Dead Oddworld Just Got Stranger

Okay! Hey Stinky! Let’s do this huh?

The Wilds
Bailey had to talk to Haigar, and as soon as she and Loki returned. Loki left the human with a fond farewell, once again with that hint of sadness and said they would have to go out again.

They decided to keep the butterfly meadow a secret for the time being.

As soon as Loki had gone, Bailey broke into a run. She had to find Haigar, right now. She didn’t dare ask any of the Steef she passed, didn’t want to feed the rumours that were apparently already circulating, no need to give them fuel…

She needn’t have worried about finding Haigar, as the young Steef found her. Bailey never did manage to work out how he did it, one moment she was running, looking all over for him. The next, a large, warm hand, bigger and stronger then her own, closed around her own, considerably more delicate hand. Bailey jumped and turned around quickly, but broke into a smile, returning the one Haigar was giving her, his blue eyes dancing, he squeezed her hand.

“C’mon, let’s get outta here…” still smiling, the dark Steef led the human by the hand, away from the huts, towards the wild places. For a second Bailey had misgivings, what Loki had told her in the butterfly field, running through her mind. Bailey brushed it away.

She would not give up her friend for gossip. She glanced at Haigar, as they entered the trees, feeling her gaze the young, dark Steef looked down at her and she saw his smile, she knew he wasn’t prepared to give her up either. As soon as they entered the trees, Haigar slowed the pace and then stopped, reached around and placed his hands on Bailey waist, pausing a moment before picking her up and setting her on his back again. Then he set of again,

“I seem to recall that I was meant to take you out, but we never got to go…” he remarked after a moment.

“Can we go now?” Bailey asked, playing along. Haigar chuckled,

“Yes.” Bailey laughed softly to herself,

“M’sorry about that blue.” She amended, “Musta been more tuckered then I thought.”

“S’okay.” Haigar murmured, almost purring, “No harm done.” There was a pause,

“You seem happier now.” Bailey commented. Immediately she felt all the muscles in his back go rigid.

“Bay…” he was using that tone of voice again, the one that Bailey couldn’t quite identify. “There’s somethin’ you should know…about us…”

“I know.” Bailey cut in gently,

“You…know?” Haigar echoed uncertainly, Bailey leaned her forehead against his shoulder-blade and nodded,

“Yeh, Loki told me… Maybe,” she ventured after a moment, “Maybe they’re right, maybe we should stop going off together…I don’t want to be the reason you spend your life alone…”

Haigar stopped dead.

“Bay. Come here.” Bailey slid down from the Steef’s back and moved around to face him. For a moment, Steef and human looked at each other, then Haigar lowered himself down, curling his four legs beneath him so that he and Bailey were at eye-level. “Listen Bay,” he took her hand, closing his clawed fingers gently around hers. “If I couldn’t find a female who cares about you as much as I do, then I don’t want one.”

“But-” Bailey began to object, Haigar put a finger on her lips, silencing her protests, he shook his head, long black braid swinging gently.

“No buts… I won’t give you up because of a load of rumours.” He said firmly.

“Haigar…” Bailey tried to dissuade him but he would have none of it.

“No Bailey. Have I ever given up on you before?” Bailey shook her head mutely, “Have you ever given up on me?” Again Bailey shook her head, but this time she couldn’t remain silent;

“Haigar, think about this please.” She pleaded, “You can’t put your chance of future family and happiness on the line, because of me.” The human pressed her forehead to Haigar’s, “I will always be there for you blue, any time you need me. But I can’t let you do something so rash. I won’t.” the Steef chuckled mirthlessly,

“And how will you stop me little human?” Bailey looked away, knowing that she couldn’t answer. Haigar sighed and rested his jaw against her forehead. There was another silence. “I love you Bay.” Haigar said at last, “No matter what anyone says.” Bailey nodded into his fur,

“I love you too buddy.” She replied. After a pause Haigar rose, he offered a hand to Bailey, she ignored it and put her arms around his middle. “I won’t give up on you.” Haigar let out a quiet breath of relief. He hugged the human tightly and one unbidden through rose up in his mind;

“Let it always be like this…”

Haigar didn’t know what he meant by those words.

¤§¤

“Just a bit further and you’ll see it.” Haigar said, Bailey was walking beside him now as they pushed through the dense tangles of the forest around them.

“See what?” Bailey giggled. Haigar grinned down at her, as they continued to weave their way through the vegetation.

“You’ll see.” he smiled.

They walked on for a bit longer, but finally they broke the trees and came to a small clearing, the canopy was so thick overhead that it blotted out the sky, casting the clearing with a green light. Bailey stared, her eyes wide. Before them was a huge, deep, green-lit pool. Trees grew around it’s banks and there was a thick, fallen log lying across the water, making a bridge, wide enough to cross. There was even a small waterfall at one end that came down from where the earth jutted upward.

