i heard of some farmer marrying one of his prize-winning heifers, once. not far from were i worked. and for some reason, that seems more logical than marrying a pillow with a fictional characters face on it.

Well I'm not much of an anime guy, I like depressing English cartoons moar, but Japan is also a rainy country and has a lot of depressing stuff too like 5 centimeters per second which is a GREAT movie!
Also I used to watch Gundam and DBZ when they were on after school as a kid and even bought a bunch of Gundam models, which I STILL think were kick ass ;P

I too like depressing cartoons and movies. Especially if the main charecter dies or evil wins in the end etc. Death Note was good in it's idea, but the series got a little sidetracked when L died. Then it became quite boring.

There is this great anime studio, Studio 4°C , which still produces far outstanding animes and don't give a shit about the main stream.

http://www.studio4c.co.jp/

Especially Mind Game totally blew my mind.

and here's one older short film by Koji Morimoto

Noiseman Sound Insect - but you have to watch carefully to get the whole plot, cause you'll get bombed by the images and sounds.

It's fucking hilarious.

STUDIO4°C is a Japanese animation studio founded by Eiko Tanaka in 1986. The name comes from the temperature at which water is densest. It should not be mistaken with Studio 4C which is a common nickname given to the team of assistants of the manga artist Masakazu Katsura.
STUDIO4°C represents STUDIO4°C’s creative manifesto to "create only works that are dense with substance and extreme quality."

STUDIO4°C has produced many feature films which titles include; MEMORIES, SPRIGGAN and Princess Arete. In 2003 through a joint production with Warner Bros., STUDIO4°C created the revolutionary The Animatrix, of which 5 segments were created in-house. Having successfully showcased the quality of Japanese animation and its creators to the world ,the studio went on to create the multi award winning avant-garde production MIND GAME, an intensely ambitious and crazily innovative feature film which was released in the summer of 2004. STUDIO4°C's next film TEKKON KINKREET, was earned many awards from film festivals. It won six awards, including Best Animated Film at the Fantasia 2007, Lancia Platinum Grand Prize at the Future Film Festival, Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year. It was also submitted for 2007 Oscar consideration in Animated Feature Film category of Academy Award in USA.

For STUDIO4°C, leading the creation scene in Japan, The anthology film Genius Party ( '07- '08 12 Directors) is a example of materializing the policy it proclaimed when it was established. In 2008, Batman's side story Gotham Knight was loved by all over the world, the unconventional and ambitious OVA Detroit Metal City was released in praise. The following year, First Squad: The Moment of Truth was awarded at the Moscow international Film Festival. In February 2010, Halo Legends [Origins Part1 & Part2], [The Babysitter] has become the greatest smash hit for all the game fan of the world.
Sounds like you

I'd like to suggest to any anime fans here that they try a fairly famous all ages visual novel called Higurashi No Naku Kori Ni (When the Cicades cry). It's very easy to buy a copy and direct download it from the internet (It's licensed in the west and has been fully translated etc etc), there's a useful wikia devoted to fanmade patches to iron out the rougher bits of the translation (Changes the music and sprites to be far more eye/ear pleasing) and it's really really fun to watch and playthrough.

Gonna try it after I've watched cowboy bebop first. My silly rule to watch only 1 series at a time. Except the ones that are still made every week..

Oh I hear the anime adaption is fairly good (Although a bit too gory for my tastes) but I was talking more about the visual novel, as I said it's the only non eroge/h-game that's been officially licensed and translated into English which makes it a pretty unique experience.

I'm not toofond of reading manga on the net. Never have been.. Don't know why but somehow it doesn't have the same feeling as watching it from the tube.
