Ability to edit the title of your thread

I've been thinking about a few ways to improve OWF, and I hit upon this idea from another forum. I think you should be able to edit the title of your thread after you post it.

An example of this would be Wolfpac's OWF awards. After all the votes are in, he simply edits the title of the topic by adding VOTING CLOSED to it, and stop people from still voting.

Another is how forums can be (slightly) more efficent in clean-up of topics.

Maybe a question about AO or AE is answered in the topic. The creator can just add QUESTION ANSWERED to the title, to let people know it's done.

It could save people from just recklessly posting based on the title, instead of not reading the post. I mean, what is faster: reading the title, or reading the first post?

Anyways, I think being able to edit the title of your thread would hugely benefit the forums.

I'll have to think about this one. Currently, the thread starter can edit the title of the thread 5 minutes after it's posted - failing that, thread titles are usually changed upon request by a Moderator.

Still, I'll think about it a little more.

Moderators are able to change the title of a thread if need be. Your plan sounds good, but I don’t want to wade through the Forums one day in the far future and see topics with ‘ANSWERED’ branded on them. Plus, the thread creator is not always the best person to determine when a thread has served its purpose. I think the way threads grow, develop, and peter out is just fine.

The example of Wolfpac’s annual awards is a good one, but moderators can change thread titles easily.

I think he just wants to change his OWF Untold Legend part 2 name, so that he can keep it for the revised version that he'll be starting...in a moment, I believe.

And it never would have been found out if it hadn't been for you meddling kids!

Nice idea, but a problem with the newbies. If they don't like their thread title, they could keep changing it, causing a LOT of fuss for the mods.

You mods just don't want to lose some of your power over the forums.
Another useful thing would be if people could delete their posts in threads.
It probably used to be like that, and maybe when Alcar become Administrator
here, he changed things around a little...

Ah, yes, let's blame everything on Alcar.

If people could just delete their posts then certain threads wouldn't make any sense, since a part of the conversation would be missing. It would confuse those of us that want to look back on older posts.

I only became an Administrator around a year ago - prior to that I was a Super Moderator. It was only after I promoted SeaRex and changed the staff positions and roles around that I jumped up a smidgin.

As for deleting posts, members have never been allowed to delete posts, ever. Not under Sydney's rule, Abe Babe's rule, or mine. Even now, Moderators are unable to permanently remove posts - deleted posts are still stored in the database, and are easy to retrieve / view. The main reason behind this is because by deleting a post you are removing the OWF's history, and muddling up what once was a coherent thread.

Which is similar to why I hesitate to allow thread title editing, and this is backed up by what Max the Mug had to say a few posts up.

Alcar...

Actually, I am quite interested to see the layout of the forum with the options available to mods and admins, how it looks compared to the average pleb's version.

It's not much different. We just have a few options here and there that say: 'Smack this idiot around the room for two hours untill he stops being a jackass'.

I rarely get to use it though .

I remember when the ability for users to delete their own posts was first removed. There was quibbling, but I don’t think it was ever seen as an atrocious suppression of power.

If you make a forum, then make yourself an Admin/Mod, you can see all the options! The admin options are very interesting, but in my opinion, the mod options are pretty boring... Unless there's someone you can use em on!