“Wow…” Bailey breathed. Her eyes gleamed as she smiled. She looked up at Haigar and grinned delightedly. “Thank-you blue.” Haigar returned the smile and laid a hand on her shoulder,

“S’not much, but I wanted you to see it.” he explained in a low voice.

“I think it’s wonderful.” Bailey said honestly. With a childish grin Bailey grabbed Haigar’s hand and tugged, “C’mon blue!” she pulled him towards the fallen log.

“Bay,” Haigar said uncertainly, “Bay, be careful…” Bailey put out her arms and moved like a tightrope walker across the log.

“S’ok blue.” She reassured. “See?” she bounced up and down, almost as soon as she’d said it, Bailey wobbled and almost lost her balance. She squawked and Haigar yelled, and vaulted forward.

Bailey had just resigned herself to getting wet, when suddenly a warm, strong arm wrapped around her stomach and held her steady,

“I got’cha Bailey, don’t worry.” Said Haigar’s voice by her ear, Bailey felt a jolt to her stomach. He just sounded like Stranger…and Bailey felt suddenly very safe. She smiled and patted Haigar’s hand.

“I’m not worried blue.” She murmured, “I’m not worried.” She quietly rubbed Haigar’s forearm in small circles with her fingers. “You’re my best friend Haigar. How could I worry when you’re around?” She said at last. Haigar smiled to himself and buried his snout into Bailey’s hair, nudging her fedora up slightly and Bailey giggled as it slid over her eyes, “Blue, careful!”

“Um hm.” Haigar muttered, not really listening, he had his eyes closed as he nuzzled into her hair. She was warm, and she smelt absolutely wonderful. He let out a sigh and leaned his furry cheek against Bailey’s neck. Bailey reached back and scratched his ear and they stood, just quietly stood, by the green pool.

Suddenly, as if caught by a faint breeze, Bailey’s fedora was snagged from her head and landed in the water, where it bobbed, floating.

“Aw man.” she sighed, Haigar loosened his grip on her and Bailey couldn’t help noticing that he didn’t release her completely. “Well,” she continued, gently slipping out of Haigar’s arms, “I’m gonna have ta go in there and get it.” she grinned at Haigar’s wide-eyed expression before she swan-dived into the pool, disappearing into the water.

“Bay!” Haigar shouted. He dropped down, bending his Steef legs and looked out over the water, “Bay!” he called in concern, scanning the surface of the pool, looking for her. After a moment Bailey resurfaced, flicking back her head, flinging her hair from her eyes. Haigar sighed in relief and smiled.

“C’mon Haigar!” Bailey called, grinning. “The water’s great!” the human paddled over to her hat and dumped the wet dark brown suede onto her head. Haigar chuckled. “You laughin’ at me blue?” Bailey asked amusedly. Haigar grinned,

“Maybe.” Bailey laughed and slapped the water,

“Get in here you rotten Steef.” Haigar stood and put up his hands,

“Oh no, I ain’t comin’ in there.” He said vehemently,

“Aw, c’mon blue.” Bailey wheedled. “ I promise I won’t get back at’cha fer laughin’…” she grinned slightly evilly, “…Much…” Haigar chuckled and explained unabashed;

“S’not that Bay, I don’t know how to swim.” Bailey stared at him.

“You what?” she asked in surprise, Haigar shrugged,

“Not many Steef know how.” He said nonchalantly. “We used too, but since we were driven away from the Mongo…”

“Stranger can swim.” Bailey protested,

“That’s different.” Said Haigar, “And anyway, he was born before Sekto came, he prolly learned when he was a Steefling. Can all humans swim?”

“Most of ‘em, although some of ‘em learn quite late. I can swim though.” She added with a grin, “D’you want me ter teach yer?”

“Hrm…” Haigar looked uncertain,

“Aw, go on.” Haigar sighed and grinned, with a sudden, wordless yell the Steef plunged into the water. Bailey shrieked as the wave Haigar created washed over her, drenching the human in cold water. “HAIGAR!” The Steef’s head popped out of the water, he grinned and shook himself, splashing Bailey with more cold droplets. He chuckled at her noise of outrage. She pointed at him ominously, “Oh you are so gonna pay fer that boy.” She threatened. Haigar chuckled again and caught Bailey around the middle, pulling her close until their noses were almost touching.

“You’ll have ter get away from me first…” he said in a low voice, still grinning. Knowing very well Bailey could do absolutely nothing against a Steef of his size and strength. Bailey scowled at him and smacked his chest lightly.

“That’s low blue, really low.” Haigar grinned again and pulled Bailey into a crushing hug.

“I’d never hurt you Bailey, you know that right?” Bailey pulled away and looked at Haigar in surprise.

“Blue? What the heck’re you talkin’ about?” She stroked his cheek gently, “You ain’t sick are yer?” she felt his forehead. Haigar took her hand,

“No, no I’m not sick, I…I just want you to know that I would never, ever hurt you, ever.” He was looking into her eyes intently. He seemed, almost desperate, for Bailey to believe him. “I care about you.”

