Oddworld What made us like Oddworld?

(Sory if there's already a thread about this)
I think this is a queston for all fans. What made us all like Oddworld and be a fan? Was it the gameplay, the storyline, the characters? Or something more?
I think every true fan should post a short paragraph about "how it started". How you started liking oddworld and buying their games and merchendise.

I'll share my own story:

When I was about 7, I bought a demo disc with a lot of demos. One of them was Abe's Exoddus. I liked the game and the characters, so I decided to buy the game. Later, I started understanding the storyline, and found out that Abe's Oddysee existed. I really loved the game and decided to buy Abe's Oddysee off the internet (I couldn't find it in stores), but I had to wait a couple of years 'till i bought it (didn't have a credit card). After being intrtigued by Abe's Oddysee, I bought an XBOX just so I could play Munch's Oddysee. And I guess that's it.

I started to like it in Middle School, when I saw concept art from MO. I forgot about it and picked it up a few years later, which was when I became totally devoted.

The first game I got for playstation was Abraham's Odysee. The only reason I still have my playstation is Abraham's Odysee. I suppose it was just programmed in from day one.

It started in the 4th grade when a friend kept talking about an awesome game. It had a frog dude in a wheelchair tiny fury things that could kill people and you could save anywhere. Once he told me the name I looked it up found out it was a series. So I then saved up for my xbox and it was my first game. I then got Sranger's Wrath, but to this day I still cant find the abe games!

Dead when i became a fan....

It started for me in the summer of 1997 when there was a demo disc (playstation underground?) with Abe's Oddysee on it. I had been following the game since its announcement and was growing strong interest up until then with the character design that i saw in magazine advertisements. When the game finally launched on September 17, 1997, i picked up my reserved copy and holed up in my room until i finished it. I was obsessed from then on. Eventually getting tons of oddworld swag, a statue, retail displays, the art book, anything that had anything to do with oddworld. Including 3 oddworld tattoos.

for nearly 9 years now, oddworld has been a large part of my life. And not because it is a video game. If oddworld were never a game, but rather a series of illustrated books, or an animated tv series, or anything i would still be just as in love with it.

might as well write a poem

An Ode to Oddworld
O is for Odd, Odder, and Oddest, which the name clearly states
D is for the Dimwitted heros and the quests they partake
the other D is for Delightfully tacky and fun
W for Wildlife which keeps you on the run
O for the Only great game here for miles
R is for the Really wide smiles
L is Love it, for I truly do
D is for dump my frog legs in it too

It was back at christmas time in 1997. I had a playstation and with it I had a racing game and Abes Oddysee. I didn't play on the Abe game for about two months, but then after it took me ages to get past the stockyard, I fell in love with the Monsaic Lines and every other level after that. Then one day I came accross Abes Exoddus, bought it and loved that more than the first game.

Happy

Oh, Thank You for creating this topic, it will be fun!

Well, my story is well......Odd. It was a neat experience for me.
Anyways, when I was about 6, I had a GameBoy Color with 3 games, one being Oddworld Adventures 2. I loved it way more than my other two games, so I played it all the time and beat it many times. It was kind of hard for me, considering I was very young and just learned how to read about a year ago, so I could not read the long words in the game (I had to ask my Mom to spell words for me like: Mudokons).
So after a year or so, I had come across Abe's Exoddus and I noticed that it was the same guy on the cover of my game for my GameBoy Color (Abe, of course) and that there were other creatures on the cover that appeared in my game (The Glukkons). I asked my Mom if I could get it and she said that I needed a Playstation. I was so bumed because I loved Oddworld Adventures 2 so much and I wanted Abe's Exoddus so bad. I then asked if I could get a Playstation so I could get the game and she replied: "I don't know, maybe". Which we all know means NO.
A few months later we were on our way to Bali, Indonesia (I live there on and off). When we had been there for a few weeks, we went to go eat at a Cafe'. I was about to bring in my GameBoy and Oddworld Adventures 2, but Mom said to leave it in the car. I left it in the car and we went to eat. When we came back, someone had broken in to the car and stolen Mom's digital camera, a bunch of CDs and.......... my prized possesion, Oddworld Adventures 2 (with the GameBoy)! We both felt so crummy, she had lost some of her stuff, just as I had.
Unfortunatley, this was the end of Oddworld for a few years for me.
When we had returned off and on from Bali, Indonesia to Sedona, Arizona a few times, I was now about 9 or 10. It was about Christmas time and Mom remembered how much I loved Oddworld Adventures 2, so for my BIG gift, I had received and Xbox with, my now favorite game of all time, Oddworld Munch's Oddysee!!! At first I was stunned that my favorite chatacter was on the cover with another really cool looking creature. I had no idea that there was more games then Abe's Exoddus and Oddworld Adventures 2. I was so surprized. I stayed up all night playing it and I got to: "The Mudokon Fortress". The next morning I went upstairs for some breakfast and to say "Good Morning" to Mom. After being up for a while I went back downstairs to play Munch's Oddysee, and on those two days, I had become very connected to Munch, but not as much as I had Abe. I loved the two of them very much, and soon I had beat the game with Perfect Quarma.
After Munch's Oddysee, I had become addicted to Oddworld more then ever before, and when it came out, I purchased Oddworld Stranger's Wrath. A very good game, but I must say, that after I beat it, it didn't come close to Abe & Munch.
Now I have all the Oddworld games, including: the ones on GameBoy, Playstation and Xbox. I have beat each one of them many times, and I enjoy every one of them SO much.
I have become addicted to Oddworld and try to get the very most of it as possible.

