But Oddworld occurs on two planes or more because you can see what goes on in the back round and sometimes play in the background (thus '2.5D')

I don't know how the switching between depths is implemented or what it's used for (video?), but having small interactions with depth does not make something not 2.5D. 2.5D games can have the path twist, split and cross in the depth axis. The important point is that the gameplay is 2D.

If AO and AE used 3D environments, they would be 2.5D despite the dual depths.

How about we just call Little Big Planet 'single plane 3D' and Abe's Oddysee 'dual plane 2D'?

Except that LBP occurs on three planes.

'Triple plane 3D', then.

It's either 3d or Triple Plane 2d.

Hey, I'm just trying to help, I've never even played LBP. It's up to you what you call it.

Isn't 2.5D simple 3D models in used in a 2D gameplay? Like the new Donkey Kong Country:

The best example I can think of of 2.5D in gaming is Pandemonium (and of course it's sequel). Try it. The environment is completely 3D, yet at no point is any depth involved (well, I think there's a couple of boss battles where it is, but that's it). You can have an endless looping circle, the path can spiral around, but you still can only move left, right, up and down - not back or forwards.

Bob Came In Pieces is another good 2.5D game.

It just occurred to me that all our definitions of 2D, 2.5D and 3D are going to be thrown out the window once 3D TVs and gaming become common. We're gonna have to come up with a whole new set of words to describe a game set in 3D but portrayed on a 2D screen and a game that is displayed on a 3D screen with 3D graphics but 2D gameplay. Ugh.

EDIT: And then we'll have to come up with new words once SCIENCE invents proper 360° 3D holographic displays to supersede the currently new 'Kinda looks 3D thanks to stereoscopic effect' technology.

Gaming on a 3D TV is not going to take off for at least another decade. Trust me on that. The technology is still way to sucky for it to be any fun for longer than 2 minutes.

Agreed with Havoc, it's not even that 3D, I went to a prototype festival in Berlin in February and the 3D television was a prime thing, tbh it's nowhere near as good as 3D cinema.