Bailey remembered a conversation very like this, between her and Stranger. She’d just found out that her father had taken Stranger when he was a Steefling. She remembered how desperate she had been to make him understand how much she loved him and that she would never hurt him. She looked Haigar straight in the eye and smiled,

“I know. I understand. I know you would never, ever, ever try and hurt me and I know you love me. I love you too, very much.” Haigar seemed relieved, Bailey smiled and buried her face in Haigar’s neck, feeling the warm, soft fur caress her face.

Haigar ran a thumb down her neck. He closed his eyes as he hugged Bailey close. Once again, at that moment, Chiron’s voice re-played – unwanted - in his mind, about what people were saying about himself and Bailey. He savagely dismissed the idea, though he cared about Bailey, cared a great deal about, he loved her- His thought train stopped dead and backtracked.

He loved her?

Haigar felt his heart tremor. Yes, he cared for Bailey, cared deeply for her. But did he care about her, in that way? Did he love Bailey platonically? Or was there something more to it then that? He could feel her arms draped on his shoulders and around his neck and she felt warm against his chest. He felt her fingers running through the fur on his shoulder. She was fascinated by their fur. He remembered with a smile, when she and Stranger had first arrived he and Bailey had become friends, before Loki had even been born…

Bailey had taken to wandering around the winter, underground homes of the Steef and Haigar took it upon himself to be her guide and friend when all others were hostile. When, after a few weeks of mistrust, it became too much and Bailey finally broke down and cried in one of the less used passages, Haigar had been there to wipe away her tears. He’d cuddled her close and whispered that he was her friend, that he would always be her friend.

Bailey pulled away from him slightly and looked at him with red, puffy eyes, she swallowed.

“You shouldn’t,” she swallowed again, “You shouldn’t be here, you can’t be seen, not with me, comforting me. They’ll shun you too.” Haigar brushed her tears away lightly with his thumb,

“Then let them. I will not give up on you. I will not leave you. Ever.” Bailey gazed at him with tear-glazed eyes. Haigar met her gaze and for a moment they just watched each other before Haigar wrapped an arm around Bailey’s shoulders and drew her to his chest, her head just under his chin.

They stayed like that for a couple of minutes before Bailey spoke again, mumbling into his throat.

“What’s that?” Haigar asked,

“I said, don’t tell Stranger I broke down…I…I just…I don’t want to upset ‘im, he thinks I’m settlin’ in…”

“I won’t, if you don’t want me to.”

“Thanks blue.”

“Blue?”

“Yer eyes are blue.” Bailey explained after a pause, Haigar chuckled,

“So I noticed, does that mean you call Stranger ‘green’?”

“Well, no…I mean, they’re aren’t many dark-haired, blue-eyed Steef around…and you’re…special.” Haigar broke into a warm smile,

“You think I’m special enough to have my own pet name?” Bailey giggled into his throat. Haigar couldn’t help notice how much it tickled…

“You would prefer I didn’t?” Haigar shook his head,

“No. No, I’d like a pet name.” Bailey laughed quietly again. She leaned her head on Haigar’s chest and ran her fingers through his fur. Haigar shivered.

“You like that?” Bailey teased,

“Makes my hair stand on end.” Haigar said, still smiling. Bailey buried her nose in the thick fur in the crook of Haigar’s neck, she mumbled something, “Come again?”

“I said, I love Steef fur, it’s so soft and warm…”

“You can touch it whenever you want then if you like it so much…” he murmured. Bailey chuckled again and Haigar joined in.

“Thank you, fer makin’ me feel better.”

“You’re welcome.”

Haigar savoured the feel of Bailey’s gentle fingers. If he ever did find a female, he’d have to get her to do this for him… There was a peaceful pause, Bailey stroked his fur and Haigar gently rubbed her back. Bailey broke the quiet after a moment;

“So, you wanna learn how to swim or not?” she asked playfully.

Dead Oddworld Just Got Stranger

My Hero
Deep in the forest, far away from prying eyes and ears; a splash sounded, followed by a yell and a shout of laughter.

The yell could easily be identified as the voice of a young Steef male, deep and rumbling. The laughter was higher, younger and obviously female and, though known only by a select few and one Steef tribe could tell, was also human.

Bailey shrieked with giggling laughter as the Haigar pushed his now sopping hair out of his face. She’d just splashed him.

“Bailey.” Haigar growled warningly,

“Yes?” the human replied, looking angelic,

“That doesn’t work on me.” Haigar said, still growling, Bailey giggled, but shrugged,

“Ah well, worth a try.” Bailey grinned at the irate Steef, “So, what’cha gonna do blue?” she asked teasingly. Haigar let another deep growl rumble in his chest. Bailey felt all the hairs on her arms rise and she suppressed a shiver of pleasure at that growl. She mentally shook herself. “What is wrong with me?” Of course she knew what was most likely causing the reaction, but she wasn’t quite ready to face that possibility just yet. “He’s my friend, my best friend, nothing more, no more, nor less…” the thought did not help, however may times she said it.

