:

for starters, sr2 looks even more wank in HD
No no no, don't start that again. You tell me why it looked ugly. You define ugly. Because too me, it looks like a fucking video game. GTA IV and RDR looked gross because of the unnaturally natural character animation (they need to stop putting so much damn work into that) and general level of detail on things. Everything looked like it had a layer of something on it. Some horrible alien substance.

I won't pretend Saints Row 2 has better graphics than GTA IV, but it's still a brighter, cleaner looking game.

:
(and how sad do you have to be to boast about being able to afford a HDTV? who cant afford one these days?
SOMEBODY didn't reload the thread before posting.

:
i said nothing of the controls making the game "difficult",
Then why is it a problem? Why bring it up if it didn't inhibit the gameplay itself? Is it because widdle-biddy baby can't constwuct an awgument?

:
its actually too easy a game. but the controls couldnt be any further from being tight. it doesnt even feel that there is any weight behind the characters at all, just flailing rag dolls.
Yeah, I won't pretend SR2 can't be a breaze at some points, but I don't play a game with lots of silliness for the sake of having a hard time doing it.
There's a reason for the ragdollitude, and you're legitimately feeble for not realizing this: If the character models weren't programmed to be light, the in game physics (which enabled the A+++ driving in-game) would suck them under cars and make driving through crowds of people no fun at all.

Saints Row 2 was made to be 100% entertaining, and it is. It is a fun-ass game no matter what you do. GTAIV is not. Forcing the player character to go bowling with their fat, shitty cousin is not fun.

There's an actual Ad for GTA IV. In it, you can see Niko:
-and his shitty cousin
-Walking
-Standing around on a roof or garden
-Driving a car
-Jumping over a handrail
-Shooting a red car
-Interacting with a shirtless man
-Being thrown back by an explosion that would kill you in-game
-Driving a helicopter (Oh snap)
-Driving a motorcycle
-Not saying anything nice to anyone

Here's an actual ad for Saints Row 2. I obviously picked this one deliberately, since it really drives my point home.

And you can do all of those things. Many of them wherever you want.

And while Volition is at this very moment making Saints Row 3 and doing just as good a job at not taking themselves eriously and making something enjoyable, Rocktar is pissing away their time on some dumbass adventure game.

Case in point, GTAIV is fun, sure, but not nearly as fun as Saints Row 2, and it never, ever will be.

Additionally, Saints Row 2 takes it more over the line than GTA IV ever has. Death is not discouraged, but you in fact get bonus points for killing lots of gang members at once. For less than most in-game weapons you can turn just about any vehicle into an engine of destruction. Your character isn't as bad as you make them, they're a crazy fucking bastard all their own. They do some cringe-worthy shit, seriously. The only reason these media weenies whine about GTA so much is because they know jack-shit about video games.

Mac has a point.
Overly realistic ≠ fun.
Fun = fun.

Because obviously not having aeroplanes is whole lot more enjoyable than having aeroplanes.

Just one more thing; I always wondered why the heck did GTA IV get a 10 out of 10 in every damn review? It wasn't revolutionary or anything, it was a GTA game. The story is good and long enough to keep you interested, but it sure as hell wasn't anything special. Also, the multiplayer part of IV is pretty shitty really. In free mode, everyone keeps killing you with a helicopter since that's almost the only way to do it in free mode.

Whatever, I still like GTA IV and SR2, I really need to get into SR2 more.

1.Money
2.Free mode is fucking awesome, you played it wrong.

:
as pros. That's because people will always suck the dick that already has the most spit on it.
Don't get me wrong, I liked parts of RDR fine. It just felt like a waste of my time once I completed it. Literally like some waste-of-space Rockstar employee spitting on me then deminding I thank them for it.
Additionally, I thought it was an ugly game, but it took awhile. It was like having someone slowly throwing up poopy pusbarf in my eye over the course of a month, and I didn't realize it was happening until it was a solid crust on my face, sustaining a wet sublayer that leaked down my nose and into my esophagus. Then being hit by a book with a bad ending. That was RDR for me. Your mileage may vary, but it was a huge disappointment for me. I was all over the old west when I was younger, and then this fartsoup gets poured on me and every single person is telling me it was a masterpiece, or that (and seriously, WOW at this) that I don't 'get' it. What is there to get? That everything you do is pointless. That's all. Tell me otherwise, and I'll belittle you. It sucked for me. It was a waste of my time.
I'll agree that once I finished I was bored pretty quickly, but everything before that is amazing. Calling it an ugly game is also incorrect, since technically its still one of the best games out there. Also, it is a masterpiece, and you do not get it.

