Have you noticed how both Burton and Depp do great work these days when they are separated from each other?

I read an article on Cracked that had a few theories about this. The author postured that the reason all the recent Burton/Depp/Carter collaborations are always the same is because they are the worst kind of creative team. A good team has different strengths and contrasting ideas on how the material should be handled. There has to be some disagreement and brainstorming so that the ideas can be distilled to a palatable form. In the case of Burton/Depp/Carter, they're pretty much always in agreement, and all the ass-patting ensures that the ideas on the table never gel.
Burton: Okay, Johnny. In this movie, you play a pale weirdo with black hair.
Depp: Brilliant! Will I be British too?
Burton: But of course!
Depp: Awwwww yeah!
Carter: Hey, can I be in it too?
Burton: Sure, you can be the deuteragonist.
Carter: Thanks, dear. I'll give you a hummer tonight as thanks.
Burton: Bawlin'.
It only makes sense that when they're not enabling each other, they end up making something far fresher. All three of them are competent artists, but when they work together, the project is pretty much doomed.