But through all her broiling thoughts, Bailey kept the teasing grin on her face as she floated easily, tauntingly moving away from Haigar.

“Catch me if you can.” She said in a sing-song voice and yelped when Haigar lunged for her. She dodged out of the way, laughing, and splashed him again, “Too slow Haigar!” she called. She swam towards the log that formed a bridge across the pool and heaved herself out, standing up and shaking herself dry and for a split-second looking remarkably like a Steef. She grinned at Haigar in the water and brushed wet, tangled hair from her face, eyes shining with a challenge. Haigar sighed and shook his head,

“Okay, you win Bay.” Bailey pouted,

“Ain’t you gonna at least put up a bit of a fight?” she asked hopefully, Haigar chuckled,

“Nope,” he looked at the sky, “And anyway, we should head home. You wouldn’t want to give the old timers more gossip material would’ja?” Bailey grinned and laughed,

“Hey, maybe we should, just to string ‘em along.” Haigar joined her laughter as he clambered out onto the bank, resting his palms on the ground and shook himself like a dog. He straightened and found Bailey by his elbow, looking up at the sun, estimating the time.

“Bay?” Haigar said her name slyly, Bailey looked down,

“What?”

“Got’cha.” Haigar chuckled, slapping the mud from his palms onto Bailey’s cheeks. Bailey shrieked.

“HAIGAR!” and the Steef laughed at her incensed look. He washed his hands in the pool while Bailey scrubbed her face with her sleeves. The Steef turned, about to proclaim himself the winner when Bailey suddenly tackled him. As been as he was in no way suspecting the attack, Haigar found himself bowled over into the grass by the pool. He ended up, sprawled on his back with Bailey lying on top of him, his arm around her waist.

At first their laughter rang out among the trees, laughter so hard they almost cried. But then the sounds of mirth faded away, and still Bailey lay on the Steef’s chest and stomach with his arm around her middle. Haigar caught Bailey’s gaze and held it for a moment. He felt himself blush and a warm rush in his stomach, his chest tightened and his heart began pounding, his breathing becoming short pants.

Bailey swallowed, uncomfortably aware of the soft fur of Haigar’s chest beneath her fingers, and the firm muscle it covered. And of the warm, strong arm that was draped over her lower back. Bailey realised with some trepidation – but also with a thrill – that all of this young, strong body rippled with hard muscle, capable of crushing bones. Bailey’s thoughts were abruptly brought to a halt when the Steef slowly raised trembling fingers and ran them softly down her cheek.

“Bailey…” Haigar said her name huskily, not entirely sure what he was going to say. But the breaking of the silence also broke the spell. Bailey blinked and shook herself, she grinned teasingly,

“You gonna let me up now or what?” The question jolted Haigar, and as if waking up from a dream, he too shook himself and blinked, he released her, a vaguely bemused expression on his face.

Bailey knelt beside him, hands clasping, still feeling embarrassed as Haigar propped himself up on one hand, the other touching his forehead, looking disorientated. He glanced at Bailey. She looked down and flushed. But then she looked up and grinned,

“Think you can outwit me do ya?” she asked in a low, playful growl and she tackled him again. “Belly rub!” she yelled as she quickly rolled him over and began rubbing his stomach, between his fore- and hindlegs. Haigar squirmed and let out a bark of laughter,

“Bay! Bay stop! That, that tickles!” Bailey hooted and kept tickling, moving her assault to his ribs as Haigar gasped and laughed. The awkwardness lifted much to Bailey’s relief and when she backed away, Haigar rolled onto his stomach and looked up, grinning. He stood and brushed himself down, helping Bailey up as well. “C’mon,” he said fondly, squeezing her hand. “We gotta head back.”

Bailey smiled and nodded.

As they were walking back, Bailey noticed a giant fallen tree by the track, she scrambled up onto it, ending up almost five feet from the ground.

“Whoa.” She breathed, then she laughed, “Hey lookit blue!” Haigar looked round, his smile fading a little as he watched Bailey, balancing, as she made her way across the log, almost skipping. Haigar felt a thrill of foreboding as she went along the trunk and out onto a considerably more slender off-shooting branch, still attached to the main trunk.

“Bay,” he called, “Be careful!” Bailey turned to reply in flippant answer when suddenly the branched cracked and let out a tortured groan. Bailey yelped and fell off. Once again, Haigar was right where he needed to be. He caught Bailey in his arms before she hit the hard-packed earth.

Bailey’s heart was pounding with adrenaline, her breathing erratic and shaky, the fall had shocked her system and she took deep breaths to calm herself down. It was only then that she noticed her palm was laid flat on Haigar’s chest and his arms were holding her protectively. She glanced up and felt a blush creep up her neck, but she kept eye-contact and smiled. Haigar returned it warmly with that special smile reserved just for Bailey, one that she thought would make any female melt and could break hearts.

“You should be more careful.” He murmured quietly, looking her over.

