Question Citizen Siege, to be doomed by CG Movie production?

Have you ever seen the horrible, horrible promotion art for Shrek3, with the women awkardly posing for the camera?

http://www.keithlango.com/wordpress/?p=295
This blog post is an inside the industry view, at why exactly this kind of thing is ever put out when such an incredible budget and amount of great artists is working there. He blames it on the production system.

http://www.keithlango.com/wordpress/?p=387 This is the last BlogPost of these series, it details a probable change for the better, but it also recopiles the whole conversation.

http://www.vfxworld.com/?sa=adv&code...id=3069&page=2 This is a postmortem of a CG movie which effectively sidesteps the problems pointed by the article.

This made me wonder, what abou Citizen Siege? will Lorne be doomed to suffer the same fate only because of the fact he's working with the same producer?

Now, I know Lorne is a great director, and I think if there's been CG that I think is truly of very high artistic standards it's OWI's. But....have you ever stopped to wonder, WHY?

Read the article, it's a simple matter of how the production line is built. Why did Lorne sidestep this? WILL he be able to sidestep it in CZ?

PLEASE DISCUSS! =)

I disagree- the production method for CGI movies may be flawed, but with a strong director to bring it all together it can work out beautifully. Think about it- most CGI movies are extremly artistic, yes?

Then again, I guess we will just have to see.

I think CS is too important to OWI for them to allow it to get messed up in any way, so I reckon it'll come out the way they want it to.

Z is near to S

Anyway, I hope CS doesn't get messed up. Should be pretty good.

I'm not too sure about that, I had the impression most of them were made simply to earn a lot of cash...

No film is made just to earn cash. This may be the reason why executives greenlight them, or why studios demand them, but at the heart of every project is someone who wants the film to made because they want to make this film.

I thought most CGI movies were made to keep small children preoccupied for a couple of hours.

I myself was a bit worried when I read about who would be in charge of the CG for Citizen Siege, but I'm putting my faith in Lorne to make sure things go as smoothly as possible.

O_o uhm, you guys kinda missed the point. would you just PLEASE look at the link I provided? it's very much worth the read, promiss. Much talk is there about the process of making an animated CG film, mostly about how late people get a view of the assembled product.

I've been making the topics I've been making just to get more talk going around the fans about WHY Oddworld works, rather than just the fact it does work and we should just really trust Lorne cause he's cool and stuff.

I could just answer to all of the replies here by quoting something I said in the starting post
:
Now, I know Lorne is a great director, and I think if there's been CG that I think is truly of very high artistic standards it's OWI's. But....have you ever stopped to wonder, WHY?
that's what interests me the most, to theorize how OWI works on their FMVS, and why they do or dont work, why they will or wont with CS.
EDIT: OK, went and changed the link so you get a fuller idea of the discussion that went trough the CG blogshpere

It might turn out to be one of those films with a huge following.

I miss Oddworld though.

OWI's FMVs for all four games so far have utilised internal production staff - modellers, animators, painters, etc.
All of this will be handled externally for the film; production will be outsourced.

I personally doubt it will look as good. I doubt they have the budget for Pixar-quality animation. It's relatively easy to make 10 minutes of high quality animation for a game when you have a few people working only on it for a couple of years (and even then you get moments of cheap crap, such as Stranger's 2D clothes in the reveal FMV). Making 90+ minutes, in a significantly higher resolution, in a reasonable timescale, is too expensive.

The holy trinity is speed - high quality - low costs. Thing is, you can only have two. Which two will Oddworld have for their film?

high quality if we believe what lorne says...
and low costs I guess, since speed was never OWI's main preoccupation (apart for AE of cource and MO's rebuild)

Now now, people... OWI are not going to ruin it... they aren't idiots who make films about ogres for kiddies. Remember, OWI wanted to make CG movies before the games(and before Shrek). They would.ve if it wasn't too expensive. They have had years to think it through, and after the mistakes they made with the release of MO, they will want to be sure that nothing like that ever happens again.
