Dead I fucking Hate Greenpeace.

Whaling.

So in case you haven't heard, a bunch of Greenie gits on a boat they named the "Steve Irwin" (Oh god.) are chasing around and harassing poor Japanese whalers, who are just doing their jobs.

Jesus, people.

The thing is, is that those Whalers are part of the ecosystem now, and if you take them away, the Sperm Whales will grow more numerous and eat all the much cooler and awesome-er Giant squids.

And Giant Squids are fucking awesome.

So I think that the whalers aren't really killing too many whales, and if Whale is edible, why aren't you off freeing the cows and pigs and chickens? I'm sure whales would smell just as bad if you took them out of the water for a while.

Fucking Romantic-Nature-loving-bearded-pot-greenies.

Discuss.

Greenpeace doesn't quite strike the same tone as PETA with me, but they're coming pretty close. Basically all extremists are annoyinng. Particularly those that actually try to bring their beliefs into existence.

I once had a rock thrown at my car because of my "nuke the whales" bumper sticker.

Had I not heard someone yell "I love whaaaaaaaaales!" right before the rock hit my car, it would have been a mystery.

I didn't see the connection then, but I do now!

Fuck greenpeace.

I'm no fan of the modern Greenpeace. They have fucked up big time.

However, there are few things, if any, on Grob's green Earth that piss me off more than whaling, and I don't care who is doing it. I was damn near in tears when we touched on this particular topic in my Verts course. Fuck.

What the japanese are doing is illigal, so yes they're just doing their jobs, but so are assasins, and terrorists if you want to call that a job.
They're unbalacing the ecosystem anyways, if they could, they'd make the bloody things extinct :K
But it appears alot of people share your oppinions, the french, and now the japanese...
They do go too far though

I am against whaling. Scientific reasons my ass. That a complete load of crap, and everyone knows it. I mean, whats the need? Sure you can eat them , but damnit, they are all but extinct.

Sure, but its not like there are millions of whales.

Dude, if the Whales managed to survive the massive hunts previously, then they'll be fine with this piddly little fleet.

And anyway, shouldn't they be saving the rest of the poor animals dying horribly in slaughterhouses across the globe?

Why do giant fat blubbery fish-cows diserve special treatment? Why should we let them devour the poor Giant Squid too?

Fucking ecosystem sucks.

'Dying horribly'? how do you think whales are killed? With a 'lethal injection' which puts them to sleep? I think not. due to whales being so damn big, it takes alot to kill them. They get shot with guns, harpooned, and usually tied to the side of the boat and slowly drowned. Yeah, a real peaceful death.
And Giant Squid can put up one hell of a fight, and can swim to deeper water in the ocean to escape the whales. They can also survive losing some limbs.

The whalers are still part of the ecosystem, they've been doing it forever.

Take them out now, you change it.

That's what they said about the dodos, the tasmainian tigers, and those american pigeons, and half of the speacies in the amazon, and heaps of others speacies we've wiped out believe it or not, if we can cause or planet to melt and freeze over at the same time, we can wipe out a speacies easily.
I mean, were you on the side of the french when they blew up the "Rainbow warrior"?
Come on, it's not Greenpeace that makes the rules anyway, it's not Greenpeace's fault that Japan can't whale, maybe they helped but they didn't make the desiscion, they're just trying to stop the Japanese from breaking the law, becuase no one else will, becuase it's supposedly for "scientific research", but you don't need to kill them.

Rainbow Warrior was a stupid name, so I'm with the French.

*sigh* Another example, Wolves.

In the US, Wolves are regularly culled, because they don't, the numbers of wolves, while pretty low, skyrocket pretty quickly and they start killing lots of livestock.

Besides, things eat other things. Bears in the wild don't need to specifically target salmon, they could gang up on deer or elk or whatever, or eat small things like squirrels or rabits. They don't, they go after easier prey.

And whales are pretty easy to kill, and the meat comes in large amounts and is pretty good, from what I hear. And the Greenpeace guys themselves mentioned on TV that the amount getting killed aren't actually going to badly affect the species, as they've recovered quite a bit.

If people want to pay a ton of money for some good food, let them.

Damn, Ghost, do you know anything about whales? There can be no sustainable whaling, it is a biological impossibility, just as it is with shark fishing. They reproduce too infrequently, grow up too slowly and invest too much energy in raising their young for commercial whaling to be anything than an unmitigated disaster. Just like it was last time.

from Beddington & May, 1982, in Evans, 1987

It's pretty dire, some of these species were saved in the nick of time. Now, yes, they have been recovering in the past twenty years, but are nowhere near pre-whaling populations. I mean, what was this pretence about banning whaling for them to recover if we don't actually plan on letting them do just that? They pull the same crap with fish stock recovery as well, but they don't have the same PR as whales.