“I can look after myself.” Bailey retorted, but she sounded breathless. Haigar chuckled,

“So who was it that told me that they needed protecting now and again hrm?” Bailey laughed softly,

“I think you must have been hearing things.” She said playfully,

“Oh really?” Haigar growled, sending pleasant chills all along Bailey’s spine, Bailey giggled,

“Alright, alright, it was me!” she conceded, she slipped her arms around Haigar’s neck. “Looks like yer rescued me again.” She teased, “My hero.” Without warning Bailey leaned up and pressed her lips to Haigar’s cheek in an innocent kiss. When she drew away, Haigar’s wide eyes followed her as he stared. Bailey smiled and blushed as she looked away. “We should go home.” She whispered. Haigar smiled broadly and tilted his head, amused as Bailey avoided his gaze. Haigar lowered his face and touched his muzzle to Bailey’s cheek.

“Then we will.” he murmured.

Dead Oddworld Just Got Stranger

Tormenting And Teasing
Is it serious or not? Who knows?
A few days had passed since Bailey and Haigar had gone swimming together.

They had come back and found themselves more aware of the rumours flying around and the whispers that followed them seemingly everywhere. As soon as they had returned to the village, it seemed, and they had been seen, damp and laughing together. The gossip in the tribe escalated a hundred-fold.

It was the desire to stir things up abit then that prompted Bailey to choose that moment to slip her hand into Haigar’s. Haigar, at first surprised, found her devilish sense of humour extremely amusing, and knowing what the human had in mind, interlaced his fingers with hers. By silent, mutual consent, starting the game.

When they were alone, they would quietly giggle together like naughty schoolchildren as they recalled the looks on peoples’ faces. And though Haigar laughed at the gullibility of the other Steef, he couldn’t ignore the wrench on his heart when he thought that his shows of affection were all considered part of the farce to string the gossips along.

He still however, willingly and dutifully played his role in the game, holding her hand, kissing her cheek whenever anyone was watching them, and, of course, the pet names they come up with, with much laughing on their part. Haigar would always remember the look on Stranger’s face when he’d first heard them.

It had been late afternoon. Bailey’s family; Stranger, Daimen, Alika, Loki and now Chiron too as well as herself, had been sitting around the cooking fire, Alika and Loki serving the afternoon meal. Haigar had gone off the collect wood to keep the fire going. When he returned he placed the branches he’d collected carefully next to the fire and then sat down beside Bailey.

“Hey beautiful.” He’d said, softly, but loud enough for everyone to hear,

“Hey stud.” Bailey replied blithely, Haigar kissed her cheek. Reactions had been instantaneous and varied.

There was a sound of surprise from Chiron as he abruptly sat down, almost on top of Loki. Daimen had looked up sharply and blinked, eyes wide, flicking between his son and ‘niece’, then cleared his throat and made out as if nothing unusual had occurred. Alika made no move or sound, but offered Bailey her food, smiling widely and warmly and Loki grinned at her brother and nudged him with her elbow. But maybe the most fantastic reaction was from Stranger. His eyes all but bulged and he choked on his dinner, collapsing into a coughing fit before shouting hoarsely,

“WHAT!?”

His expression of shock-horror was priceless as he glared at Haigar, eyes narrowed and then he’d turned his gaze to Bailey who blinked innocently at him. “We have ter talk.” Stranger had said firmly.

Bailey nodded. When Stranger said something with that tone, you didn’t argue, you just hopped too and obeyed. She rose quietly, glancing once at Haigar, who had gone rather pale and allowed Stranger to herd her into their hut.

Bailey sat on her beanbag while Stranger paced the hut, he, looking at her and groaning occasionally. Finally he came and knelt before her, hands on her shoulders.

“Bailey.” He moaned in a kind of horror, but he didn’t finish, just stared at her, some unreadable expression in his eyes. Bailey decided now was the time to explain.

“It’s not what you think.” She said, almost pleadingly. Stranger watched her for a moment, chewing his lip, then he let out a breath,

“What do I think it is then kid?” he asked,

“Exactly what it looks like…” Bailey ventured. Stranger groaned again and dragged a hand down his face,

“Oh my Odd.” he moaned, he held Bailey’s face in huge, hairy hands. “Please tell me you haven’t.” he said, practically begging. Bailey drew her eyebrows together,

“I think we’re havin’ different conversations here.” she said, “Coz I ain’t got a clue what yer talkin’ about.” There was a pause, “Look, Stranger, it’s not real, none of it is, it’s all fake.” Bailey said, Stranger frowned in confusion.

“Huh?”

“Me an’ Haigar found out that the tribe’s bin gossipin’ ‘bout us, sayin’ we’re…well…together…” Stranger’s expression was pained, Bailey frowned, “D’you…have a problem with that?” she asked, somewhat hurt. Stranger didn’t say anything for a moment, just looked into her eyes thoughtfully.

“What have yer done?” he finally asked in a small whisper. Bailey made a sound of exasperation and curled her fingers into the thick fur between Stranger’s neck and shoulder.

