Post Something weird/funny(Oddworld related)I found in my Psychology book!

Hey everyone!Yesterday(1-18-2007)I was reading my Psychology book and saw a picture of a woman, who was obviously a doctor, surrounded by bottles of medicen. At the bottom of the picture were some words stating that the picture had been taken from the "Vocational Industrial Clubs of America".Now,if the first letter of each word in that title is taken,it spell's "VICA"!Pronounced Vykka, gangsta slang for Vykker!Isn't that strange?!

It's just a coincidence. I bet you can find Oddworld-related references all over the place if ya looked hard enough .

Well, a pretty cool coincidence since the picture was doctor related, but as they have said above me, no more than a coincidence. Good eye, though.

Guys, honestly, this is no big deal. Things look like things, it happens.
There's no weird connection, it's just a coincidence.

Native I just thought my find was pretty funny!

Okay,I agree that it was a coincidence, but you gotta admit it was pretty weird. And,have you ever thought about how Lorne came up with all of the character names?Maybe he looked through some books seeking ODD words to use. What do you guys think?

Naming is a design process just like designing is. You have to get the right feel with each word, and since that is something I always try to do, I can tel you how difficult and frustrating that is, especially without a crack team of Inhabitants. They also like to combine words that give a familiar feeling, but with a kick, a sort of "eew" factor. Scrab comes from crab and scab, for instance.

Yes, most of the words are usually combines with words we already have created, and some of them are just slightly altered to make the name sound Oddworld-ish.

When it comes to the others that don't fall into those two categories, all I can think of is that they make 'em up. I do the same thing when I have to give a character an odd name. It isn't all that hard, actually .

I always wondered where the word vykker comes from.
Now I think, every species-names of Oddworld Inhabitants are not really invented but inspired of anything from anywhere.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. Lorne probably created the word vykker
right out of vykka because they both have to do with doctors. It's a little
humor that authors have to use to make their stories creative.

Yeah, I agree wholeheartedly with OANST. Some members should consider themselves lucky that stupidity is not a warnable offence.

If you cared to do a little research, you would know that VICA is a "United States career and technical student organization serving more than 284,000 high school and college students and professional members enrolled in training programs in technical, skilled, and service occupations, including health occupations." Nothing specifically to do with doctors at all.

We're dealing with Occam's Razor people: It's far more likely that Lorne & co came up with a cool sounding name themselves then that they would choose to make an extremely vague reference that no-one would be likely to get anyway. Thus we must assume that the former is true and the latter not.

Maybe because it's a cesspool of paranoia?

EDIT: Well, not paranoia....is there a word for seeing things that are not there just because you want them to be there...?

Mods, on the whole, prefer not to actively close threads. It will die a natural death when people stop posting in it.

The lighter touch is the way to go.

Interesting finds! However, I'll agree wholeheartedly with Max. These are definately just coincidences, albeit interesting, the correlations are nothing more than an illusion.

That very same phenomenon is frequently referred to by some people as "fate" "destiny" and "a sign".

Oopsies I meant to quote Nate about Occam's Razor! Such an obvious Freudian slip on my part.

I guess these connections do relate to the whole mistakes when differentiating between fate and coincidence and dream symbolism to the higher degree.
