Question Is world peace actually possible?

People have always strived for world peace, be it through speeches, books, or other forms of broadcasting one's opinion. However, is there a posibility for there to be world peace in say 100 years time? Do you think there really be a time for there to be universal agreement between one another about issues we care about and may even fight for?

Through our talks about race, religion, and sexuality, I feel that the answer is no. Wars, scuffles, and other conflicts are generally caused by tension between opposing groups about particular subjects including resources, land, riches, and ideologies. There will always be at least someone who has that desire to do something that would ruffle the feathers of another in the wrong way, and may cause a chain reaction that could affect entire segments of society in a negative way. Everyone desires peace on our little blue orb, but because of our diverse we are as human beings, it does not seem like a plausible reality, at least for the living anyway.

I think World Peace could be possible, but not in the 'two warring nations shaking hands' kind of way.

World Peace in the sense of demilitarization is very possible, but not probable. There are two main causes of war; conflicting dogma and non-renewable resources. In a nutshell, certain beliefs and religions would have to be snuffed out completely to end all conflict, as there are several religions that preach violent retaliation and violence in general. And even then, the religions that preach love and peace could still be worshiped by literalists or those with too much piety and turned into a scapegoat to be judgemental and racist. On the religious front, there will always be differences, and it would take a long fuckin' time to weed the counterproductive religions out of the picture. And even then, that's a completely subjective argument and to act upon it would create even more conflict.

As for resources, we have to bear in mind that all countries are at different stages of technological development and several countries have different governing systems. This is a great deterrent to being equal in resources, which is the only possible way to keep conflicts from breaking out over who has what.

World peace may be possible, but whenever i here the "Can't we all just get along" line i cringe. The answer, "No". What Kind of idiot looks at the human race and then says "Can't we all just get along"?? Conflict will always exist, but whether or not that conflict will take the form of open warfare ... we can never be sure.

EDIT: Not for a while in any case.

To put things in perspective, I typed 'World Peace' into Youtube and instead got several hits for Call of Duty: World at War.

It's possible, just unliklely.

Probably not in a hundred years, but I think we'll get there as long as we don't nuke ourselves into oblivion or genuinely screw up the planet.

Can't wait to hear what Havoc has to say.

The only way we can get world peace is with a one-world government run as a semi-benevolent dictatorship.

In other words, it's never going to happen.

I don't think world peace can be achieved in 100 years.

There's just too many things in the way of world peace: recources, land, belief, greed ect, and humanity now being a race surviving almost soley on technology we would have to either lose technology (which would possibly lower the population) or use technology to solve these problems.

I don't see either of these happening anytime soon though.

Or I could just be blabbering sweet ignorant nothings.

World Peace is a pipe dream concocted by hippies who try to save the world in their own way by refusing to work, never showering, and playing the sitar.

World Peace is a laughable concept, as it goes against human nature. As I've said, unless we're all under one united government and all share the same/similar dogma there will never be a worldwide accord.

This whole thing with world peace is, as some of you have stated, a big pile of lies. We can't with the way the world is at the moment anyhow, and probrably will stay for who-knows-how-long.

There are ways we can avoid war with other nations though. Not conflict altogethor, but war we can avoid... eventually.

It depends on how you define world peace.

But at least in this generation we have the ability to understand it as a concept. If you went back any further than 50 years, the population wouldn't even have considered it as a possible future option, let alone something that was likely. People would think you were either joking or crazy if you mentioned World Peace.

I agree with Nate. Lethargy isn't the issue here, we all care about the state of the world, and any reasonably educated individual will tell you changes need to be made, problems need to be addressed.
The issue is that the methods we have are not going to sway those running the globe. No matter how many of us show up to protests, there's so much going on that the public will never know or understand that comes into play in matters like this. Too grandiose and complicated. Dismissing it as "lethargy" is just as lethargic.
