Who.

Because that might be what's easily available to him.

I prefer the Eccleston series to the first Tennant series. The series introduces a few recurring characters too, but you'll pick up the idea pretty quickly if you start with Tennant. Both are good places to start, regardless of quality.

Basically don't start halfway through a Doctor, or with Matt Smith.

Jbot lives in the states, so if he has Netflix somehow some way he has series 1-6 readily available for instant streaming. If not, most of the instant stream websites that can be accessed in the US have series 1-current, including all of the specials.

I don't see a scenario where it would be more difficult for him to start with Eccleston unless he started with Eccleston and realized he just flat out did not enjoy Eccleston.

My point is that starting with either would be fine.

There's no reason that it would be harder to start with Eccleston. I meant that if, for example, his friend has a heap of episodes starting with Tennant he wouldn't have to lose any sleep about missing the first new season.

I'd say start with Eccleston, since that's where the reboot began, and you can feel pretty much how the British public did at the time - not knowing quite what to expect.

He didn't want to do another one, he said he only wanted to get the series up on it's feet again, and after that he pretty much turned his back on the programme, which is fair enough, he didn't agree with the politics with the show. Or something.

Shame though, he's a good actor, still my favourite of all then new ones. IMO the first season was best. Would have loved to see him do Season 2 as well.

I think series 2 was the best, but I agree, he's a really underrated Doctor.

i agree that it would have been cool to have Eccleston continue as the Doctor because that was the last time i enjoyed the series, but at the same time holy shit am i glad he didn't. he could see what was fucking coming. he's a great actor with many unique traits that could be utilised well and have been, but shitty-arse goddamn writing is shitty-arse goddamn writing.

I too am British so I watch Doctor Who otherwise I get the ol' chopping block.

Anywho, I watch Doctor Who for much of the same reasons already mentioned. I want to see if it manages to pull itself back out of the ditch it's dug, this coupled witht he fact I grew up with it is what keeps me watching.

My first memories of watching Doctor Who was the first episode of the reboot back in March 2005. My family had gone on holiday to a static-caravan/chalet park in Skegness at the same time, The episode aired whilst we were over there and though I could barely tell what was going on due to the scart lead making the TV black and white and the signal constantly cutting out, (Gotta love those old analog TV's) it was the start of a kind of family tradition where every Saturday is was on my mum, my brothers and I would gather round and watch it.

But yes, the writers should be hung for all the shit they pull.
