Oddworld Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus version

Hello,
Once, I had one version of AO.
That version had the newer mudokon pop package, black bombs and I think it had the 3 fingered Abe.
Then, I lost it and had another version.
That version had the older package, white bombs and 4 fingered Abe.
Also, I saw screenshots with other changes in AO (such as a Paramite instead of a Scrab in the game begining and some ray instead the bees).

In AE, I have white bombs, but I saw a video of the game with Black bombs.

So I have few questions:
1. How many versions does AO and AE has?
2. What is the reason for having 2 versions of both games, one with black bombs and one with white bombs?
3. Is there any official patch to upgrade AO/AE to the latest version?

Thanking in advance,
-LIJI

I think you may have had the Japanese version of the game. And the Paramite screens that you're seeing were never used in any of the games.

I know about that Japanese version thing.
But I know that in newer English versions the new package and the 3-fingered Abe was used.

Well, the screens seem to be official: (seen on Oddworld.com)
http://www.oddworld.com/firsttenyear...reens/img4.jpg - You can see a paramite on your left
http://www.oddworld.com/firsttenyear...reens/img6.jpg - the "Lights" looks difference on my game.
http://www.oddworld.com/firsttenyear...eens/img34.jpg - I never had a brown button.
http://www.oddworld.com/firsttenyear...reens/img3.jpg - 3 paramites instead of 1 scrab.

The Paramites in the Stockyards and the Elum Trap (the ray that was replaced with bees) were in an earlier, unfinished version of the game. Games go through lots of changes before they go gold, and these are just a couple. The different hintfly font and different bomb designs are other examples.

Later issues of Abe’s Oddysee do indeed include the three‐fingered Mudokons and less gory Mudokon Pops package design. I’ve never come across such a copy myself.

Ok, thanks for clearing the Elum ray and Paramites thing.
But I'm still not sure about the bombs.
There is a version of AO with white bombs and a version with black bombs and the same thing for AE.
If they wanted to change the bomb design they would change it once, not change it to black, back to white and back to black again.

Well the PC versions have white bombs, if I'm correct.

It occurs to me that many may be confused by the terms ‘white bombs’ and ‘black bombs’, so here a couple of gameplay screenshots comparing each variety of land mine.

‘White’ land mines in a screen capture from Abe’s Oddysee

‘Black’ land mines in a screen capture from Abe’s Exoddus

Both look familiar, but I've never particularly noticed a difference before...

Does anyone have shots of the Elum trap? I don't recognise the description.

Elum trap:

I think that the PS version had only Black bombs, PC has boths. (I played AP once with white bombs and once with black)

Yet I still wonder what caused 2 versions.

Also, about the older, Unfinished versions. Were they released somewhen? who had them?

And for the last question, where can I check if my AE copy is up to date and where can I upgrade it to the latest version?

I'm afraid you'll just have to buy a new copy if you aren't happy with your current version. Try looking on Amazon or eBay, there's always lots there.

I was wondering why those mines looked weird (i.e. white) in the manual...
At least, I think they did. I remember seeing them somewhere, anyway...

There’s no upgrading. Nothing is really different; the only changes are cosmetic.

The unfinished builds of the game weren’t released publicly. There are probably a few discs containing early material used within OWI and to share with GT Interactive, but Uranus will be hot long before they surface as purchasable or sharable.