“Stranger, I haven’t done a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g.” she said slowly and clearly.

“Why didn’t yer tell me?” Stranger asked, still in that broken voice, Bailey sighed,

“Tell you what Stranger?” she asked tiredly, “That me an’ Haigar are sick of people assumin’ stuff about us because we’re close friends? That we’ decided to just put up a farce ter string the gossips on? That it’s just all one big game to amuse ourselves? Or d’you mean yer why didn’t I tell you that me an’ Haigar are together? Which we’re not.” She added,

“Yer ain’t?” Stranger repeated,

“No Stranger,” Bailey grinned, “We ain’t.”

“Yer mean…he hasn’t…touched yer…” Bailey’s eyes bugged,

“Stranger!” she burst out, completely shocked, “This is Haigar we’re talkin’ about, of course he hasn’t!” Bailey gazed at the Steef, a hurt expression on her face, “You don’t think much of me, do ya?” she asked, looking upset. Stranger looked horrified,

“What!? Oh no, baby, no.” he gathered the human into his arms, “I jist, I jist can’t bear the thought that yer ain’t tellin’ me stuff…” he whispered, “That we ain’t talkin’ anymore…I…” he swallowed, “I’m scared we ain’t as close as we used ter be…yer growin’ up, even if yer body ain’t…and I don’t want ter lose yer kid…” Bailey looked at him in surprise, then flung her arms around Stranger’s neck.

“You ain’t gonna lose me Dad.” She murmured, she felt suddenly guilty, she hadn’t been spending as much time with Stranger as she used too, not as much as she should have been. She hugged him tightly, burying her face into his fur. “I’m sorry,” she whispered, “I haven’t been thinkin’ of what I shoulda bin… Stranger?” she pulled away and looked at him. Stranger met her gaze, “Can we…do more stuff together, I mean, like we used too…” Stranger smiled and drew her closer to him.

“Yeh, yeh we can.” He answered, “I love you liddle darlin’.”

“I love you too.” Bailey said softly, she cuddled closer to him. There was a comfortable silence as Stranger held the human to his chest, resting his chin on her hair. “Stranger?”

“Yes?”

“Would…would it be so bad…if I did fall fer a Steef?” Stranger went thoughtfully quiet.

“No…” he said at last, “It wouldn’t…I jist, don’t want yer ter get hurt liddle one, yer still young, you got a lot of growin’, in yer mind, ter do…”

“But, we age so differently Stranger…” Bailey faded off. “Is it just because it’s Haigar?” she asked suddenly, “Because we’re cousins?” Stranger tensed slightly but then sighed,

“No…it’s not that either… Haigar…he’s a good kid, I know he’d look after yer, he’d love yer as much as I do, and I know yer ‘cousins’, but not by blood, only coz yer my kid… So no, it’s not that. It’s…” Stranger let out a frustrated breath through his nose, this was new for him and just a bit difficult for him to handle. It was a rather delicate subject after all. “I think it’s just coz yer my kid, I, I jist feel protective of yer, I don’t want yer ter get hurt…fer someone ter, ter use yer…” there was a pause. “See, when a male and female-” Bailey began shaking with laughter. Stranger blinked and looked down at her in surprise.

“Yer don’t havta go into that Stranger,” she giggled. “Me Ma didn’t leave me alone in the world completely unprepared…” Stranger pulled his head back so he could see her better, Bailey chuckled as she saw him flush and as he cleared his throat embarrassedly, “Hey, I could have just let you plough on.” Bailey said when she saw his embarrassment.

“Yeh…well…” Bailey hugged him tightly, it felt good to know that somebody loved her enough to try and explain the facts of life when it was so awkward.

“I love you Stranger.” Stranger made a gruff sound in his throat,

“Yeh…I love yer too.”

When, a little while later, Stranger and Bailey went outside again, they were met by four curious faces and one very worried one. Stranger sat down and Bailey took her seat between him and Haigar.

“Er…Uncle Stranger…?” Haigar ventured, Stranger grunted gruffly.

“I don’t like it…” he growled, Bailey hid a grin as Stranger played along, true, Stranger didn’t agree with the whole farce idea. But he did see what Bailey meant when she said that she and Haigar weren’t really doing anything other then playing off rumours and assumptions. Haigar looked like he was going to throw-up as Stranger pinned him with a glowing, neon green-eyed stare, but Bailey also noticed the dark Steef looked determined and defiant. “But whether I likes it or not…” Stranger smiled ruefully, “I ain’t gonna stop yer.” He pointed a finger at Haigar, “You jist look after ‘er, yer hear?” Haigar nodded, looking relieved,

“Yes Uncle Stranger.” He said vehemently, he looked fondly at Bailey, “I will.” He said firmly, “I would never hurt her…”

Bailey tilted her head but successfully masked her expression with a soft smile, careful to keep the surprise and curiosity from it as she met Haigar’s look and saw something she had never seen nor understood in his warm blue eyes.

