Cell Phones in School?

Do cell phones have a place in our schools?? This is a great question as many of you will be returning to school and start a new year in your school life. Do you think that students should be allowed to have their cell phones at school.

I personally believe that they should. Why?? Because along time ago at my school there was what students refer to as the "Great Flood" the entire school was flooded and I don't think that the amount of phones in the school could have been enough for the kids to use that time, and if it weren't for cell phones many of us would have not been able to call our parents to pick us up or we would have had to wait really long to use the phones in the office and other locations at school.

Yes, cell phones can be used for both negative and positive purposes. But they should be allowed with limitations, if possible for school that have lockers have the kids leave them in their lockers, or bring the phone and leave it at the office. Kids also need to be responsible, you have been allowed the phones don't abuse them, as soon as you enter the school on mornings simply turn off your phone and when you leave at the end of the day you can turn them back on, there is no need to have them on all day long. If you parents need you urgently they can call the school.

Cell Phones are a great way for kids with over protective parents to check up on their kids, and when a parent is running late the kid can call to see what's up.

As over here there is a debate about it ..

My school banned them because some clunts were using their video phones to staged fights between pupils or extremely embarrassing arguments with teachers and post them on youtube.

Stupid clunts.

Eh. I say they should be allowed, within reason. Of course, they should be treated as a priviledge rather than a right - paving the way for them to be confiscated for individuals who breach the conditions.

In short; no. Phones were never really a problem when I was in school but now with all this 'happy slapping' bollocks, school is not the place for mobiles. If you ever need to make a phone call there's nothing stopping you from going to reception is there?

Also they'll be a distraction in class when someones phone goes off (and it always will). Oh and lets not forget there's always the problem of when someones phone goes missing or gets robbed...

I've always hated cell phones. Why? Because everyone needs one after they've gotten it. Some in my class say that they couldn't live without it. Everyone in my class (Other than me.) has one. They constantly play annoying music, film without permission, and call during school hours.

But if some extreme limitations were made I'd have nothing against it. These would be: don't use it during classes, or in the whatever you call the little breaks. Don't use it to play music. Don't use it to write annoying SMS's to other students. Don't use it as a camera. Keep it off when it's wherever you keep it so the annoying ring sound doesn't just pop up. And don't call unless you really have to. That would be the rules at my school. Alot of teachers here are extremely loose about this. Even their cell phones ring at times (Followed by a chorus of students saying they owe them a peice of candy.).

Otherwise cell phones, in my opinion are almost useless and just plain annoying. My opinion has been stated.

Well, since all the school clocks were analog, and I grew up with digital and am too lazy to learn it, my phone's the only way I catch the bus.

So I'm good with it.

Yes you should carry them with you, yes it should be on silent, no you can't answer it in the middle of your class.

It is a waste of the schools phone bill you ring your friend to say "Where are you? I've been looking for you all Lunch time?"

And sometimes you have to pay to use the phone at the reception - Why would you bother bringing money to school?

Yeah, that's my opinion too... that's how it works over here, and it works fine.

Every now and again we have a phone go off in class and then get turned off, we have no other problems. I'm not even sure if they're "supposed" to be allowed or not (I think you might be supposed to hand them in to the office), but that really doesn't seem to happen. No one really seems to mess around in class with them either.

Kids these days . Maybe I sound like an old grumpy bastard now but I never needed a phone in my school days and fail to see why kids should need one all of a sudden .

If phones were banned in schools then you wouldn't be ringing up your friend from school to ask them where they are. And I always brought money into school for buying food + bus fair......or do you kids use only debit cards these days?

EDIT: Oh and just to make my point clear here I'm on about phones should be banned in primary/secondary schools upto the age of 16. Sorry but if I was a teacher I just wouldn't trust kids not doing work and texting on their mobiles. /rant

plus you'd probably txt a friend to ask where they were... he said call through the office to emphasise how more convinient it would be to txt rather than not have the option and have to call.

Yea I know what you're saying, but if I was running a school the hassle that kids having phones would just be too much. But hey if kids turn their phones off in class or whatever it wouldn't bother me.

I can live without it, but personally- I think cell phones are quite useful.
I spend most of my time in school (sometimes for 13 hours a day), so I can call my dad to pick me up when it's too late to take a bus.
So yeah, they're allowed in our school, but don't you dare to use it during class

Actually, I never text. Sometimes if you text, it can end up taking over a day to get to the person you were intending on talking to. A bit useless if you're lunch break is an hour.

Wow, technology there must be useless. New Zealand has some of the slowest broadband internet in the world, but at least our text messages get recieved within 5 minutes of sending time. If they don't it's pretty weird.

Well, I never really use my Cellphone, (due to the fact I never have money on it) though all my friends bring theirs. I dunno why, they see each other almost every day, so why need to bring a cellphone to school? Our Graphics teacher all ways has his going off, it does get pretty darn irritating.

Though there are some reasons that they could be allowed, like if you need to contact someone, if you are going to town after school, so you can keep in contact. But otherwise, I think no, we do not really need cellphones at school, but if you do, just don't kick up a fuss when it gets nicked or somethin' like that.

Hehe, yesh, just be sneaky when you txt....

Phones weren't tolerated at my school and now I'd probably agree with the ban. Looking back on it there was alot of happy-slapping, thefts and disruptions caused by them.

But at the time I'd much rather be texting my friends in class than doing any kind of work.

I guess it really depends on whether you're in school or not. I doubt there's actually anyway that any adult would allow children to freely use their phones at school.

It's a factor of probability though. I heard on the radio a while ago a representative of one of the major mobile companies in Australia stating that 90% of text messages arrive within an hour. That sounds good but it also implies that one in ten takes longer than an hour, up to a day in some cases.

But why did you need to know immediately? What difference would it have made to your life if you'd found out an hour later, in recess? What could you have done in the middle of class if things were good or not so good?
