A new version of the game is now available called Coal Plant Endurance. The new version features better player deaths and improved graphics/sounds.

Play the game online here:
http://www.strategygamesflash.com/ac...lant-endurance

Download the standalone version with level editor here:
http://www.playgamesinstantly.com/ga...tendurance.zip

Let me know what you think of the new player deaths (also I know they're rather over the top but they work hehe).

The next version of the game should be released next week and should have the Quicksave/Quickload/restart level feature implemented at least.

After that I'm having a 3 week holiday

It's better, I still think the sprites need improvement and the story line is well, non-existant but apart from that, I am glad the game has been improved its 100x better

Thanks for the feedback Scrabtrapman. I have also just released a new version of the game which allows for quicksave/quickload and restarting the level.

Play the new version online:
http://www.modernfungames.com/advent...istmas-edition

Download the standalone version with editor:
http://www.playgamesinstantly.com/ga...masedition.zip

I'll be taking a holiday over the next few weeks so the next version of the game should be released by next year.

The next version of the game will hopefully have more enemies/objects added as well as some minor improvements.

Merry Christmas everyone

Thank god for quicksave then

Also, remember that the guards can't see you in the shadows and they can't hear you while you sneak behind them.

I finished it. Much better than any previous versions, but the start needs to be a bit clearer. I didn't know where I was at first.

Perhaps there could be some sort of effect at the beginning to show the initial player position?

It's a good game only problems I have with it though:
The Hoisting system is unforgiving, you should make it easier to hoist.
And the graphics are pretty poor even for flash, you should find a spriter.

Nice game though.

See that word "inspired"?

And Fred is right: the hoisting is a bit unpredictable. It took me a while to learn to judge when to stop pressing up to ensure that I didn't jump and alert the guards.

I think the graphics are fine for now.

Press F1 to quicksave, F2 to quickload and F3 to restart the level entirely.

Once you have the controls sorted, like the hoisting action, you should take away the quicksave function. Quicksave sort of takes the fun out of a good game becuase it's too easy, and you end up just using it constantly.

It depends, rather than quicksave, checkpoints, like in AO, every few screens.

Well I really liked the addition of quicksaving in Abe's Exodus which is why I wanted to include it in my game as it allows for longer levels to be made.

You can ignore the option to make it harder if you wish.

As for checkpoints I've been thinking of doing something similar which is having the exit doors lead to other levels which would function as a checkpoint of sorts.

I'm not sure how quickly I can add those functions to the editor NovaMan. Crashpunk what would you suggest to improve the controls?
Its not really the controls. It feels like your walking on Ice and the game its self is very hard.

I thought the amount of friction was about right, however I'll adjust it a bit in the next version.

A new version of the Coal Plant game has finally been released.

Play the new version online:
http://www.flashgamesextreme.com/adv...w-year-edition

Download the standalone version with level editor here:
http://www.flashgamesextreme.com/gam...earedition.zip

The improvements:
-Stuff doesn't slide on the floor like ice (except for meat chunks)
-Visual indication of where the player starts out in a level
-Removed hoisting timer, player now needs to press up key again after hoisting to jump
-Exit doors can now lead to other levels

It will be a very long time before we see another version of the game as I need to do massive amounts of promotion for various sites.

That's tonnes better. Something about it just felt good. The hoisting was leaps and bounds ahead of it's predecessor.

I'd say your next advance should be in the graphical department.

EDIT: Although I did like the darker look than the previous versions.

Always good to get such feedback Phylum

As for the darker background I adapted it in 3DS Max from one of my previous scenes which means it'll be easier to vary the background more from version to version.

It's going to be tricky to make significant improvements in graphics as the development time for new versions will be shorter than before as I'll need to make other promotional games.

I've released another version of the game, however due to time constraints I was only able to make a few graphical tweaks and some different levels.

Here's an image of the latest version.

heya, here's a concept character i promised to do for ur game.. He sort of started out a spaceman but He turned into a chinesy sort of martial arts man in a thong x) gotta keep myself motivated some how! http://www.flickr.com/photos/40190959@N06/5409736343

EDIT: More manly .. Someone said the other one was effeminate, so here's the more testosterone-fueled concept

The manlier version looks pretty good. I'm not sure how we're going to coordinate using him in the game though as my time on this game is pretty limited - I need to promote many sites through various means and the Coal Plant game makes up a tiny portion of that promotion.

The easiest thing we could do is use the artwork of the character as a background for the main menu screen (640by480 resolution). I would also credit you in the readme file of the standalone version as being the artist for that artwork if you wish.

EDIT: Covering him up a little bit more couldn't hurt also

nahh, nevermind, lol.. it's exclusively for the character, nothing else. If you weren't interested, I was gonna use him in another game when I get round to making one. And, yeah, I'll cover him up a little more lol.

Well it's the nature of the promotion that I'm doing at the moment, although I will eventually replace the vector graphics with 3D-rendered stuff but not for a while though.