I wish i had Oddworld when i was 6. I imagine it seeming much more magical at that age. Although, Abe's Oddysee DID come out during my high school period of pot smoking so it was still pretty magical for me......

Tsk, you younguns. I remember being the youngest members on the Oddworld Forums. So many memories.

Rather than explain an umpteenth time how I first encountered Oddworld, I'll try to figure out what first drew me to it, because I certainly wasn't familiar with it at all. I suppose it was the complete oddness of it, which is surprising because that's not actually the dominant style of Oddworld nowadays. The completely fresh music, the weird animal noises, Abe's bizarre voice all made it really what I consider Oddworld to be. I guess I loved the gameplay, too.

Well well my story....

First off all I want to thank my dear brother in getting AO. On our first year living in florida we got a playstation with some of those games. Among those games was AO. My brother saw it on a commercial and thought it would be a good idea to try it out. So we were home plug in the PS played spyro and crash before AO (I recommend those two games by the way) and then we got to Abe's Oddysee..... So we put it in and stuff saw the companies that helped make it then....We saw him.....We were horribly impressed with the game so far just by seeing abe's face and we got more addicted. Sadly AO did not make me start my oddworld addiction. It was Abe's Exoddus that put the peanut butter and jelly together. Wow did I learn so much about oddworld after that.

So there is my story. And a reason why love my bro so much.

Happy My story

Well, my cousin had Abe's Exoddus and he showed it to me and my sis, we liked it kind of. (My sis hates Oddworld now). We had a few days with Oddworld in the summer and we played on it a lot but couldn't get past the mines level. I was about 6 here. All I remember is that my cousin stopped showin it us. Then when I was about 8 I think my sister's friend gave me Abe's Oddysee. I liked it but could never get past Rupture farms. I got bored of it after a while. When me and my dad went to the video shop want time I saw Abe's Exoddus and I was absolutely excited, I rented it for a week and played it all that night and cheated to get to the mudomo I think it is vaults. I played it the next next day and I went off it (Don't ask me why) I had to take it back and I was really gutted. Then I asked my dad to buy it me for 7 pounds, he got it me. I took it round to my cousin's house a lot and we played it some times. I cheated to finish the game, I wish I didn't. Then I completely went off Oddworld 'till I was about 10, then I played the Abe's Exoddus a lot. But I thought Abe's Oddysee was extremely hard so I didn't play that much. When I turned 11 I tryed to play Abe's Exoddus all the way through with invincibility but it froze on the last level of mines, so I cheated to get to Necrum then I got up to Bonewerkz. I stopped playing it for a bit, then I thought I don't really wanna cheat anymore on Oddworld so I deleted my save and stopped playing it. Now (I am still 11 nearly 12) I play Abe's Oddysee(It froze in Scrabania and everywhere, so I am saving up for another Abe's Oddysee. I am in Bonewerkz on my new Abe's Exoddus(without killing mudokons or having cheats). I finished MO, and I am playing Stranger's Wrath. For some reason I am mad on Oddworld now, CRAZY about Oddworld, I have dreams that I am in Oddworld, I have Oddworld Icons and Screensavers. I am happy I am ODD. Phew that took ages sorry guys

It can have its downsides too.

I first saw AO when I was around 7 or so (I really can't remember). My mothr and i would go into Circuit City from time to time (back in the happy days). And I would always go aroudn the game section, I found Abe's Oddysee on the shelf and immediately fell inlove with the scrabs, paramites and all the other characters on the box. I kept nagging and nagging my mother to buy it for me for some period of time, and she finally did. The opnly problem was when I played it for the first time, I got the shit scared out of me and I turned it off after about an hour of gameplay. I tried several times to get past the first nonsecret electric gate on the first level (I even went through lengths to get the start guide to help me), but alas, I could never surpass. I eventually learned that I needed to posess the slig sleeping, only problem was I always killed it somehow.

