No, race is the right word. It's used the same way as "varieties" are in, say, plants. We're certainly no less different from each other than the subspecies of tigers. It is an interesting juxtaposition, where science has stepped back for our own good.

And it's not about politcal correctness, you shouldn't even use the word race unless you're reffering to humans, we shouldn't need to use the word racist becuase people shouldn't descriminate other "races" (and we wouldn't use that word, if we didn't have people trying to discriminate against each other).
Ok, think humanity, or the human race as a jumper, and these "races" are all threads, some person wants to seperate themselves from the others, so they are not attached to the other, genetically speaking, and so they are sperate from them, so the term race is used.
Oh, and Salamnder, I use smilies to make light of the situation, and to ease tention when going through uneasy toppics of argument, and in general, to help make everyone cheerier, so with that in mind, they are relevant.

It's not up to you if we decide something is worth arguing over, people here usually love to go off on tangents anyway.

But as I said, I am full of contempt for the people who are obsessed with being politically correct, or are offended by a word or phrase that 'demeans their race'. Like how midgets think it's a deragatory term, how they prefer 'little-people'. Midget is not a word that's supposed to make fun of them, in my mind.

While I agree their are some terms for other people that should'nt be used in any way since they are hurtful (the most prominent one is, of course, nigger), the vast majority of terms used these days to describe different types of people are not in any way hurtful or demeaning. But some people are apparently so afraid of getting sued or offending someone that they want to make 100% sure people cannot take it the wrong way. Even if the people who get offended by it should be slapped anyway for being so mentally or emotionally sensitive about their heritage.

I was just pointing out that "race" simply determines different varieties within a species, often emerged through geographical isolation, and can be seen in many species besides humans, though we do not tend to call those "races" so much as "varieties" and even "subspecies". The latter of which, if applied to people, would be an interpretational minefield, assuming of course that the human races had diverged enough to be called such. Such diversion is quickly deteriorating with modern travel, now that few populaions are truly geogaphically isolated.

I just think it is interesting the way we attempt to preserve the subspecies or other organisms, but only the worst people in the world are interested in doing the same to people. And I am very much opposed to that sort of attitude, I just think it is an interesting insight into he values we place on humanity. Clearly concerns about discrimination feature heavily, and free will (the freedom to choose a partner of a different race to reproduce with, for example). Evolution is what made the races appear, the early onset of speciation, but that is being reversed by our ability to globally integrate.

Again, what I find interesting is the way we as conservationists are horrified to see that occur in the animal and plant kingdoms, as part of the loss of diversity that the current mass extinction brings, but we have the total opposite attitude when it comes to humans. And the reason is that we ourselves are human.

Clearly this is a speciesist attitude, with the unusual quality of probably being a good one. Says the self-admitted speciesist. It is very difficult to look at objectively when you are as intimately involved with the issue, as all Homo sapiens are.
