Oddworld Let's talk about Stranger's Wrath

I just completed it today! Wooties.

I was quite surprised to discover that Sekto was controlling the Olden Steef. Those Gloktogi things are pretty evil as well. At one point during the fight, I got cornered by two of them and they spammed that spinny move and killed me!

Less cutscenes than AE, but I think a lot of them are probably more memorable and have a bigger impact.

The weirdest thing for me was going from two legged Stranger to a four legged Steef... not only did it change a lot of the gameplay but a lot of the levels were changed as well turning into an industrial style of building (which I prefer to the native buildings).

So what were your opinions of the game when you first finished it?

I personally enjoyed the game since the beginning. I'd say Stranger's Wrath is indeed a great Oddworld game (opinion). The gameplay, while a bit simple and common, is still creative (LIVE ammo). The Wolvarks and Oktigi were my most fav creatures of Oddworld aswell. So badass they were.

Thanks for a major spoiler! I'll now have to throw my (unfinished) game into the bin since you wrecked it for me. Can you delete it from your post or at least spoiler tag it.

When I completed I couldnt believe how short it was. I agree with the shorter FMVs. Getting a chance to see the FMVs is pretty cool but not enough unlocked content >_<.

Also I was disappointed that there was no alternative endings as I was expecting it. Previous oddworld had it O_o. So it was fun to play but it is game that you won't play more than once in one sitting.

Another thing collecting moolah was pointless too. I remember on my first gameplay I would beat up every clakker for moolah. They can only be hit 3 times before they are skint. I had more than enough for the...

!spoiler! operation. Then baging turned to live ammo. I was like noooo. I could have the operation and Doc said not enough.
!spoiler!

The game has been out for at least 4 years... those elements aren't considered as spoilers anymore around here.

Plus you should have guessed this thread would contain spoilers for you only by a quick look at the title.

Yeah it was a shame that money suddenly became useless. I was expecting a Grubb town somewhere but I guess I was wrong.

Also it's a shame that each town didn't have it's own Jail as well. That Live Ammo feature made sure that the game was finishable, but seems completely random. Oh well, that's oddworld for you.

The only other thing is that there aren't any Mudokons or Sligs, or even any reference to them. The Doc didn't have an intern either

But still, excellent game, a brilliant example of how an FPS can be done right. Most games only have one ending anyway, so I wasn't really too miffed by this. It sucks in AO/AE/MO when you get the bad ending and have to complete the whole game all over again

Great boss fights as well, I especially liked the Gloktogi one, it was cool hiding behind bookcases etc.

Wait is Fatty Mcboomboom the one who has the energy sheild around him? The energy sheild guy is the one I'm stuck on.

There are two bosses with energy shields. The one you mention is about half way into the game, you need to zap those panels nearby and then pound him with thudslugs or wasps. Remember to hide behind the fences to avoid the rocket attacks.

I suspect you're talking about Packrat Palooka. I struggled with him just last week.

What I found was that the only way to defeat him was to get to him quickly and keep him away from the doors. I put fuzzles in front of the doorways, shot the electro-panels and the moment he stepped towards the computer, shot a boombat behind him to knock on him off the platform and on to the ground. Now, you can't depend on the fuzzles to keep him occupied; they'll only attack him for a few seconds and then he'll run in to the doorway. You have to run forwards and get between him and the door and shoot him with thudslugs and zappflies. Try to keep him stuck in a corner and not towards the centre of the arena. Thudslugs are the important thing here; they'll knock him on the ground for long enough for them to reload (as long as you have bought the reloader). And you need to keep him on to the ground because otherwise he'll run away and shoot you. You can only take two or three shots before you're killed so act fast.

If you follow this and are lucky, you can bag him alive without letting him run back on to the platform.

My favourite two pieces of FPS game design in SW are the early water facility boss and then the Wolvark Docks fight (to get to the boat).
Both are large open environments with various possible strategies. I particularly like coming out of the Wolvark Docks and being able to look down upon the entire environment from up high before entering the boat cave.

I think the Grubb city siege was done really well. It felt like a mini version of GTA

I forgot, what the place was called. But I thought it was awesome when you pull up on that beach, (D-day style) with that giant ship over head. Very interesting, and totally foreign to most OW games, to go in shooting.

I think I had a Vash complex though (if you recognize my avatar you'll know what I mean). I never wanted to kill anyone.

Yeah my bad, It's Packrat Palooka. Not Mcboomboom.

It's not bagging him I have a problem with. It's the bloody rockets. With cheats I got him easy.

Well, if you keep him down with the thudslugs, the rockets aren't a problem.

Attack on "Last Legs"

Cool, for Packrat Palooka I never thought of using Fuzzles at the doors. I used boom bats and thud slugs. Boom bat the doors and constant thudding. I remember to use this next time.

I want to know if there is anyway you can kill the clakkers. They are starting to annoy me. hehe

In Buzzarton, once the sewer is open, you can push Clakkerz down there. It takes some time, but you can use Chippunkz to speed up the process. Clakkerz run towards them just like Outlaws do. If you’ve already spoken to Scuz, then you can scare the Clakkerz with violence and they’ll run into his hideout… where they get somewhat eaten.

Poor clakkers lol. Yeah, Last Legs is possibly one of the highlights of this game. It would be interesting to have more city sieges.

Can you imagine a Slig based FPS Call of Duty style game? That would be pretty awesome. Or maybe even a SWAT style game, like Rainbow Six

On the subject of Packrat Palooka, I found him difficult to bag alive firstly because I didn't want to risk killing him and had a look at a walkthrough (which had the same strategy Nate posted), however, after playing through the game again I found that it's much easier to just pound into him with whatever hurts him (let him stay up on his 'stage', doesn't matter) and by the time he's on just less than a quarter health, he will jump off and come after you himself, and that's basically when you hit him with the zappflies and thudslugs, then bounty him. Works pretty well for me.

And about a Slig based FPS... In my opinion it'd work better as a faster paced Gears of War third person style game. I think the clunking of your robotic legs would be better felt in that style.

Oh yeah, I could just imagine that steady-cam effect. When I think of other good third-person games, I think of;
-Dynasty Warriors (could lead to some interesting Slig VS Slig conflicts)
-Metal Gear Solid (could lead to some interesting industrial infiltrations, possibly by a rogue outlaw Slig?)
-Trapt (It would be interesting to lure a bunch of Sligs/Big Bros and then flick a switch to open a trap-door or open the gate to a Scrab kennel)
- Monster Hunter (I could definately imagine a rogue hunter style character going around the landscape and hunting creatures like Scrab Herds etc)
- Battalion Wars (Like Gears of War this would depend on some good teamwork AI that could change into different formations etc)
