In one of the Vykkers Lab's levels in Munches Oddysee, there is a room with a whole bunch of cut-up and dissected Elums (Elum?), so it can be inferred that there is, or was, in fact, more than one.

Also, you see a poster for some sort of Elum snack food in Rupture farms, or so i hear.

Probably it is the same Elum. I felt so bad when you had to leave him out there. Poor Elum!

If Elum had some way of travelling faster than the pneumatic tubes, why wouldn't Abe have just ridden him from Scrabania to Paramonia?

They're different Elums.

Because Abe entered the temple, which Elum was geographically prevented from doing, and where from Abe took a direct well back to Monsaic Lines.

There are more than once, thin elum chubs, and the elum bell, probably just alerts nearby elums to Abes presence...although how they travel by platforms so quickly is a mystery.

Yeah; there are more than one, I recall Alf on the old OW site explaining that Elum was actually the species for that character...not its actual name. I recall him mentioning that there was a name for that Elum featured in AO; but I don't remember what it was. :/

The original plan for AO was for Abe to be a free Mudokon, wandering around with his pet elum. If that had happened, it probably would've been the same elum. However, since they decided making Abe a slave would make the story better, I assume it is indeed more than one elum.

It's one Elum. It's a magical immortal creature that is a relative to the earth Pegasus. Any time the Elum died in the game was actually a glitch.

None of the images are nessecarily cannon, though. Lorne could still change his mind about wharever he's decided.

I think the real issue is how does Elum activate -ddcheat to clip through the wall in the beggining of Paramonia.

I always felt the mutilated, headless Elums at the end of Munch's Oddysee were meant to represent Lorne's frustration with the whole development nightmare that OWI went through at the time. Not being able to implement things they wanted in Munch's Oddysee or even release a finished product must have been very upsetting to him.

Anyway that's what I got out of it.

EDIT: It is very obvious Elum is the species, not the name of that particular creature, and yes it is also obvious that there are more than one.

I admit, I quite like that notion. As unfortunate as it could be.
I suppose its Lorne-like to go to all that effort just to make a point.. even if he couldn't have other things in the game.

Why else would they go to the trouble of creating a 3d model of an Elum body just to show it for a minute at the end of the game with no real relevance to what was going on with the story UNLESS they had been planning to have Elum as a character you could ride in the game? It seemed to me that they developed the model but didn't get the time to incorporate the gameplay mechanics/levels/animations for it. There are concept art images for Munch's Oddysee showing Mudokons on Elums....

I know the Vykkers liked to experiment on animals, and maybe I'm reading too much into this, but something tells me this was them attempting to salvage what little work they completed with the Elum while at the same time showing their frustration with it all.

The concept images you're referring to were from Hand of Odd.

What you're suggesting is possible, but I doubt it. If they hadn't modelled the disembowelled Elums, they would have had to have modelled something else instead, so it's not that much extra effort to include a little easter egg for the more observant fans.

NO, they're not from Hand of Odd. Munch's Oddysee - have a look for yourself:

http://oddworldlibrary.net/archives/...=CAMO0013.jpg2

They really didn't have to render ANYTHING for that area, it was right next to the auction and seemed out of place. I would've seemed more relevant to the story to show the Vykkers' experiments/dissections when you first play as Munch escaping from their labs....

Anyway it's just a theory and nothing more.

NOTE: There is a second Elum in the distance in this picture as well.
