Happy Tomorrow When The War Began

The books are finally getting turned into a movie! Yes dreams do happen, I've been on the TWTWB forums for a few years hanging out for info, and finally it's all happening! (more than what i can say for this one)
As for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, the plot is basically about Australia getting invaded. The story is about how 7 teenagers go into 'Hell' (their hideout) for a camping trip and when they come back something very strange is going on. Eventually it comes to the point where they're doing guerilla warfare.
The books were written By John Marsden, and they're so popular over here they're being taught in schools. (they aren't just about war, they're about how people cope with it). I'd compare it to Red Dawn, but this totally blows Red Dawn out of the water.

Thanks. I often like to know how a movie ends before I've watched it.

wow that was quick, have to wait ages on the other forum.
Happy now? now no one knows (unless you've read it), but it's pretty damn obvious it would happen at some point. wars have a bit of a habbit of doing that to people.

TWTWB is awesome; it was the only book I ever read for school that I actually enjoyed. The series fell off the rails after book 3 or 4 though.

And I think the movies will be shite. The whole point of the books was that it was Ellie writing them herself, with her own internal monologue giving moral voice to the story.

Kiling people. i changed the post, cause i wouldn't want to spoil it for anyone. (i didn't name names, though)
I love the series, it won't be the same as the books, but then we'll get to see all those action bits. They're making 3 i think. Filming in September. They have an Ellie actor already.

In addition to my last post, one of the strengths of the books was that it didn't glamorise the kids' actions. They killed people, blew up ports with massive bombs, attacked their enemy's bases, destroyed bridges, etc but they were incredibly conflicted about what they'd done and the lives they'd taken. Can you see that coming across in a movie?

No, it's going to become an action film with explosions happening in slow motion and the audience cheering as the gooks get killed.

Oh, spoilers by the way.

Yeah! Fucking gooks!
I'll judge the movies by what people say about them when they come out. It would be neat if they actually did it right but I'm not holding my breath.

Those books pissed me off to no end with their vagueness. I wanted to know who the fuck they were fighting, I don't give a shit if they're written that way on purpose.

Which is it? Anonyman? Me? You can't have both.

Never heard of them either. I was stuck reading bullshit stories like To Kill a Mockingbird and Lord of the Flies. I kid. I actually love those books.

Oh, spoilers by the way.
There are ways around that, if Marsden is keeping an eye on the procedings, perhaps he can pursuade the direction of the film, so that it keeps focus on how Ellie and her friends deal with the consequences of their actions. I just hope the director knows what he is doing.

How many novel-to-film adaptations have you seen where a) the author retains any level of control and b) the film retains the true spirit of the book?

Don't get your hopes up.

I dunno. Depends how much they dumb it down.

The books themselves would not appeal to the Twilight crowd, due to the existence of complex characters, moral quandaries and much that is implied but not spelled out in minutely idiotic detail.