Nononononononono, you tell me why it's a masterpiece. And why I don;t get it. Otherwise I'm going to start calling you something childish but annoyingly clever. I'd post an example, but I'm tired maaaaan.
And I'm not stating those criticisms as facts; I'm well aware I'm the minority opinion-holder here. I just figure someone might as well be. After all, I'm not the dick OWF needs, I'm the dick OWF deserves.

-THE DICK KNIGHT-

Oh, and way-to-fucking-go replying to my big-ass replies with those dinky paragraphs. I actually feel insulted by not being insulted more. You got no meat on them statements. Can't feed that to my family.

Free mode is GTAIV's shining redeeming quality for me. I have had a lot of random online fun with that. I just forgot.

While I have a somewhat ambivalent view of GTA, Saint's Row and crime-'em-ups in general, I do agree heartily with your comment on modern graphics.

EVERYTHING IS TOO DAMN SHINY

I could launch into a full two-paragraph rant on that, but that's for another thread, another day.

Now you all made me remember how awesome SR2 was. I'm not saying I was completely satisfied, but that was solely the fault of my hardware (played on PC, commence hating now) and not the game itself: whenever I was driving, the whole game became stuttery and all. But it was the elements of gameplay that made it awesome: activities that were insane at first, but turned out to be rather fun (e.g. adventures in the septic tank, or shooting up everything in a certain area), loads of opportunities for having a unique game experience (character creation, customization of various things), the missions themselves, along with the cinematics, which I really liked (the Brotherhood missions were most entertaining, including a certain tattoo-related incident), and the general sandbox feel. I have yet to meet another game where your relatively skinny character goes up to a fire hydrant, tears it out of the concrete and hits people over the head with it, finally throwing it at a gang car and causing a smaller gang war in front of your humble starting safehouse.

Whenever a game starts out with the "You have nothing, you've reached rock bottom. Get out there and take it all back!" concept, I'm pretty likely to get immersed. In SR2, earning more and more money actually had a purpose, pretty much throughout the whole game. In GTA4, this concept kinda cooled down and eventually died in around the second half of the game. Whenever I played the game, I liked the beginning loads more than the part where Niko just gets a series of hit contracts and replies to each pretty much the same way. I feel that, by the end, he pretty much becomes your average GTA protagonist who just goes out there and does whatever he is told (well, in the case of Tommy Vercetti, whatever he felt like doing) without question.

Nonetheless, GTA4 is worth playing through if you like a bit of story with your game. Even though the constant activity phonecalls were a bit annoying, I liked most of the characters. And I got to know KINO through its music stations, so it has extra personal value for me.

GTA IV a masterpiece; I snorted coffee over my keyboard.

Play San Andreas or Vice city. I wouldn't call them masterpieces but they are each a tenfold better than GTA IV; even with shitty graphics.

I was referring to Red Dead when I made that statement, but I think GTA4 is also well deserving of a lot of the praise it gets.

I preferred Saints Row's ability to create your own character, as well as finally making him talk proper in the second.

I already said that GTA never did it for me, it felt empty, if I played one then the other, they felt the same with a few new colours added in.

GTA IV was just dull, despite the physics engine which was the only aspect I liked, still...nah. A bit crap.

Anyway, yuss. Mac raises good points, but he forgot to mention Rim Jobs.

I need a Rim Job.

I should think that a game where you are rewarded for doing good and punished for harming others would be much more moral. Can anyone think of a game such as that?

well RDR rewarded good deeds and punished bad, fallout 3 also did something similar (there were pros and cons to being good and bad) also black and white was heavily based on being either good or bad

I remember such a sandbox game in years past, it's title is foggy but it came out around GTA3's release, was based in London...

Garr, it was okay. I liked driving Peugeots and Citroens.

Fuck, I cannot spell them thar cars.

Had to search that on Google to confirm, and yes. That was it, though it must've been the sequel, I played Black Monday which I found more entertaining.

Despite having slightly more realistic graphics with a layout of an existing city and using existing cars, The Getaway just wasn't anywhere near as fun as the PS2 GTAs. It was too easy to die, and cars handled weirdly. Plus it was incredibly linear. There wasn't a HUD. And just what WAS it with pedestrians jumping into the road infront of you, so you ended up getting the police all over your arse?

I did enjoy the atmosphere and seeing two parts of the same story, though.

In a sandbox game if you don't spend most of forever in a vehicle you're not doing it right.

Therefore vehicle handling is pretty much top tier importance.