Japan is so dishonest about its whaling. They claim "scientific purposes," but that's bullshit. Checking out the ISI Web of Knowledge database for papers on cetaceans published in 2006, there were 488 worldwide, only 0.8%, or 2, came either from Japan or required the slaughtering of the animal.
They lost yet another argument last year (which was studying their diet- the most counter-intuitive concept I've ever come across in marine biology) when a method for studying the whale's faeces was developed. Whales don't have to die in the mockery of conservation that Japan has failed to deceive us with.

You may notice from that graph that minke populations increased. Being the smallest of the baleen whales they were not targeted during the bloodied age of whaling like the others were, and the lack of competition from other whales allowed them to grow more numerous, not that this has gone unnoticed and unexploited since then.

South Korea also whales in the Sea of Japan. If you catch a minke by accident and you report the by-catch, you can legally sell the meat. Between 1999 and 2003, fishermen reported 458 whales. Researchers bought whale meat from several markets during this period and genetically analysed it to see how many minkes the meat came from. To cut a long story short, more than 800 minkes had hit the market. Since one whale can go for $100,000, it's a stretch to believe that these are all accidental. The upshot? Another form of unregulated whaling.

Nah, you're totally clear and right.

However, if they're targeting Minkes down near the Arctic, where there aren't any evil South Koreans, then the numbers would be plentiful and not as harmful.

Do you have a reason for being against green peace with the "Rainbow warrior" apart from it's name?
They were test nukes in precious coral reefs, killing many more speacies then whales
Still, BM, has a good point, as does everyone against Japan's whaling, their bullshit isn't even clever, and everyone knows what they're doing, and the whale numbers aren't going to sustain if the Japanese keep it up, and when the whales are whiped out, what are you gonna say?
"Sorry guys, I was wrong"?

Not as harmful...? They're migratory!

What's this garbage about ecosystems and giant squid?

I'd like to retract my previous statement. Minkes are in fact the second smallest species of baleen whale, and the smallest rorqual.

It's very bizarre isn't it?

Actually I just wanted to whip up some forum-ire away from "Mudling Vs. OANST: Stone Cold 2" and get some unified action going.

Now I'm happy, because I can see we all agree on something.

Giant Squids are still fucking awesome, and "Steve Irwin" is a terrible name for a boat, even so.

And that about wraps this up.

Have to agree with you there, Ghostie.
Though not on anything else…I eat babies
However, whalers are not part of the ecosystem. As Bullet Magnet showed, whales take an extremely long time to mature, and produce offspring, and whalers are over killing, and they should even in the first place. I mean, what do they think whales would do, if they multiplyed? Aside from balancing out the natural ecosystem, or whatever the hell it is, do they think the whales would attack? Pfft, whalers are just in it for the money. If they want meat, why not sheep and other plentiful live stock? Not
critically endangered sea-cows. Greedy bastards.

  1. You are an idiot, and I’m only thankful BM got to you before I could.
  2. The ubiquitous Anti‐Mudling movement should be quitened now, anyway.
  3. Steve Irwin may seem bad for a ship, but it’s better than the vessel’s previous name: Robert Hunter.
  4. Greenpeace are militant idiots who do nothing to promote their cause.

EDIT: Actually, I relax my views on your idiocy purely for your use of the term ‘Greenie gits’.

For a moment there, when looking at the forum index, I thought this topic said "I Fucked Nate"... I was about to die of shock horror .

But yea, Greenpeace fails.

Ok, so if whalers are part of the ecosytem, who's going to eat the whalers? Sonner or later, according to the ecosytem rules, with no one to eat them, they're going to flourish and the world will be overcome with whalers

I once had a rock thrown at my car because of my "nuke the whales" bumper sticker.
Lol. I would have a bumper sticker like that if I had a car, despite the fact that I don't actually think Whales should be nuked. People who throw stones at your car for a meaningless joke need to get a life.

I don't think Whaling should be allowed, yet I can see your side of the argument, in how they are just doing their job.

Yet the business owners aren't just doing their job, they are deliberately setting out to kill whales (And mostly whales on the verge of extinction, not just ordinary whales). When countries go to war, they pick on the soliders who are just doing their job, not the leaders of the country.

If there was a dangerously endangered type of fish or bird they would be doing the same thing.

I don't think whaling is wrong if there are thousands of that type of whale, but if they are near extinct, then yes, I completely agree with greenpeace, and I also think the company should have enough sense to think
"hang on a minute, if we kill all these endangered whales, then we'll all be out of a job soon"
