GOD

Get one thing clear, I am not gonna slag off God or anything like that, Okay? Also, no one else should do that either, we are civilized around here. So, now that we got that outta the way I have a question,
IS GOD A MALE OR FEMALE? (see the poll, duh.)
I'm not really sure what gender God is, a He or She or maybe both? After all there are many arguments, stupid and reasonable about Gods gender, and I wish to know what these fellows of this Forum think. I actually believe that God is female, as women mean life and birth and whatever. After all, Men cannot have children (give birth) so that doesn’t really make any sense that God ‘made’ them. So what do you people think?

I think God might be both, as He/She had sons, (both genders) and women mean life and renewity (?) and men are needed to help make the life as well...Still, it seems creepy that we were all born from a Hermaphrodite.

Well, if you want me to get deep in the theology and stuff, God isn't really anything. He just made the stuff. Though if he had a gender, it'd probably be female, however I'm going with both because of the aforementioned God-hermaphrodite case. He's just God, 'nuff said.

Yes, this topic's stupid.

But for the sake of things, I would think that God would be beyond gender. God has been recognized by a variety of cultures in different forms and genders.

I would go more along the direction of 'neither', which I'm shocked you didn't include. I mean, physical, biological characteristics of sex really don't apply to an omnipresent, unphysical, supernatural creature.

That said, there's a lot of literature in Jewish theology regarding the gender of god, mainly in that the different aspects of His personality are ascribed to the feminine (mercy) or masculine (justice). Different names are often used when discussing the various aspects as well.

The Bible says that God made man (Adam) in his own image.
Woman was made later, using one of Adam's ribs.
So yeah, God's male.

Oh, my, what a nub.

It depends on what God you are talking about. The genders are different, there are female Gods in Hinduism, for example.
If you are talking about the god in Christianity, Catholicism... I don't think that god has a gender. My opinion.

That's what I assume he is talking about. And the reason I used He is because that is what most people view God in judeo-christian religions/regions. I could have refered to God as an It, but that just doesn't seem to work with me. I use He as a general term, even though it makes pretty much no sense. By the way, you do realise you left out an important part of the post, right?

Since most people so far have considered god as either yahweh or the christian God, that is what I go with. I'm also christian, so I consider god as God, if you catch my drift. I will still call him a he, again only because "it" doesn't sound right.

So when we start talking about any Hindi gods, you let me know.

Good point. But that would suggest that everything the church has done is completely what God wanted and that the bible is not slightly flawed even though it was written by men. Were the crusades right? No more than Jihads, but it is justified because christians did it, right? Not to say that God isn't a guy, but I imagine more of a force. I think God is who you imagine. A lot of people imagine him as the wise man with a big white beard, but some imagine her as a loving mother. Then again, WTF do I know?

Well, men were considered the 'bomb' back in those days, while women were viewed as house slaves and a waste of space, so no wonder everyone refers to God as Male.

This topic is pointless.

I don't believe in God, and therefore couldn't care less what gender everyone's God is. But if we're going by the bible, God'd have to be male for two reasons:

1. Because he's referred to as he.
2. Because Chirstians woudn't stand for a woman being in charge of them. It would be much too Pagan.

You do realise Catholicism was the original form of Christianity, right?

I think God is genderless, but reveals itself as male for the sake of convenience. There is also the problem of a woman impregnating a woman (biologically impossible) and the God the Father aspect, and the most accurate depictions I've seen depict God as relatively masculine;

I think, ultimately, God looks like this;

Back on topic...

I can see why a lot people don't care either way, because it doesn't apply to them. Snuzi, I'm christian and I think the idea of a female god would make sense. I think most of the christian law is somewhat untrue. The important thing is what you are doing what is right. I'm not out to "Save" any of you, because it is retarded. If we are supposed to love each other, if we are supposed to be kind, why do we try to make everyone like us?

Well, one interpretation of genesis has Adam created as a hermaphrodite, then the female side removed later to create Eve.

1. Because he's referred to as he.
Hebrew doesn't have genderless pronouns. The male version is used in any ambiguous situation; e.g. a group of 100 females would use the female 'they' pronoun but a group of 99 females and 1 male or a group of 100 people where you don't know the collective gender would use the male.

:
I think, ultimately, God looks like this;
That would be the male-aspect-name I was talking about. The female one is the bottom of the following:

Why would He need to be either? I mean, yeah, He's always referred to as... you know... He, but what purpose would genitalia serve to an omnipotent entity? Gender-specific pronouns are just... blah blah... mankind trying to describe that which is essentially unable to be completely understood... blah blah blah...

You get it.