Stranger glanced from the dark Steef to the human and back again. He hid a grin of his own at Bailey’s innocence and naivety. Though Haigar kept up the act of affection under the guise of pretence, Stranger saw the real emotion in his nephew’s eyes. Whether Bailey knew or not, what Haigar felt was real, and though he showed it for a farce, he really felt it.

Haigar loved Bailey.

Oddworld Just Got Stranger

FLUFFY! Oh oh, and the next chapter is veeeeeeeery interestin’, if I do say so meself, bit of a plot development so watch out. Oh, and if you don’t like fluff, well then yer’ll prolly hate it.

Old Leather
Bailey didn’t realise how much she’d missed Stranger until that night. When he’d tucked her in, Bailey had asked once again about doing something together. Stranger had looked delightedly and had smiled broadly.

“Tomorrow?” he ventured, his eyes looked hopeful and glowed when Bailey nodded enthusiastically. “Then you better sleep,” he kissed her forehead, “G’night kid.”

“Night S-S-Stranger.” Bailey answered through a wide yawn. She snuggled down in the blankets and fell asleep with a smile on her face, looking forward to the next day.

The day dawned bright and clear, the warmth of mid-summer showing itself as soon as the sun rose. Unusually Bailey woke up early, stretching and yawning she ruffled her hair and got out of bed.

“Wonder where Stranger is?” was her first thought and for a moment she felt her stomach drop, had he forgotten about their plans? He normally woke her up earlier… Bailey peeped out of the window, early morning sunshine streaming in. It came to her that she could be the first one up. Bailey grinned.

Creeping out of her own room she quietly crossed the living room of the hut and peered into Stranger’s bedroom. Stranger was sprawled out on his rough, hay-stuffed mattress, his mouth open as he snored. Bailey giggled. Though she had a proper bed (or as ‘proper’ as she could have) with blankets and sheets and soft mattress, Stranger preferred to have his own lumpy mattress and roughly woven blanket that tickled and scratched.

Softly, Bailey crept over to the bed, her first thoughts were to yell and jump onto the bed and consequentially Stranger, but seeing him lying there, so peaceful, changed her mind. Instead she crawled onto the mattress and wiggled under the blanket. She picked up Stranger’s arm and moved it so that it was over her and she snuggled into his chest.

She’d missed this, Bailey realised, she’d missed Stranger just cuddling her. When they’d been in the wilds, before they found the other Steef, Bailey had always slept wrapped in Stranger’s arms. It was a comforting feeling to be there again. Just then, Stranger stirred, blinking and looking down at the little human in his arms. Bailey smiled shyly at him, Stranger rumbled a purr in return and wrapped his arms more tightly around her. Bailey rested her head on his chest as Stranger gently stroked her hair. They stayed like that until the birds started singing and the light of the sun became stronger.

“Alrigh’ squirt.” Stranger murmured, “Whadda ya wanna do?” Bailey buried her nose into the fur on his chest.

”I don’t care.” Came her muffled voice, “I just wanna spend the day with you.” Stranger smiled and hugged her again,

“Where d’you an’ Haigar go?” he asked all of a sudden, Bailey was unfazed and shrugged,

“We just…go. We don’t really plan on where…although yesterday was different, Haigar showed me this place in the forest with a pool.”

“Ah, so tha’s why yer were all wet.” Bailey giggled,

“Yeh, I taught him how to swim.” Stranger chuckled as he thought of Haigar floundering around, legs going everywhere.

“Bet tha’ was fun.” He commented lightly, Bailey nodded in affirmative.

“Yeh…” she murmured thoughtfully, “Yeh, it was.” Stranger brushed hair from Bailey’s face and tilted her chin so that she was looking at him.

“He really cares for yer, yer know.” Bailey smiled,

“I know.”

“He was jist as worried as me, when yer fought Karnan…”

“He didn’t say.” Bailey frowned,

“Coz he believed in yer, he knew yer could beat ‘im…even if I didn’t.” he added softly. Bailey looked at Stranger again, looked right into his fantastic, neon green eyes. Stranger sighed slightly and stroked her cheek with one gentle claw. “I shoulda believed it yer…even more then Haigar, I’ve seen what’cha can do.”

“It just shows you care,” Bailey said quietly, “Shows you care enough to not even want me to take risks. Mam never cared that much…” Stranger nuzzled the top of Bailey’s head and kissed her hair.

“I love you, so much Bailey…” he said without warning. Bailey smiled and let her eyes close as she laid her head over Stranger’s heart. Soon they would move, but right now there was time to just be together. Their time.

¤§¤

Bailey grinned to herself and hid behind the thick trunk of a huge tree. Though it was somewhat of a childish game, Bailey relished being able to muck about with Stranger.

She peeped around the tree and giggled delightedly when she couldn’t see him, it looked like she’d lost him and won the game. Until two Steef arms wrapped around her stomach and she felt a warmth on her back. She heard Stranger chuckle next to her ear as he blew on it.

“Got’cha.” He said and chuckled again, Bailey swatted at him and rubbed her ear as she laughed with him.

