Fanart Competition 2011: The Results!

Take a chill-pill CrissCross; they're here!

Ladies and Gentlemen, at a record-breaking speed, the results are in! Ballots have been checked! Boxes have been ticked! Beans have been counted! And I am very disappointed that no one drew an industrial picture, but never mind!

Thanks to the three entrants,
CrissCross
MeechMunchie
Scrabtrapman

And an equally massive thanks to the three self-sacrificing and generally wonderful judges,
Dripik
Enchilado
And the mysterious third judge who Did Not Wish To Be Named (but not the same as the judge of the fanfiction competition who Did Not Wish To Be Named). To save time, we'll call this judge... Blofeld.

As I say, the results are in, so I will no longer waste your time. Each submission was marked out of 150 points, so in reverse order...

In third place, with 72 points was...

I Am Oddworld, by Scrabtrapman!

In second place, with 78 points was...

Artwork9 by CrissCross!

So our winner, with a fairly hefty 110 points, was...

Moonlight, by MeechMunchie!
(Which is also the only one too large to attach to this thread, so is liable to have vanished by this time next year, but never mind!)

Well done MeechMunchie, you master-artiste, you (it's extra-artistic with that 'e' on the end).

To follow is a breakdown of the scores, and any comments the judges felt the desire to leave you.
(Note the order of points: total (Dripik/Enchilado/Blofeld))

I Am Oddworld, by Scrabtrapman!
Quality of Art: 10 (3/6/1)
Depiction: 18 (2/9/7)
Oddness: 10 (4/2/4)
Originality: 22 (3/9/10)
Use of Theme: 12 (3/5/4)
Total: 72 (15/31/26)

:
A rather desperate entry, I'd guess. I'd hardly call this fan art, originality goes south with the hand sign being so over-and-overused, and the use of the theme is just vaguely there with the Mudokon hand on a white surface (I guess that'd be the moon).
:
This is awesome. This is really awesome. But though it's odd, it's not Oddworld odd. If that makes sense.
:
I like the new idea of doing a photo but that is a bad photo. Also your face isn't shaped like a mudokons. Get a new face! Cus it's ruining your oddness! Dont know what to give you for use of theme, it doesn't really seem to apply, so I'll give you half -1.

Artwork9 by CrissCross!
Quality of Art: 15 (7/3/5)
Depiction:17 (8/2/7)
Oddness: 19 (8/3/8)
Originality: 13 (6/2/5)
Use of Theme: 14 (8/4/2)
Total: 78 (37/14/27)

:
A decent drawing - close to the line-art sort of stuff I usually do, except that here we even have shading (I'm terrible with that), so the attempt has to be noted. The poses of the Scrabs turned out cool, rather authentic and fitting to their usual behaviour. There is room for improvement still, like adding a bit of detail to the cliffs and perhaps some craters to the moon.
:
Sorry, but it's very obvious that the scrabs at least are copied directly from official OWI art, and not even very well.
:
Nice scrabs apart from the closest one which looks mutated (and lost you points). The mix between detailed scrabs and simple scenery i thought was good but the moon isn't really doing anything. At least it should put the scrabs half in shadow: taking some more time to work out how to use moonlight in the picture would have helped.

Moonlight, by MeechMunchie!
Quality of Art: 23 (9/7/7)
Depiction: 23 (8/7/8)
Oddness: 24 (9/6/9)
Originality: 18 (8/4/6)
Use of Theme: 22 (8/6/8)
Total: 110

:
Liked this one. The colours themselves made it unique for me, I liked the Paramite sort of blending in with its surroundings by being of the same colour. There were also a lot of things that I didn't notice at first glance, but only after a second good look, like the Mudokon skeleton. A proper entry, good job.
:
I really like this image, but my rating for each aspect added up into something pretty low. Oh well, it's not a bad a score as Artwork 9's. The only thing I don't like is that the paramite doesn't stand out enough.
:
You used the moon well, creating light and dark and shadow. And I think the paramite is very good and showing the two environments paramites are found in in the first games (forest and cave) was a nice touch. Its a good picture and I can feel im in it, part of it.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

And that, my friends, is that! Thanks again to the entrants and the judges, and generally to people who nagged and encouraged wherever necessary. Your co-operation is appreciated!

That is more or less that. The 2011 fanfiction competition will happen some time around August.

Stay Odd, everyone!

Congratulations to you three who entered! I'm curious to know.. if I could have been arsed to give it a go, I was planning on using the other meaning of moonlight, which is 'to moonlight' (to have a night-time job, or something like that)... I was gonna do Abe earning some cash dancing in drag for the glukkons in a burlesque house. Would this have been a valid entry? x)

Yes, though it would have been up to the individual judges to decide what marks to give you for 'use-of-theme' (and whether or not they understood your meaning). I like the clever uses of theme, though last year one of the entrants used a complex use of the theme and scored low because of it, so he wasn't too chuffed.

Thanks! I iz winner!

Basically, my idea was that we don't know that much about Paramites. They could have their own culture, their own legends, their own heroes. So I drew a big muscly Paramite with the Paramite symbol tattooed on its back, leading the swarm on some mysterious migration. He revels in the moment. After all, this may be the only time they ever see the sky.

Shame we didn't get a couple more entries though. Now to do a Scrab (Sunlight) and a Meech (Twilight) one!

I was planning on using a meech actually. It was a meech in a dead forest at night, skreeching at the moon.
I think next time we have a competition, we should do like, a duel between two creatures or something. That would be fun.

I didn't and still can't see a tattoo on his back or any other paramites... it just looks like a paramite screeching in a cave to me...

See your optician. The tattoos are as clear as I can make them. I even highlighted them in blue to make sure nobody missed them.

The Paramite swarm at the back isn't as obvious as I would've liked, but there's not much I can do about that. It was either make it clear or make it dark, and the second one was more important.

Hmm, looking at it again I can see the shapes of paramites in the background. But I can't see the paramite's back 'cus of how he's standing.

Nice idea, though.

They're all over his body. What did you think the big black stripes were?

Oh yeah. i assumed they were dark shadows before, but I see what you mean now. That's cool; if you did do one for scrabs it would be interesting to see.

Personally, I liked "I Am Oddworld" for its originality. The other 2 winners were well-drawn. Cheers!
