Fan Artwork: Slig (Whirled.com Avatar)

Hi everyone,

I registered here a while ago just for this purpose. I'm a member of the Whirled.com community, which is kind of a mix of a social website and a Flash gaming playground, but with a twist: Users create and sell all the content in the shop catalogs. This includes animated Avatars that people can wear, Pets that can follow you around, and furniture and room backdrops that people can buy and decorate their rooms with. These things are made primarily with Flash.

I'm quite into avatar-building myself, and one day I decided to make this in homage to one of my favourite Oddworld creatures; the Slig.



This is an avatar I created for Whirled. It was hand-painted in Photoshop from a small screenshot I found somewhere online. I drew it on several seperate layers, so that the arms and head could all move independantly and animate without any visible gaps.

You can click around in the Shop Preview window to move the avatar. He has the following animations: Idle, Walking, and ToWalking/FromWalking transitions (designed to blend the two states together as you move around). I did plan on having a 'Grenade Launch' action but could not find an appropriate sound-effect to go with it, and ran out of time (i.e. got distracted and started doing something else instead).

I knew there was a vibrant and loyal Oddworld fanbase here and that perhaps some art with a 'twist' might interest you. So I hope you enjoy it. Sorry that I don't have more to show you about him, as I started getting very busy after I started this, and I almost forgot to share it at all.

I'd love to expand the avatar with more States and Actions some time in the future. Sound effects would be great, if anyone can help with that... I've had no luck finding decent clips.

Wow man that's pretty cool. I'm a huge fan of Sligs myself and I can see the amount of detail you put into that. Not to mention the time. I've been to Whirled a couple times. There are some nice games on there. I'd really like to learn how to use flash that would allow me to distribute my games to a wider audience.
