Tiny Suggestion for "What do you look like?" Threads.

Since the appropriate time to create a new "What do you look like?" thread and do away with the old one seems a little hazy, perhaps we should set up some standards for it? From what I recall about the old ones, most of them are closed in the 20's. I think when the thread reaches page 25, no more pictures should be posted, but comments can continue so everyone gets in what they would like to say. When the commenting dies away, then a Moderator should close it and make a new version.

Sound good... or stupid?

I only think they should close them if they are just rambling on about some nonsense, like the thread games idiots make. And reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally old threads that are on life support.

I dunno... personally I think that all the previous "What do you look like?" threads should be locked so that posting can be focused on the new thread. If you want to comment on something in the last thread, do so in the new one... I can't see anything wrong with that.

Keeping them open will just mean that they will be dragged back up from the depths all the time.

I'd agree on a 20 page limit. 25 seems to be a bit much for some reason... maybe it's just me being odd. But a 20 or so limit seems like a wise idea. Maybe as just a benchmark for when a thread gets a little bit too long.

No, no. You misunderstood... or I didn't make it clear enough. Probably the latter.

I meant let all the commenting die down before closing it and opening a new one. When there are no more comments, then a new thread should be opened. If the thread was closed before the commenting stopped, comments about old pictures would lead people to have to find what someone is commenting on in another thread, which sounds annoying to me.

So:
1)"What do you look like? (vX)" reaches page 25.
2)No one posts anymore pictures, but people can continue commenting on recent pictures.
3)Commenting eventually dies away.
4)Mod closes and opens new version.

That's what I meant; however, as I typed that, I realized there'd be no way of stopping people who aren't familiar with the system from posting more pictures. But I think the 20-something page limit is still good and takes away from the confusion of when to make a new one.

Ok. I have another proposal.

We replace the uber spamilicious What are you listening to threads with general music talk, in which you can post what you're listening to, but as long as it's supported by a bulk of text of a non spam variaty.

Ok, i copied it from another thread but someone might read it here.

The problem with this is because of the different settings of 'posts per page', everyone has a different 'page 25'.

Also, I thought in previous times new ones were only started because the other ones stopped being posted in.
I don't see why you need to make a new one, isn't it better to have everything in the one thread?

Yes, good point. And I think that on that basis it would probably be more sensible to make a new thread whenever the old one gets rediculously large (roughly 25 pages on the default page view setting).

Also Ambi I'm a little confused... why does a moderator have to open the new one? I think you're over-ceremonialising the whole what do you look like thread idea... it doesn't need to be some kind of official event, and we don't need moderators to do it, the members are perfectly capable of creating a new thread.

Personally I think this whole thing is one big nonissue. The moderators aren't so without work that we need to give them the role of honorary "what do you look like?" thread opener. What's more we've never really had a problem in the past. I really don't see why comments about photos from the previous what do you look like threads can't be brought forward to the recent one. And I don't see what is so bad about just doing away with the old one when it becomes a bit too big in the opinion of whoever happens to be thinking about making a fresh one at the time. I've seen one "what do you look like?" thread that was just 2 pages long, and a few others that ended after much less than 25 pages. So I think it should be up to us, the forumers, to decide when they get too long, as we always have done in the past.

If we make this place too "official", too mod driven, then the standard users won't feel like they're a real part of building this community. Everyone should have room to contribute in a productive way, not just the mods, and I believe that deciding when is best to open a new "what do you look like?" thread is just one of those things.

So lets just leave it how it is... please? There's really no need to change it.

Lets just add one little rule of thumb though; if one person suggests that a new thread be made, and a second, and preferably third person agrees, then a new thread should be created, and not before. That way we won't have people creating new ones willy nilly like conker_rocket and snoozer did.

Mmhmm... yeah, this thread was made on impulse. I wasn't thinking or feeling very well last night. Shall we close it and pretend it never happened?

Well I don't think we need to go that far...

You brought up some good points, and an idea is always worth bringing up, whether it turns out to be good or not. To begin with people thought my idea about the new forum was a bad one but then it happened, so you never know!

Plus, Hobo is trying to make a point, one which I strongly agree with and think is a good idea, but nobody seems to be paying any attention to him. So I say we keep this one open to give people a chance to discuss his ideas too...