“Yer know I hate it when yer do that.” Bailey muttered, still rubbing her ear. Stranger’s laughter rumbled in his chest,

“Why d’yer thinks I does it?” he asked. Bailey swatted at him again, but she was smiling as Stranger plucked his hat from her hair and replaced it on his own head. Bailey’s smile grew wider, even if wearing it made him look ridiculous with his re-grown horns, Stranger had taken back to wearing his old fedora hat. Though he never had explained why he’d started wearing it again, Bailey thought she knew.

When they had first arrived at the valley and Stranger and Bailey’s hut had been built, Bailey had been helping him unpack when she’d found his hat. At first she’d put it away under her own bed with the rest of her things, in the wicker baskets the Steef kept their belongings in when they were in the summer valley. But every so often Bailey would drag it out and just sit on her bed, holding it. She didn’t know why but it caused a lump to rise in her throat, she tightened her grip on the old, worn leather and she’d jumped when Stranger’s voice had said her name.

Stranger heard Bailey go quiet and had gone to see what had distracted her. He had found his small human sitting on her bed, looking down at what she held in her hands. It was his hat. The one Stranger hadn’t seen he’d left the winter homes. He frowned confusedly, how had it gotten here? He hadn’t packed it. He’d packed his poncho but, subconsciously knowing that his horns would be re-growing soon, he hadn’t bothered to pack his hat. At first he’d dismissed the thought as unimportant, but then, more and more frequently he’d found Bailey, with his hat, looking somewhat sad.

This time he studied Bailey intently for a moment and realised with surprise that Bailey was chewing her lip and looked like she was abut to cry. Slowly Stranger went to her.

“Bailey?” he laid a hand on her shoulder and Bailey jumped, looking up at him, “Kid? Are you okay?” Stranger asked, his voice troubled. Bailey bit down on her bottom lip and nodded. Stranger sighed, “Yer don’t look it…” he said after a pause. Bailey didn’t meet his gaze.

In her mind’s eyes she could see a burning room, Outlaws screaming as they were engulfed in flames, and Stranger… Stranger, unmasked as a Steef, his disguise gone. So different… To Bailey’s horror she felt a burning prickling behind her eyes as tears threatened. She blinked them back but they gathered anyway.

“Kid?” Bailey looked up, watching Stranger’s luminous green eyes widen slightly as he saw the moisture glazing her own hazel ones. “Oh kid,” Stranger folded his Steef legs and put his arms around the human, drawing her in towards him. “Wotsmatter kid?” he asked softly. Bailey hesitated, then wrapped her arms around the Steef’s neck, still holding his hat. Stranger felt the first stirrings of alarm when he felt Bailey shaking against him. “Liddle darlin’ please,” he pleaded, “Whadda ya upset about?” Bailey buried her face in the thick fur on his neck.

“Why does everything change?” she’d asked in a whisper, “Why can’t it stay the same?” Stranger didn’t know exactly what Bailey was talking about. However the next words she spoke made it all clear. “I don’t want everything to change.” She whimpered, “I don’t want to lose everything I know, everything that’s familiar and makes me feel safe.” Stranger tightened his hold on Bailey when he felt a hot wetness begin on his shoulder, “I don’t want you to leave.” Bailey said wretchedly. In shock Stranger drew away and looked into Bailey’s face,

“Bailey…yer think I’m gonna go away?” he wiped the tears on her cheeks away with his thumb, “Yer think I’d leave yer liddle darlin’?”

“Everything else I know, everything- it’s, it’s all changing, and, and I’ scared-”

“That I’m gonna change too? That’ll I’ll go away?” Bailey looked at the floor and nodded. Stranger watched her for a moment, heart tugging. Gently he took his hat from Bailey’s hands, Bailey looked up and watched him put it on his own head. He grinned down at Bailey, he stroked her cheek with his thumb, “Kid, I ain’t ever gonna change.” He suddenly wrapped his arms around her and picked her up like she was a small child, kissing her cheek. “An’ I would never, ever leave ma baby.” Bailey smiled weakly, Stranger placed one large hand on her head and pressed it to his shoulder. Bailey sighed in relief and snuggled up to him.

He’d worn that hat ever since.

Stranger buried his muzzle in Baileys hair and chuckled. He hugged her tightly. “Love yer Bailey.” He murmured, he squeezed Bailey gently and then set her on her feet. Bailey turned to face him, wrapping her arms around Stranger’s stomach and rubbing her nose into the soft fur on his chest.

“Love you too.” She mumbled. Stranger stroked her hair, smiling contentedly to himself. Bailey drew away with a questioning look on her face. “Stranger?” he looked down at her.

“Yeh?” Bailey grinned, looking, Stranger realised, very like himself. Suddenly she snatched his hat and wriggled out his arm, breaking into a run.

“Can’t catch me!” she called, Stranger growled and grinned a feral grin.

“We’ll see ‘bout tha’…” he muttered and took off after his Bailey.
