How much do looks matter to you?

Was just wondering about this one day. How much do looks matter to you in order to fal in love and maintain it?
How hard would you work to get together with a hot person? Would you only want them in bed or share your life with them?
Also do you think that being hot is actually a disadvantage when it comes to finding a mate to settle down with?


Peronally I dont think looks matter much to me. Unless someone looks extremely disgusting and unappealing, i can manage to look beyond that.
Looks are very much tied to the personality I think. People I like usually look pretty in my eyes, and people who show an ugly personality usually turn out to look very ugly. I think it's a matter of perception.
Some guys see a hot girl and lie thorugh their teeth to get in her pants, while other fall in love with a hot girl.

So whats your story?

looks matter very little to me. i like someone with quirks and a good character, but i'll tell you what does turn me off a woman; acting 'dumb' and being two-faced. also disloyalty, obviously. if she actually IS not all that bright though, it doesnt bother me.

i've never actually been in 'love' ever, even with my ex. i just got used to her. sounds a bit callous but i am in no means nasty.

and if you are attractive by other people's standards, i think that could be a magnet for shallow people, which could be a drawback if you wanted a successfull relationship.

Let's remember that 'good looking' is going to change from one person to another. It's almost too obvious to mention really but something to keep in mind.

Looks are fantastic, but lets look at this from a 'natural' and even evolutionary point of view. Part of physical attraction stems from "good looks" as choosing a 'good looking,' healthy, and even young mate is important for ensuring perpetuation of a species; it seems to me only reasonable for anyone to be 'attracted' to these things.

I think it depends on what you're looking for in a mate, and that can vary extremely especially as a self-aware, independent thinking, and sometimes-sophisticated species.

Someone who meets my 'physical tastes' won't necessarily appeal to me emotionally or with any depth beyond their body, which is a .... um, 'psychological' turnoff I guess.

Looks are always an important thing to me, I mean if Im not attracted to them Im not attracted to them. Its also personality for me aswell; if someone has a personality that I admire then that person becomes more attractive to me. Id say its slightly more personality for me, then looks. Also the eyes, beautiful eyes always get me.

Interstingly I recently did a similar subject in psychology. I found that I rated looks around 6th or 7th (cant remember) in a list of 13 characteristics, while most males I knew rated it 4th or 5th.

Pysical appearance, be it facial expression, poise, hairstyle, body type or clothing related plays a huge roll in initial attraction. The overall visual presentation of a person ("hot" or "not", it doesn't matter) matters a lot in developing relationships. Yada yada yada.

But of course, personality always reigns supreme in how far those relationships go.

Yes. This makes me think of something and it kind of follows on after my previous comment about 'psychological' attraction.

I've been attracted to people, but feel nothing for them beyond a physical attraction. While I currently have a good friend with whom I feel is very 'special' to me... and although I am not really attracted to him physically I love to hang out with him; we have great conversations, similar interests, and I'm the only person he 'opens up to' for private matters of his.

Is it love? I don't know. He's just a really special friend that I adore and share a lot with... and one of the VERY few people I could actually hypothetically stand to live with. I've known him for 11 years now.

Thought that was worth sharing as its relevant to the question of attraction v. love.... but in my own experience based strongly yet not solely on this friend of mine, that certain 'flutter' exists for more than physical attraction.