About six years later I played MO at a party and loved it, I got re-addicted to the oddowlrd universe and would go on oddworld dot com almost everyday. Then, when I was rummeging through my immanse pile of pc games, I stumbled upon old Abe's Oddysee and decided to download it on my computer (the original comp which I used had long been thrown out). After about two days of gametime and working witht he start guide, I got passed the first level with saving most of the muds and visiting the secret areas. Now I am stuck on the scrabanian temple.

In the early summer of 2005 I sought to bring a copy of AE into my hands. I searched with gusto on numerous online sources for a copy and then I found one on Amazon. I ordered it, and a few days later it came to the post office. And about four weeks and 200 cans of cola later, I finished the game.

Then I found this place.

Here's my story;

Well, I first got Oddworld in like...1999 when I still lived in England. I got my first Gameboy color for my birthday, along with the game; Oddworld Adventures.
I thought; Huh, must be a cool game. And it was.
So, after two years, during christmas, me and my brother got our first xbox, and a lot of games I can't remember.
But I got Munch's Oddysee.
I first played it, and it was so addictive. Sometimes, I wish I could lose my memory of playing the game, and restart it all over again without knowing.
Then I became intersted with Oddworld deeply.
I continued to play Munch's Oddysee over and over...finding new things that I've never seen nor done.
Then whenI heard about Stranger's Wrath on the forums, I was really excited. To get to play the next Oddworld game.
And there you have it.
I had a Playstation, but I never did get Abe's Oddysee or Exodus, and I never had the time to get it 'fore it blew up...

I assume it was somewhere around 1997, maybe 1998... and I was watching TV with my brother and father one day when a commercial for AO came on. For some reason, my dad [who generally dislikes modern video games because they 'make him dizzy'] was amazed by the commercial [as were my brother and I], and him talking about how cool it was just left the name of the game etched into my mind. A few days later, we were at Target, and I saw the game there, so I bought it [I don't think my dad remembered seeing the commercial, because he just sorta looked at the cover and went 'ehh']. Started playing it with my little brother, and it's been my favorite game ever since.

wow so many long stories!

well , i first saw oddworld when i met kevin , he bought a PS1 and got OAO with it.
When we decided to play it together , the very first minutes of the game i already loved it.
even the story in the beginning was a mixture of a thing that you MUST see ending,
so we played and played , day after day
and finaly completed it (dozens of mudokons wasted or something )
then when OAE was released we could only get the french version (english was nowhere to be found )
so we bought that and played it
next day we went to the shopping centre and we saw OAE english so bought that and again played and played and loved it the whole time
With munch oddysee it was difrent bechause i didnt had an xbox, but i suddenly managed to get an xbox about a month before the OMO release.
when OSW was released i got OSW but missed abe and munch but loved stranger..

my story

I became a fan roughly a year before I actually played the game. I read about it in a magazine, and it sounded downright weird. I liked weird, so I looked up the official website and litterally devoured all the information, absorbing it. It was a comprehensive universe, detailed and bizarre, and I loved it. It was about a year later that, after downloading and playing the two computer demos, I finally bought the games.

The rest is history.

I remember it like it was yesterday...
I got a PlayStation for my birthday (I was 6 or 7) and it came with a free demo disc. On the disc was AO. I played it (don't know why, maybe it was fate) and fell in love with the weirdeness. I think it kind of freaked me out first 'cause I was so young but that didn't stop me from playing it though. The first time I played the slig told me to freeze and I did. I got blown away. That's when I lost my innocence.

what i think it is, is that people have a natural instinct to like odd and new things. Well oddworld aint no exception, just about every thing in the game is something new and weird, so naturaly people like to play it and learn more about oddworld. This is just a prediction so dont think im some now-it-all. But when i got hooked was when i watched my mother play the game, i thought it was cool so i got into it and now im an oddworld fan.

well, when i was in year 5 and 6, i saw these adds of munche's oddesy on the side of the bus. then one day, i was in the mall, and was trying to find a game i would like at the old games section of a store, i found abe's oddesy, and i recognised abe from the munche's oddessy poster, altough i didn't know that at the time. i wasn't sure if i'd like the game, but i bought it anyway. i read through the manual, and it sounded great! altough my mum made me wait a whole week to play the game. first, i played it with an old comp with no sound, and i loved the game. but later, i played it on my parent's lap top, (with sound), and i loved it, expecially the movies.
later, i tried to find abe's exodus, but couldn't find it in the store, and i still don't have the game.
but i'm still a huge fan of oddworld.

I can't really place down why I loved Abe's Oddysee, but it just drew me in right from the beginning.
Probably similarly to Max, it was the oddness in the sound and imagery. Maybe because it was just different, with the awesome Main Menu and Abe speaking to you.
