Rats as Slogs

I like it to watch TV at a later time, because there comes the best newscasts.
And i know a TV magazine who called explosive, and there comes interesting newscasts.
But this time i saw anything about Lab rats.
And the guys have made animal experiments.
I saw a rat ... she looks like a Slog! *cries*
This is cruelty to animals... what did they done with the poor rats that these animals so to suffer???
it's terrifying it's sick...!!!
...maybe they are Slogfans... just a joke,

what can we do that this will to close???

I agree with you, Alector. I personally believe that using animals just for testing is wrong. Animals are meant to be free, not to have experiments done on them that may make them suffer and die. How would humans like it if another creature came along and did that to them? I know I sure wouldn't like my life to be that way. I also feel that the testing of cosmetics and making fur coats out of animals is wrong too. I'm sorry, but that's just the way I feel.

If the animal has no self awareness then it is not that bad. I mean animals are like rats and mice they would just live off instinct and have a very short and low grade memory so they realy would not care to much about whats happenning to them...

...But If a animal is abussed for no reason or it has a valuable place in the eco system or it is meanningful to someone then it is not right that anything against it should happen...

... But in this case it was probly for medical reasurch... and thats whats saves peoples lives... and that is more inportent then a hundred slog looking rats.

It's really sad, but these things happen. It looks as though Munch's Oddysee will explore this issue in September.

On one hand, some people say we need animal testing for medical purposes. But what about the animals? It's in their best interests to stay alive, and anything with a complex nervous system can feel pain. Are we permitted to do as we wish with animals simply because we are more advanced than them? Simply because we can?

It doesn't seem fair to me. Animals are living beings as much as humans. They may be a little simpler, but they are no less of an organism with a nervous system than we.

A long, long time ago (Befor Oddworld was thought up) in a land not so far away... There was a group of people called the Nazis and anuther group called the Jews. The Nazis had been bad and they conducted experiments on the jews for medical and chemical wepons research which was a big bobo. After a big bad war the Nazis where put to bed and all there findings from playing around with the Jews was given to world to use.
The world said "This is realy good infomation and it will save many lives... But we can't keep doing these things to the Jews... There HAS to be some other way...? (Great last words)".
And so it was done... They got a hole bunch of mice and rats and bread them beond the amounts they would in the wild and kept them safe from cats with out bells. In return for this niceness to non selfaware rodents some of them sometimes get a little bit exprimented on to save and better human lives...
... And they all lived happly ever after...
... Untill the hippyies came along and started sugesting that rats and mice have fellings and they should be free in the wild, where in their great numbers would reek huge amounts of envirmental distruction and this would also mean that the research would have stop because we would have no other means of testing exept for more advanced creatures like dogs... primates... humans... a ethnic background maybe?... Where did we put thoughs Jews again?

The fact is that this is the way things are and the only way you are going to change things is by becoming a scientist and discovering a better way to do these things... You will not manage to change things by force or idears like "Free the animals", you will only damage the balence between the natural and man made worlds.

Oddguy 999, how do you define "self aware"? I know enough about rats and rabbits to know they will react to pain.

The rats and mice are not plucked from their natural habitats to be used for experiments. They are bred with the fate of painful medical/cosmetic testing. These animals would not exist at all if they weren't to be subjected to experimentation, so the environment has no place in this argument. It's unethical to breed living beings who are capable of pain and subject them to torturous experiments.

Why use animals when you can use computer simulations? It's not like medical testing is essential to the human species' survival. Humans already have a population problem, we cut down forests, pollute waterways and even destroy the ozone layer of our planet! Perhaps humans accepting death and disease as a part of life is a more healthy perspective, rather than chopping up innocent organisms to propell our species into a rampage of destruction. Either that or do something like what China is doing to control the population.

I dont know if this is technicly correct but I define selfawareness as a ability to problem solve, to have emotions (moods) and and as a ability to think on both a subconsuse (spelling) and consuse level (dreaming and spontainus actions indercates this). (As far as I know mice, rats and rabbits)

But your right... We should not do realy try to proserve ourselfs through these experiments that may kill animals if we are killing our only planet from our over population... But thats a different issue that can be solved in ways other then letting ourselfs die unesserserally. Like you said we could all adopt the one child pur famly law untill we reach a population level that is only a fraction of what it is. And I agree with that... Its a grate idear... or even one child pur parent would be anuff.

By the way I think that if the mice, rats and rabbits where selfaware then would be thankfull to have lived and have been in a experiment (there not nesserserally painfull) then to never live at all.

oddguy, the subconscious is the part that makes dreams and such. anyway, sydney, computer simulations might not help. say we have this brand new wonder drug and we dont know how it performs on animals. therefore, we cant use a computer simulation. we have to use the animal itself in order to understand the implications of this new drug.

its IMPOSSIBLE at this point in technology to produce a software that could detect wether or not smoething is safe. there HAS TO BE a field test. sorry guys, but the only way to do it is animals. right now, my mom found out that we hav mice in our house. mice are dangerous because they hav the ability to care a wide veriety of deiseases and viruses to many other mice or people. wen it came to finding a way to get rid of the mice, i would have rather picked up the mice and set them down in a field miles away (joe the intern should know about things similar to wat im talkin about). but we couldnt, so we found a trap. since the trap was obviously safer on humans than mice, i took the liberty of turning the tables and putting the trap on my own hand. to my surprise and dismay, the trap DID NOT HURT. this meant that it would merely capture the mouse, and strangle it to death, rather than break its neck, giving it a much more humane death. well, i spoke with my mom about this n she said that she would rather rid the world of every last mouse than see me die from them. now my mom is ALWAYS the one whos looking for a harmless way out of things. she is a lot softer in the heart than me n still said this. this led me to think about animal testing on a personal level. sure, were all going around talking about how animal testing is wrong, but are any of us doing anything about it??? no, protesting just makes them close their facilities so that no one can get in...hense they feel more secretive n can perform much more lethal and riskier experiments on the animals. i mean, do any of you say "No, animal testing is wrong! Put me up on that table an inject me with a possible deadly chemical so that a lower species that reproduses more than eleven times as us, caries diseases, cannibalizes (yah, the DO!), and is nothing but a pestilance upon the Earth can live on and over populate this planet." No, no one sez that cuz theyre not nuts! we only care about our own affairs n not that of anyone or anything that isnt directly in front of us. do u know that in birundi, africa the majority of the people are between the ages of 1 and 4! the maximum life span is around 30 years old! they give every 15 year old a gun n wen he dies, his kids do the same. do any of us care about that? no! cuz our countries hav no reason to intervene! the news doesnt cover it cuz the country isnt valuable to the rest of the world! we all hav a thousand excuses as to why we arent over there protesting! now how is animal testing an issue so "inhumane" that it should be more important than the fact that HUNDREDS are killed each day in Birundi? BECAUSE WE ALL USE SHAMPOO, THERE ARE FACILITIES IN EASILY ACCESSIBLE AREAS OF YOUR COMMUNITY, ITS NOT DANGEROUS, N ITS A HELL OF A LOT MORE CONVINIENT! come on! dont waste simpathy on rats! use it on the women in afganistan who are raped, beaten, and left in the streets to not be attended to by medical attention simply because they are female! (damn the islamic factions!) and use it to weep for the children in China who are drowned to death immediately after birth because each family is only allowed two children. there are a lot more important causes worth fighting for in the name of all thats "humane". its these causes that oddworlds REALLY about.
